Asia Cup uncertainty may hit Pakistan Cricket Board's revenue hard
With the future of this year's Asia Cup T20 tournament mired in uncertainty, the Pakistan Cricket Board is bracing for a severe hit to its revenue. The Pakistan Cricket Board is expecting to earn an estimated 8.8 billion rupees this year from its share of the revenue from the International Cricket Council (ICC) and the Asian Cricket Council (ACC). According to details coming from a reliable Board source, the PCB has outlined an amount of USD 25.9 million (approximately 7.7 billion rupees) during this fiscal year as its share from the ICC. The Board is hoping to earn another 1.16 billion rupees from the Asia Cup and 7.77 million rupees through other international cricket events. "The revenues from these two major sources (ICC and Asia Cup) is very important for the financial health of Pakistan cricket," one well-informed insider said. He said the uncertainty over the schedule and venue for the Asia Cup has increased as PCB Chairman Mohsin Naqvi did not travel to Singapore for the ICC meetings last weekend. Naqvi, who is also the federal interior minister, instead took part in the AGM virtually. According to the insider, PCB CEO Sumair Ahmed, who had gone for the ICC meeting, "didn't get positive responses" from either the BCCI or the boards of Sri Lanka, and Afghanistan over attending the ACC meeting called on July 24 in Dhaka to finalise the Asia Cup arrangements. "The PCB met with plenty of resistance to the ACC scheduling the meeting in Dhaka. India, Sri Lanka, Afghanistan, Oman and few other associate member boards were adamant about not travelling to Dhaka," one insider added. He said the discussions on the sidelines of the ICC meeting don't augur well for the Asia Cup being held on schedule in September as the BCCI is not willing to send its representative to Dhaka. The ACC is currently headed by Naqvi. Originally India was scheduled to host the Asia Cup in September but due to the existing stand-off with Pakistan after the Pahalgam terror attack, the chances of the regional event being moved to UAE are high. Sumair was also sent to Dubai earlier this year to attend the Champions Trophy final ceremony but due to some "miscommunication", he was not a part of the officials who were on stage for the presentations. Interestingly in the expected revenue given in the budget for the fiscal year, the PCB has included 2.5 billion rupees as the estimated revenue from the next edition of the Pakistan Super League. The PCB's total budget for the fiscal year is around 18.8 billion rupees.

Chasing trophies in forties: 46-year-old Imran Tahir sets ultimate standard of longevity almost three decades as a professional
New Delhi [India], July 20 (ANI): Throughout cricket's rich history, several superstars of the game have redefined the concept of longevity at various times, whether through their level of activity at a certain age, trophies, records, or consistency. Be it the unmatched consistency offered by Indian legend Sachin Tendulkar, a fiery 22 year run at the frontline for England by pacer James Anderson or the records and team accomplishments achieved by Mithali Raj for India during the back-end of her 23-year-old career, the sport is full of examples where the phrase "ageing like fine wine" could be used to perfection. The latest entrant to this club of cricketers with rare levels of longevity is the South African spinner Imran Tahir. At the age of 46, this Lahore-born spinner is still an active force in the T20 league circuit across the world, recently leading Guyana Amazon Warriors to the Global Super League in the second season as a captain. As a captain, Tahir led from the front. The veteran spinner, known for running all over the field while celebrating, still bustles with energy that even several youngsters would envy. Not only did he take two wickets in the final against Rangpur Riders, but he also emerged as the 'Player of the Tournament' as a leading wicket-taker, with 14 scalps in five matches at an average of 9.28 and best figures of 4/12. He took two four-wicket hauls in the tournament. After his 40th birthday, Tahir has still maintained the consistency that gave him 293 international wickets for South Africa in 165 matches at an average of over 25. Since turning 40, Tahir has played a massive 200 T20 matches, picking up 266 wickets at an average of 18.54, with an economy rate of 6.86. His best figures are 5/25, having produced five four-wicket hauls and two five-wicket hauls after entering the fourth decade of his life. After his 40th birthday, he is the sixth-highest wicket-taker in T20 cricket worldwide. His bowling average and economy rate after turning 40 is better than his overall career stats in T20 cricket, with his overall bowling average being 19.69 and economy rate being 6.96. 200 of his 547 wickets in the format have come after the age of 40. His knockout stage statistics after turning 40 are solid, 28 wickets in 26 matches at an average of 25.57, with best figures of 3/7, making him one of the most reliable bowlers to turn to during a tough match, even at this age. In eight T20 competition finals after turning 40, he has picked up 11 wickets at an average of 18.00, at an economy rate of 6.71, with best figures of 3/33. The fourth decade of his life has been the one filled with championship titles and individual accomplishments, the Pakistan Super League (PSL) for Multan Sultans in 2021 (leading wicket taker for his team, overall fourth with 13 scalps at an average of 13.07, economy rate of 6.80), Caribbean Premier League 2023 title with Guyana Amazon Warriors (leading wicket-taker for his side and overall second-highest with 18 wickets at an average of 15.44 and economy rate of 6.22), the Indian Premier League (IPL) Purple Cap for most wickets in 2019 runners-up season with Chennai Super Kings (CSK) (26 wickets at an average of 16.57 and economy rate of 6.69), and the latest Global Super League. Three trophies, one of them as a captain and an IPL Purple Cap for one of the most successful franchises of the world after turning 40, seal Tahir's legacy as one of the greatest T20 cricketers ever. With his supreme fitness and dedication to his craft, he has opened up an avenue for cricketers to chase the adrenaline that comes with taking wickets, trophies, and awards, even after they slow down by international cricket standards. Having made his first-class cricket debut in 1996/97 and retiring from international cricket after the 2019 Cricket World Cup, Tahir's fitness and devotion to the art of spin bowling almost 30 years into the game are no doubt inspirational. Why did Pakistan exclude Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi from Bangladesh T20I squad, the reason is...
Babar Azam (L), Shaheen Afridi (R) The Pakistan Cricket Board picked a 15-member squad for the upcoming T20I series against Bangladesh. Salman Ali Agha is set lead Pakistan in the three-match series against Bangladesh, which is scheduled to commence from July 20. While many common names are on the squad for Pakistan's side, it came as a shock to fans that Babar Azam and Shaheen Afridi were not part of the squad. As the Men in Green gets ready to face Bangladesh, here is a look at why the two stars were left out for the T20I series. Babar Azam's steep fall in T20Is Babar Azam who is known for his outstanding stroke play, hasn't been in a good form recently. However, he once had decent numbers overall but his recent performance has seen a dip. Since the T20I World Cup last year, Babar has managed to score only 200 runs at a poor average of 25. But more importantly his strike rate with respect to scoring runs for Pakistan, has been a problem for them, as he has not been anything near standard in his role. In the same time period, Babar's strike rate reads 112.99, indicative of how tough of a task it has been to score runs too quickly. The Pakistan Super League gave him a golden opportunity to prove his worth and convince the selectors for T20I comeback, but his performance was not very impressive as he scored 288 runs at an average of 36 and a strike rate of 128.57. Shaheen Afridi's decline in form On the other hand, Shaheen Afridi performed much better in Pakistan Super League as he grabbed 19 wickets in twelve matches at an excellent strike rate of 12. Although Shaheen was superb throughout the tournament, he was dropped from the T20I squad, owing to his recent form in the format. Shaheen Afridi had a very disappointing tour of New Zealand, managing just two wickets in four matches. He also struggled with his economy rate, giving away 10.23 runs an over. As a result, Pakistan dropped him for their next T20I series. Mike Hesson, Pakistan's newly appointed head coach, mentioned that both these players' T20I selection is dependent solely on whether they can put consistent domestic performances together.

ENG vs IND: Is Liam Dawson a smart pick for England for Manchester Test?
After Shoaib Bashir was ruled out of the remainder of the Test series against India, England found themselves in a dilemma. While spin hasn't played a major role in the first three Tests, the hosts couldn't afford to rely solely on Joe Root's part-time off-spin - especially if their pacers failed to make with this challenge, England turned to Liam Dawson for the fourth Test in Manchester. It was a somewhat surprising decision given the available options, which included Rehan Ahmed, Tom Hartley, Jack Leach, and others. Dawson, after all, hasn't played a Test match since 2017 and has just three appearances in the format to his Dawson's selection, England selector Luke Wright said, "Liam Dawson deserves his call-up. He has been in outstanding form in the County Championship and consistently puts in strong performances for Hampshire."Is Dawson an apt replacement for Bashir? In terms of Test experience, Bashir has had a slightly greater taste of the longer format. However, when it comes to first-class cricket, Dawson's resume is far more substantial. With nearly two decades on the red-ball circuit, Dawson has faced top-tier batters in England's domestic competitions and in T20 leagues around the world, including the Pakistan Super League and The 212 first-class matches, Dawson has taken 371 wickets, including 16 four-wicket hauls, 15 five-wicket hauls, and three 10-wicket match hauls. Given his extensive experience, he has the ability to deliver key breakthroughs whenever called upon - especially in Manchester, where England's pace attack is expected to bear most of the heads into the Manchester Test on the back of a solid County Championship season with Hampshire. In nine matches, the left-arm spinner claimed 21 wickets across 16 innings, including a five-wicket also featured in the T20 Blast, picking up 11 wickets in his first 10 games at an economy rate of 7.27 - impressive for the format. All told, Dawson enters the fourth Test with a decent amount of recent match practice under his deepens England's battingWhile Dawson is undoubtedly skilled with the ball, his batting contributions shouldn't be overlooked. With 10,731 first-class runs at an average of 35.29, including 18 centuries and 56 half-centuries, Dawson is a significantly stronger batter than Bashir. His inclusion in the playing XI for the fourth Test would not only bolster England's spin options but also deepen their batting Dawson replaces Bashir, England could field a side where every player is capable of contributing with the bat-eliminating any clear tail-end and presenting a major challenge for India's current form with the bat adds further weight to his case. In this season's County Championship, he has scored 536 runs in nine matches at an average of 44.66, including a century and two fifties-highlighting his all-round value ahead of the Manchester their crushing 336-run defeat at Edgbaston, Ben Stokes' England side found themselves under considerable pressure. They nearly let things slip again at Lord's, scraping through with a narrow 22-run win at the Home of Cricket. Now, heading into the Manchester Test, England have a golden opportunity to take control of the series and potentially seal its fate with another victory.- EndsYou May Also Like
