Bihar's Shatakshi working on ‘slow start' while eyeing inter state nationals

Time of India5 days ago
Kolkata: Shatakshi Rai couldn't have hoped for a better result at home.
After running her personal best of 11.91 seconds in 100m at the Indian Grand Prix 2 in Trivandrum and putting up an impressive show at the state meet early this month, the Patna girl won the overall 100m at the Indian Open Athletics ahead of Srabani Nanda at Patliputra Sports Complex in Kankarbagh, Patna, on Saturday.
The 23-year-old ran 12.04 seconds in Race A, which was .01 faster than Nanda, who ran 12.05 seconds in Race C, and is now looking forward to continuing her good show at the National Inter State Senior Athletics Championships in Chennai next month.
But to do well there she will have to work on her start, and she is well aware of it.
"Something I'm confident about is my max velocity. And when I'm at my max velocity, I can catch most of the athletes.
But I have a very slow start. My reaction is not good. That is something I need to work on," said Rai during an interaction with TOI.
Besides the Chennai meet, she will be competing at two more events this year, but her main target is to make it to the Asian Games and the Commonwealth Games in 2026.
It will be quite an achievement for Rai, who had two surgeries, the latest of which was just two years back, because she was having constant injuries.

"I had two ACL reconstruction surgeries on my left knee — the first in 2019 and the second in 2023. It's been about two years since I started training again, and my progress has been very encouraging. I've been hitting personal bests in almost every competition," added the Patna athlete, who trains at Kalinga Stadium in Bhubaneswar under former India sprinter Manikanta Raj.
And training in Bhubaneswar itself has been quite an experience for the KIIT University student, who is doing masters in Transportation Engineering.
"I got to train with one of my idols — Dutee Chand — for a few months, and it was special. The environment is very professional, and you are always surrounded by other major athletes, and that gives you competitive energy," she further added.
However, she wasn't too pleased with her performance at the Indian Open Athletics but felt good beating Nanda, who was part of the 4x100m relay team that won the silver in the Asian Athletics Championships.
"She's a legend. She has achieved so much success. Obviously, timing better than her was a very good experience. But I know I must work hard to get to her level," she said.
Hopefully, she will be able to do that with the support from her coach and her parents, but, for now, this win will certainly give her a huge boost that will inspire her to work even harder.

Tejaswin Shankar tops decathlon standings after Day 1 of Wieslaw Czapiewski Memorial

India's Tejaswin Shankar topped the standings in decathlon with 4292 points on Saturday at the end of Day 1 of the 4th Wieslaw Czapiewski Memorial, a World Athletics Combined Events Tour Gold meeting in Poland. He has a 155-point lead over Czechia's Vilem Strasky. Switzerland's Finley Gaio sits third with 4102 points. The first event of the decathlon was the 100m where Tejaswin clocked a Personal Best of 11.02 seconds, which helped him top his heat. The 26-year-old Indian then jumped 7.57m in long jump, a Season Best, to jump to second place in the overall standings. However, a poor showing in shot put — a best throw of 12.62m — saw him drop down to sixth. Tejaswin recovered well to take the overall lead after recording a best attempt of 2.18m in high jump. In the final event of the day, 400m, he clocked a Season Best timing of 48.87s. Tejaswin currently holds the decathlon National Record of 7666 points, which he achieved during the 2023 Asian Games. The qualification standard for the event at the upcoming 2025 World Athletics Championships in Tokyo is 8550 points. Related Topics Tejaswin Shankar

IND vs ENG: England captain Ben Stokes reacts after India batters decline handshake, draw offered on Day 5 of 4th Test

Ben Stokes with England teammate (PTI Photo) in Manchester: In an unusual end to the fourth Test at Old Trafford, England skipper Ben Stokes on Sunday offered a handshake to signal a mutual draw, only to be refused by Indian batters Ravindra Jadeja and Washington Sundar, both closing in on individual centuries. While the moment drew reactions ranging from amusement to tension, Stokes later revealed his reasoning during the post-match press conference. Go Beyond The Boundary with our YouTube channel. SUBSCRIBE NOW! 'With the draw inevitable, I wasn't going to risk any of our main bowlers,' Stokes told reporters in the post-match press conference. 'There's a big game coming up in just three days, and we've had a heavy workload. It was just about protecting our resources.' Stokes, who had been nursing visible discomfort and admitted to being 'physically a bit bad", emphasised the need to manage player fatigue. 'It's been a big week at Lord's and here again. Pain is just an emotion, but everyone's a bit sore. We'll need to use the rest period wisely,' he added. Poll Was Ben Stokes' handshake offer to India a good sportsmanship gesture? Yes, it showed respect No, it was an unnecessary distraction At the time of the handshake offer, India were 386/4 with a 75-run lead, having fought back from 0/2 early in their second innings. Jadeja (89 not out) and Sundar (80 not out) had batted England out of the contest with a gritty 150-run stand, showing no signs of slowing down. Stokes's offer, though rooted in practicality, was declined, and the decision made waves. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Mini House for 60 sqm for Seniors with Toilet and Bath (Price May Surprise You) Pre Fabricated Homes | Search Ads Search Now Undo Sarcastically asking if they 'wanted to score a hundred off Harry Brook ,' Stokes received a humble reply from Jadeja: 'I can't do anything.' Jadeja later sealed his century with a six off Brook. Sundar also got his ton later. India's captain Shubman Gill defended the choice to continue batting, saying, 'It was up to the boys, but we felt they batted brilliantly. Both of them were in their 90s, and we believed they deserved to get to their centuries.' While England may have found the moment frustrating, it was a reminder of how individual milestones and strategy often shape cricket's unwritten scripts, especially in the longest format.
