US Army sergeant shot five soldiers at Georgia's Fort Stewart, official says
Radford opened fire where he worked but officials would not speculate about a motive, authorities said.
The injured soldiers are stable and expected to recover, said Brig Gen John Lubas. The soldiers who tackled Radford helped ensure his arrest, he said.
'These soldiers, without a doubt, prevented further casualties or wounded,' he said.
The injured were treated and then moved to Winn Army Community Hospital, base officials said in a Facebook post, adding there was no threat to the community.
Law enforcement was sent to the 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team complex shortly before 11am local time on Wednesday.
Radford was arrested at 11.35am, officials said.
The lockdown lasted about an hour, and three schools just outside the base took steps similar to a lockdown as well, 'out of an abundance of caution', the Liberty County School System said.
After the lockdown was lifted, cars began to move through the normal security checkpoint at the fort's main gate.
The army's 2nd Armoured Brigade Combat Team was created in 2016 when the service added more than 200 vehicles to an infantry unit of roughly 4,200 soldiers.
Also known as the Spartan Brigade, the army has called the unit its 'most modern land fighting force'.
Located about 40 miles south west of Savannah, Fort Stewart is the largest army post east of the Mississippi River.
It is home to thousands of soldiers assigned to the army's 3rd Infantry Division and family members.
The fort's three elementary schools were locked down, community superintendent Brian Perry told WTOC-TV.
The schools have nearly 1,400 students, according to the Department of Defence.
White House and Defence Department officials said President Donald Trump and Defence Secretary Pete Hegseth had been briefed on the shooting.
The FBI was at the fort to help investigate, said deputy director Dan Bongino.

Abbi Taylor pleaded guilty to dumping bags of toxic materials outside Newcastle nurseries earlier this year, with her defending lawyer saying she had done so to 'gain comfort' A woman who admitted to taunting "horrified" parents with rancid nappies and smearing faeces on nursery walls and bottles of milk has avoided prison. Abbi Taylor pleaded guilty in April to three counts of dumping bags of toxic materials - nappies containing human waste - at nurseries in South Shields, South Tyneside. Today she was sentenced to two years in prison, suspended for two years, after the judge heard about her "particularly difficult time" in custody. Newcastle Crown Court heard the 46-year-old local from Newmarket Walk had smeared faeces on milk bottles and the walls of a nursery, and had climbed in clinical waste bins for "comfort". She also admitted to stealing clinical waste bags from one business, and breaching a criminal behaviour order preventing her from entering within 10 metres of a nursery without reasonable comes after man called 999 for 'his own protection' - then ended up jailed himself. Prosecutor Jane Foley told the court that staff first noticed Taylor's bizarre behaviour when they found nappies had been dumped on the nursery premises in 2023. In May that year, one employee sad they saw Taylor exiting from one of the waste bins. The court heard she had seen "a pair of legs climb out from inside the bin and run off", and the manager at a South Shields nursery reported having seen someone "rooting around inside" a clinical waste bin four months earlier. Staff at one nursery in Jarrow said they initially believed a rival business may have been responsible for the waste after they discovered 50 soiled nappies on site. Ms Foley said staffers later found excrement smeared on milk bottles and the nursery fire escape. During the trial, the court heard she held a Facebook profile through which she referred to herself as an "adult baby diaper lover". Defending Taylor, Nick Lane said she was going to childcare settings to "gain comfort", having found what he said was a "coping mechanism" for a "very unfortunate" childhood. He added she appeared to be going through "age regression" and had no sexual interest in children, instead saying people with a nappy fetish often yearn for a "simpler, more care-free time". Taylor, who identified and was referred to in the court as a woman, was subject to a three-year criminal behaviour order preventing her from going within 100 metres of nursuries after she was convicted of causing harassment, alarm or distress at a local care provider.

Taylor would scramble into clinical waste bins for "comfort" and referred to herself on Facebook as an "adult baby diaper lover". The creep was handed a two year sentence, suspended for two years, after pleading guilty to three counts of dumping bags of toxic materials. Taylor also admitted admitted stealing clinical waste bags from one of the businesses and breaching a criminal behaviour order that barred them from being within 10m of a nursery. The judge, Recorder Richard Herrmann, said: "This is a highly unusual and highly troubling set of offences, made all the more troubling by your failure to properly and fully explain the motivation behind your bizarre offending." Newcastle Crown Court heard Taylor terrorised nurseries in the South Shields area over a six-year period. Staff at one premises discovered the dirty diapers in May 2023 - then spotted a "pair of legs" clambering out of one of the waste bins. Another nursery believed a rival business was dumping waste when they found 50 soiled nappies. Taylor had also smeared faeces on milk bottles and the fire escape. In April 2023, magistrates slapped Taylor with a three-year criminal behaviour order preventing the perv from going within 100m of nurseries. But Taylor flouted the order and continued to target nurseries in the area. A victim statement from one boss said the behaviour was "really unsettling" adding: "You never knew what you were going to find." Businesses suffered as a result of having to pay to improve security measures, the court was told. Staff at one nursery were also so concerned they went in pairs when going outside to put soiled waste into the bins. Jane Foley, prosecuting, said Taylor had "flagrantly disregarded the law". The court heard Taylor is thought to be "regressing" to childhood and searching for a "gentler more carefree time". Nick Lane, defending, added: "Miss Taylor accepts going to childcare settings and entering the bins… in order to gain comfort."
