Marana father charged in death of his toddler given permission to go on family vacation to Hawaii

Yahoo10-05-2025
A father facing charges in the death of his 2-year-old daughter was granted court approval to travel to Hawaii for a family vacation.
The defendant, Christopher Scholtes, of Marana, requested permission to travel to Maui from May 1 to May 9 with his wife and their two daughters, stating they planned to stay with friends of the couple.
Scholtes faces one count of first-degree murder and domestic violence, classified as a Class 1 felony. He also is charged with one count of intentional or knowing child abuse — a Class 2 felony — after being accused of endangering his daughter by leaving her in a hot car.
A Pima County judge granted Scholtes permission to travel out of state for a family vacation. Court documents said, "The court finds good cause to grant the Defendant's Request to Travel."
According to court documents, at the time of the request, Scholtes was released on his own recognizance under the supervision of Pretrial Services. The documents also state that he signed a Waiver of Extradition and was instructed to contact his defense counsel and Pretrial Services officer upon his return to Arizona on May 10.
The Pima County Attorney's Office said, "The public record would show that the defendant and his counsel requested permission from the court to travel out-of-state. Our prosecutors strenuously objected. The court granted permission over our objection."
In March, Scholtes rejected a deal offering him a sentence between 10 and 25 years if he pleaded guilty to second-degree murder. He now awaits trial on the first-degree murder charge, which comes with the possibility of a life sentence if he is convicted.
Scholtes' next court appearance was scheduled for Aug. 11.

Ketel Marte's post-burglary actions irking Diamondbacks teammates

Ketel Marte is reportedly frustrating his teammates, though his manager pushed back against the severity of that narrative. The Arizona Republic reported Thursday that some Diamondbacks players and 'others in the organization have quietly grumbled about' the star second baseman's 'propensity to ask for days off.' Marte, 31, reportedly asked for a day off in Arizona's final game before the All-Star break. The outlet wrote that Marte 'raised eyebrows' when he 'motored around the bases in Atlanta on a double in the All-Star Game' after taking a game off just days earlier. But Diamondbacks manager Torey Lovullo, who said he was unaware of the timing of the break-in, didn't feel as if he needed to address the clubhouse over it, he told Arizona Sports 98.7 FM. Ketel Marte of the Arizona Diamondbacks gestures to the crowd after hitting a three-run home run in the ninth inning against the Texas Rangers at Globe Life Field on August 13, 2025 in Arlington, Texas. Getty Images 'I will say that Ketel Marte has a massive heart,' Lovullo said. 'He is extremely emotional. He loves to play. He wants to be in the middle of everything with his teammates every single day.' During the break, Marte, who traveled to the Dominican Republic after playing in the All-Star Game, had his home in Arizona burglarized, losing about $400,000 worth of items. Marte then took three more games off post-All-Star break, although he stayed in the Dominican Republic rather than return to his home in Scottsdale after the burglary. Per the Arizona Republic report, some inside the franchise believe Marte's 'departure around the All-Star break set in motion the collapse that led to the Diamondbacks' trade deadline sell-off.' The Diamondbacks are in the midst of a disappointing season, sitting at 60-62 heading into Friday's play, after finishing above .500 in each of the past two seasons, including a World Series appearance in 2023. The franchise traded away several key pieces — Josh Naylor, Eugenio Suarez, Merrill Kelly, Randal Grichuk and Shelby Miller — ahead of the deadline when it appeared a playoff run wasn't in the cards this season. Getty Images The situation has led some of the Arizona Republic's sources to wonder if the team should trade Marte, who has been in a Diamondbacks uniform since 2017 and signed a six-year, $116.5 million contract extension in April, over the offseason. Marte is one of the top second basemen in baseball, making three All-Star teams and twice finishing in the top five of the National League MVP voting. This year, he's enjoying another excellent season, hitting .296/.398/.557 with 23 home runs in 89 games. But his actions have some of those who play alongside him every day wondering if his production is worth the trouble. 'He is a great player, they say, when he wants to be,' the Arizona Republic wrote.

Where is Indiana's 'Alligator Alcatraz'? About the prison Kristi Noem called 'Speedway Slammer'

Miami Correctional Facility is almost 70 miles from the city of Speedway and Indiana's famous racetrack. But when the U.S. secretary of Homeland Security announced a plan to house ICE detainees there, its social media post incorporated imagery evoking the Indianapolis Motor Speedway. The image, which appears to have been created with AI, shows the prison in the background. In the foreground is a track with a race car with "ICE" on the side. Here's what happened. In the vein of the recent "Alligator Alcatraz," U.S. Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem in an X post gave the facility a nickname when she announced a plan to house detainees there. For Hoosiers, "Speedway" can refer to either the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, where the famed Indy 500 takes place, or the Marion County town of Speedway, which is home to the racetrack. Story continues after photo gallery. Noem thanked Indiana Gov. Mike Braun for partnering with the Trump administration to create an ICE detention center. She told immigrants in a social media post to "self deport" if they are in the country illegally. "If you are in America illegally, you could find yourself in Indiana's Speedway Slammer. Avoid arrest and self deport now using the @CBP Home App,' Noem said in a statement on X. Noem said Arizona is also a potential site for federal detainees, but according to reporting by the Arizona Republic, a spokesperson for Gov. Katie Hobbs said her office has not been contacted by Noem. The spokesperson said the state "will not participate" in building a facility for ICE detainees. Gov. Mike Braun signed an executive order in January 2025 that directed Indiana law enforcement agencies to "fully cooperate" with a federal crackdown on illegal immigration. His office announced Aug. 1 that the Indiana Department of Correction would add 1,000 beds at the Miami Correctional Facility for immigrant detainees. "When it comes to our state, we're going to cooperate ... as we're housing detainees that have broken the law after they entered illegally, we're going to cooperate with the federal government," Braun told the IndyStar. "When it comes to any of the other issues on due process and so forth, we want to make sure we're doing that the right way as well." The Miami Correctional Facility, a maximum-security prison located at the former Grissom Air Force Base about 70 miles north of Indianapolis, can house up to 3,100 people. Annie Goeller, chief communications officer for IDOC, said part of the facility has not been filled because of a staffing shortage. On July 15, Defense Secretary Pete Hegseth outlined plans to use Camp Atterbury as one of two new sites that would be used to temporarily hold "illegal aliens" for the Department of Homeland Security. The Trump administration is prepared to hold up to 1,000 ICE detainees at this military facility, according to Democratic U.S. Rep André Carson. Penske Entertainment, owner of the Indianapolis Motor Speedway, isn't happy with Homeland Security's use of an IndyCar chassis in imagery announcing the plan to house ICE detainees in an Indiana detention center. 'Consistent with our approach to public policy and political issues, we are communicating our preference that our IP not be utilized moving forward in relation to this matter," Penske Entertainment said in a statement provided to IndyStar. The number on the car shown in a social media post from Homeland Security has the number 5, which has been used for five years by Pato O'Ward. Ward, the series' most popular driver, is also IndyCar's only Mexican driver. Man dies saving 2 boys from drowning in Arizona's Colorado River

'He was a giant of a man, but his heart was pure gold,' Jeffrey Brady's friend, Summer Needham, told a local TV station. A 51-year-old man drowned after saving two children in the Colorado River over the weekend, authorities said. The incident occurred near Hidden Shores Resort, located in Yuma, Arizona, on Saturday, July 5, according to the Arizona Republic, part of the USA TODAY Network. Deputies with the Yuma County Sheriff's Office responded to the scene just after noon. A group of individuals was at the Horseshoe Island sandbar when the children "were pulled off the shallows by the current," according to the sheriff's office. Jeffrey Brady pronounced dead following underwater search The man, identified as Jeffrey Brady, dove into the water to rescue the children, Yuma County Sheriff's Office spokesperson Tania Pavlak told the Arizona Republic. He was able to keep them afloat until a vessel was able to bring the boys to safety, she added. Brady struggled to stay above the water and did not resurface, according to the news release. The Yuma County Sheriff's Office, in collaboration with multiple other agencies, conducted an underwater search. Brady's body was recovered around 7:00 p.m. on July 5. Jeffrey Brady had 'heart of gold' Brady recently moved from California to Yuma and lived there with his partner, Elen, and his blind father in his newly purchased home, according to a GoFundMe. He was from San Diego, per NBC 7 San Diego. The fundraiser describes Brady as a "protector, a provider, and a selfless hero." The rescued boys, a 10-year-old and a 12-year-old, were his girlfriend's nephews, according to the GoFundMe. Created to aid with funeral-related expenses and other needs, the GoFundMe has raised over $88,000 as of Wednesday, July 9. 'He was a giant of a man, but his heart was pure gold,' Brady's friend, Summer Needham, told KUSI. Joann Ripley, another one of Brady's longtime friends, said, 'It's not shocking or surprising at all that he was the one that went in after (the boys) and saved them,' per the San Diego-based TV station.
