EGP 9.3bn allocated to 44,400 farmers under National Veal Project: Agriculture Minister
The National Veal Project, led by Minister of Agriculture and Land Reclamation Alaa Farouk, has approved EGP 299.6m in funding for 428 small-scale farmers and young graduates. This support will facilitate the purchase of 4,280 head of cattle under the presidential 'Decent Life' initiative, launched by President Abdel Fattah Al-Sisi to enhance rural livelihoods.
Minister Farouk announced that total project funding has now surpassed EGP 9.3bn, benefiting approximately 44,400 farmers. This investment has supported the breeding and fattening of over 514,000 cattle, including beef calves and high-yield dairy heifers, ensuring a stable supply of meat and dairy products.
The minister instructed the Livestock and Poultry Development Sector and the General Authority for Veterinary Services to collaborate with local agricultural and veterinary directorates to conduct field follow-ups, provide veterinary care, and address any challenges beneficiaries may face.
Deputy Minister of Agriculture Mostafa El-Sayyad emphasized the National Veal Project's role in stabilizing red meat prices, benefiting both producers and consumers. He noted that all participating farms undergo inspections by the Ministry of Agriculture, in coordination with the Agricultural Bank of Egypt (ABE) and the National Bank of Egypt (NBE), ensuring they meet the necessary space and facility requirements.
Once approved, farmers must insure their livestock through the Livestock Insurance Fund at a reduced rate. Regular inspections and follow-ups are carried out by the Livestock and Poultry Development Sector, the General Authority for Veterinary Services, and local authorities to ensure compliance and success.
Tarek Soliman, Head of the Livestock and Poultry Development Sector, encouraged interested farmers to apply for support through their nearest agricultural administration office, an ABE or NBE branch, or by contacting the sector directly.

Fernandes Declines Al Hilal Offer, Decides Old Trafford Stay
Rana Atef Manchester United striker Bruno Fernandes turned down Saudi Al Hilal's offer and decided to stay with Manchester United. Al Hilal are exploring a deal for the Portugal midfielder as they looked to make the signing before the FIFA Club World Cup, but Fernandes said at Portugal's conference on Tuesday that he wanted to stay at the highest level and play in "big competitions." Fernandes said in the press conference: "I will respond and ask that you not ask me about this anymore," adding: "There was that possibility, the president of Al Hilal called me a month ago to ask me about it. I took some time to think about the future. As I have always said, I would be willing, if Man United thought so. I spoke to coach Ruben Amorim, who, throughout this period, urged me not to go. "The club [United] said they would not be willing to sell me, only if I wanted to leave, that it was not a financial issue. It was a very ambitious proposal." According to ESPN sources familiar with negotiations, Al Hilal would pay around £100 million ($135m) for Fernandes and put together a package that would have significantly increased his salary. Central Banks Slow Down Gold Purchases in April as Poland Continues to Lead
Waleed Farouk Data from the World Gold Council shows that central banks around the world added a net total of only 12 tonnes of gold to their reserves in April. This marks the second consecutive month of slowing purchases, down 12% from March, and well below the 12-month average monthly purchase of 28 tonnes. The report suggests that this slowdown may partly be due to the sharp rise in gold prices since the start of the year, prompting some banks to temporarily scale back purchases, even though central bank decisions are usually based on long-term strategic considerations. Poland Remains Top Buyer, with China and Turkey Among Key Additions Notable changes in central bank gold reserves during April included: Poland: The National Bank of Poland added 12 tonnes, raising its reserves to 509 tonnes—surpassing the European Central Bank's holdings of 507 tonnes. Since the beginning of the year, Poland has increased its reserves by 61 tonnes. Czech Republic: Continued its buying streak by adding 3 tonnes, marking the 26th consecutive month of purchases. China: Added 2 tonnes in April, bringing its total purchases for 2025 to 15 tonnes and its overall reserves to 2,294 tonnes. Turkey: Increased its gold reserves by 2 tonnes, reaching a total of 626 tonnes. Kyrgyzstan: Made its first purchase since December, adding 2 tonnes. However, it remains a net seller for the year, with total sales amounting to 2 tonnes. Kazakhstan and Jordan: Each added around 1 tonne to their reserves. Uzbekistan: Sold 11 tonnes in April, marking the third consecutive month of sales. Its total gold sales for the year now stand at 26 tonnes. India Updates Reserve Data and Increases Domestic Holdings India kept its gold reserves unchanged at 880 tonnes. However, in its semi-annual report, it clarified that 512 tonnes (58%) of those reserves are now stored domestically, compared to 510 tonnes (60%) six months ago. This reflects a broader effort by the Reserve Bank of India to enhance local storage, up from just 38% two years ago. Notable Moves by African Central Banks Toward Gold Several African central banks have announced plans to strengthen their gold reserves, including: Namibia: Plans to raise gold's share of total reserves to 3% for the first time. Rwanda: Approved the start of gold purchases beginning in July. Uganda: Announced it will use gold from artisanal mining to boost reserves and meet future financial obligations. Madagascar: Plans to purchase 4 tonnes as part of a strategy to expand its reserves and regulate gold exports.
