Bob MacIntyre dug deep to stop his RBC Canadian Open title defence from ending prematurely after finding himself below the projected cut line in the second round in Ontario. The Oban man had started the day in joint-ninth, just four shots off the overnight lead, after carding a bogey-free five-under-par 65 in the opening circuit on the North Course at TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad After opening with a birdie from 11 feet at the par-4 tenth, MacIntyre looked as though he was set to take up where he'd left off on Thursday only to quickly find himself on the back foot. Bob MacIntyre reacts to a missed putt during the second round of the RBC Canadian Open TPC Toronto at Osprey Valley in Caledon, Ontario |His tee shot at the par-3 11th found the water, leading to a double bogey and, for the next couple of hours, it turned into a tough struggle for the Scot. He also dropped a shot at the par-5 18th then the second and third as well and, at that point in his round, was facing an early exit after slipping to one under for the tournament. Not for the first time recently, though, MacIntyre showed that he can rise to the challenge when his back is against the wall. He rolled in a 20-footer for a birdie-3 at the par-4 fifth then hit his tee shot at the 220-yard par-3 seventh to five feet. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad He found sand off the tee at the ninth then was just off the green with his approach but got up and down to save par, signing for a two-over 72 to sit on three under and make it through to the weekend sitting joint-53rd. It wasn't what he'd have been looking for setting out but, on the plus side and a potential big one at that, the left-hander avoided what would have been a big disappointment heading into next week's 125th US Open at Oakmont. On the back of two encouraging performances in the Charles Schwab Challenge and the Memorial Tournament, he's up to 12th on Europe's Ryder Cup points list and, importantly in his bid to make Luke Donald's team again after being part of a winning side in Rome in 2023, can now maintain his momentum. Shane Lowry, who was playing in the same group as MacIntyre, followed his opening 64 with a 68 to sit on eight under, four shots behind the halfway leader, Cameron Champ, after the American added a 66 to his first-day 62. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Former Dunhill Links champion Ryan Fox, who recently landed his maiden breakthrough win on the PGA Tour, is heading into the weekend alongside Lowry after carding a brace of 66s, but it was an event to forget for Masters champion Rory McIlroy as he crashed out on nine over following an error-strewn second-round 78. Connor Syme weighs up a shot with caddie Ryan McGuigan in the tough second-round conditions in the Netherlands |On the DP World Tour, meanwhile, breaking par proved a tough task in windy conditions for the second round of the KLM Open at The International in Amsterdam, where play was halted for more than two hours in the middle of the afternoon. After carding a splendid 68, Swede Joakim Lagergren posted the clubhouse target with an eight-under total, with Connor Syme just three behind after battling to the bitter end for his 72. The Drumoig-player holed a six-footer for a bogey at the ninth - his final hole - and was delighted with his day's work. 'It was so, so hard,' said Syme. 'Every single part of it was tricky. I think overall I missed it in the right spots. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad 'I could be annoyed with a couple of three-putts, but I made a couple of good saves as well and I am happy to make the putt for bogey as the ninth is a really tough hole. It would have been sore to finish with a double considering how well I battled and it was a pretty good score.' The 29-year-old, who is chasing a maiden win on the main tour, added: 'As it was a late finish last night, it was a case of getting a quick bowl of pasta then trying to rest as much as possible and get a good sleep. You hoped it was going to be calmer than was being forecast, but it was pumping straight from the start today. 'It was so tough. You've just got to try and control your ball the best you can as it was very, very tricky. Anything around par is a great score.' More of the same weather-wise is on the cards for Saturday. 'I won't say I love playing in these conditions, but I am very used to it as trying to keep the ball under the wind is what we were brought up playing in,' said Syme. 'We obviously don't play in conditions like these that much on tour, but I'll just try to keep battling on over the weekend.' Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Richie Ramsay, who opened with a 66 on his return to action after being laid low by a 'virus' in recent weeks, was among the players who returned on Saturday morning to complete their second circuits, signing for a 72 to sit one behind Syme. Rookie pro Lorna McClymont is safely through to the weekend in the Tenerife Ladies Open at Abama Golf | Mark Runnacles/LET On the Ladies European Tour, Lorna McClymont followed a first-day 70 with a 73 to sit joint-20th on one under at the halfway stage in the Tenerife Ladies Open at Abama Golf, where Laura Beveridge also progressed to the weekend after a second-round 70 left her on level par. In the amateur ranks, Scottish duo Cameron Adam and Niall Shiels Donegan both made solid starts in the St Andrews Links Trophy as the first-round action took place on the Jubilee Course. Adam, the 2023 Scottish Amateur champion from Royal Burgess, covered the last seven holes in three under to card a four-under 68, with California-based Shiels Donegan matching that effort with a round that contained five birdies. An already high-calibre field has been boosted the presence of another of golf's true superstars ahead of next month's Genesis Scottish Open. The likes of Xander Schauffele, Collin Morikawa, Justin Thomas and Rory McIlroy have already confirmed they will head to Renaissance Club in North Berwick and compete for a prize fund believed to be in excess of £6.6million. Major champions Matt Fitzpatrick and Justin Rose have also entered and they will be joined by defending champion Robert McIntyre, who saw off the challenge of New Zealander Adam Scott to land only the second PGA Tour win of his career and his first on home soil last year. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad However, it is the confirmation world number one Scottie Scheffler will return to the Scottish Open that will provide the biggest boost to the tournament organisers. The three-time major championship winner has been a regular competitor at the East Lothian course - but missed out on last year's tournament after turning his focus to a successful pursuit of a gold medal at the Paris Olympics. However, Scheffler has now confirmed he will return next month and his announcement means all of the current top five players in the official World Golf Ranking will be amongst the field. Such is the strength of the field, Russell Henley, Hideki Matsuyama and Bryson DeChambeau, who is ineligible for PGA Tour events due to being a LIV Golf player, are the only absentees from the current top ten ahead of next month's tournament. Scheffler said: "I'm looking forward to getting back to the Genesis Scottish Open next month. It's an event and a course I enjoy playing given we only get to play links golf a couple of times a year. Playing in such a strong field and in front of the Scottish fans is always fun for us." What did Robert MacIntyre say after winning the 2024 Scottish Open? MacIntyre ended a 25-year wait for a Scottish winner of the tournament when he carded a total score of 18 under to win by just one stroke 12 months ago. Advertisement Hide Ad Advertisement Hide Ad Getty Images Speaking to Sky Sports after his win, the Oban-born star said: 'I think I lost my voice after the scream on that hole. I thought I was short. I've put a lot of work into this. I've changed a lot within the team and I've just worked hard. I wanted The Scottish Open. I got a bit of luck on 16 that you need to win golf tournaments. I couldn't believe when I heard a sprinkler under my foot. It was covered and I thought: I got lucky, it was meant to be. Next week is a new week but I tell you, I'm going to celebrate this with my family, friends, and everyone here. I'm going to celebrate this one hard. We'll pitch up to the Open when we pitch up to the Open.' Your next sport read: Former Hibs star eyed for Juventus transfer as Serie A giants grant 'green light' to make bumper advances

'Best looking Premier League player' stunned Laura Woods when he said she'd be his dream date

'Best looking Premier League player' stunned Laura Woods when he said she'd be his dream date Laura Woods has done many things throughout her career in sports broadcasting, but fans always enjoyed her segments where she discussed the dream dates of several sports stars One of Laura Woods' go-to questions on the radio was to ask sports stars who their dream date would be (Image: Photo by James Gill - Danehouse/Getty Images ) Before Laura Woods got engaged to ex-Love Island star Adam Collard, former Chelsea and Premier League midfielder Ruben Loftus-Cheek said he would like to go on a date with her. With a strong following on social media, Woods has captured the hearts of many fans and sports personalities throughout her career. While she has established herself as a top television presenter, many of her admirers will always refer to her classic segments on talkSPORT, where she and Ally McCoist enjoyed asking their interview subjects who they would like to take on a first date. ‌ In an interview with Loftus-Cheek, who now plays for AC Milan, the ex-England international took her by surprise when he chose Woods herself. Considering her comments in the months after that interview, Loftus-Cheek may have felt like he should have made a serious offer. ‌ In another interview, she was reminded about that particular moment, which amused many football fans. Woods went on to describe him as one of the most handsome players in the Premier League. In an interview with the Staying Relevant podcast in 2023, she said: "On talkSPORT, we love anything like that if it's a great opportunity to talk about sex. Someone had asked Anthony Joshua who his dream date was and he said Beyonce. "So we all did our dream dates and tried to get a date off the back of it. I said [actor] Leo Suter, he is amazing. Ally [McCoist] said Claudia Schiffer. After that I had to do an interview with Ruben Loftus-Cheek and asked him the same thing and he said me. Article continues below "I was like, 'Good god.' Ruben is probably the best looking player in the Premier League. I didn't mind that at all! That is the quote for my wall. It is excellent to have an association with someone who looks like he has been carved by Jesus." Loftus-Cheek made his thoughts perfectly clear on Woods (Image: Photo by Image) Loftus-Cheek wasn't the last British athlete to pick her on the segment. Former heavyweight boxing champion of the world Anthony Joshua also followed Loftus-Cheek's lead when he was asked to choose somebody to go for a date with. ‌ He told the presenter: "You. I know Loftus-Cheek has beaten me to it," to which Woods responded: "It's fine, there's no competition!" Woods and Collard's relationship has accelerated ever since they confirmed they were dating in October 2023. Just under 12 months after they announced they were an item, Collard got down on one knee at a beach in Cornwall and asked Woods to marry him. Woods opened up about the difficulty she had working at Euro 2024 while pregnant (Image: 2024 Simon Stacpoole/Offside ) ‌ Woods would go on to announce that she had given birth to their son, Leo Ernie Collard, in January 2025. In August 2024, before she went into labour, she spoke to The Times and revealed that she was battling morning sickness while she was working at the 2024 European Championships. She said: "It was constant, the morning sickness was quite difficult to battle and I was exhausted all the time. At least there were rest days when I was able to just chill out in my [hotel] room. Article continues below "I would have liked to keep it quiet for a little bit longer but I really felt like I couldn't any more and now I've done it it's a relief."
