AC Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri announced Luka Modric will join the team in August, missing the pre-season tour.
AC Milan head coach Massimiliano Allegri disclosed that Luka Modric will join the team in August, which is why he has been left out of the squad that traveled to Singapore for their first pre-season friendly.
Modric joined the Serie A side after contributing to Real Madrid's journey to the semi-finals of the FIFA Club World Cup. Consequently, he was omitted from the squad for their pre-season tour, which includes stops in Hong Kong and Perth after facing Arsenal on July 23 to play against Liverpool and Perth Glory.
'We expect him to join us in August. He's a top player who will add technical brilliance and leadership to the squad," said Allegri in the pre-game press conference.
Who Is Luka Modric?
Since arriving from Tottenham Hotspur in 2012, Modric overcame a challenging start to become a legendary figure at Real Madrid. With nearly 600 appearances and almost 30 major trophies, including a record six UEFA Champions League titles and four La Liga crowns, Modric's impact has been monumental.
Allegri has returned to AC Milan, having previously managed the team for a four-year stint between 2010 and 2014, during which he led them to a Serie A title in 2010/11 and won the Italian Supercup the following year.
Allegri's latest tenure as head coach was with Juventus from 2021 to 2024, marking his second stint with the team. In his first stint, he won five consecutive Serie A titles from 2014/15 to 2018/19 and guided the team to two Champions League finals.
Milan reappointed Allegri after Conceicao's five-month tenure left the team without European football next season.
The Italian coach is optimistic despite this setback, focusing on the positives.
'It's a different situation than it was 15 years ago. It's not only football that has changed, but the world in general. The positive aspect of not playing in the Champions League is that we'll have more time to work and build a team. The negative is that we're not playing on the big stage. But I'm a glass-half-full kind of guy, so we have time and the chance to work on qualifying. I'm confident in my players, because I think this is a talented group with a good mindset," he added.

Super 6: How Arsenal's six recent transfers might finally take them to the promised land

'I always want to score,' might sound like a relatively run of the mill quote from new Arsenal signing Viktor Gyokeres but it might be a warning shot by the Gunners to the Premier League as they get set for another crack at winning the elusive league title as well as Champions League silverware. At long last, they have a No.9, the first out and out striker since 2022 when they brought in Gabriel Jesus from Manchester City. After that signing underwhelmed, Arsenal had to do with playing Kai Havertz and Mikel Merino up front, which severely limited their goal scoring chances. The Gunners are currently on a warpath in the transfer market, already signing 6 players before July has even ended. The closest they got to this transfer spree was back in the 2022/23 season when they snapped up Fabio Viera, Marquinhos, Matt Turner, Jesus and Oleksandr Zinchenko. That year was supposed to be their season but they finished second in the league. The class of 2022/23, however, pales in comparison to the players Arsenal have already recruited by July this year. Martín Zubimendi, Gyokeres, Noni Madueke, Cristhian Mosquera, Christian Norgaard and Kepa Arrizabalaga are all largely big-name signings, which plug in the gaps on most of Arsenal's problem positions. Here to raise the levels. Kepa Arrizabalaga is a Gunner. — Arsenal (@Arsenal) July 1, 2025 This might also be the last throw of dice for Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta who after taking charge in 2019 has just a FA Cup and two Community Shields to show for his efforts. However, under him, Arsenal have found an identity that they lacked in the fag end of Arsene Wenger's run and Unai Emery's tenure. The Gunners under Arteta have turned into serious title contenders, finishing 2nd in the league for the last 3 seasons. The recent signings might just be the final push that Arsenal need to finally clinch the big one. It will also satisfy a fanbase which more often than not accuse the club of dragging their feet in the transfer market and then panic-buy players who do not fit into Arteta's vision. While that's not always the case, the 2024/25 transfer window was a genuine head-scratcher from the club. They took the entire summer transfer window to sign three players, goalkeeper David Raya whose loan was made permanent and Riccardo Calafiori in July and then Mikel Merino in August. With time running out, they also signed Chelsea outcast Raheem Sterling on loan on deadline day which turned out to be a damp squib. But the transfers they have made so far have been inspired. Zubimendi is a Euro 2024 winning midfielder who will provide the necessary stability in the centre along with Declan Rice and Martin Odegaard, a trio which will be a nightmare to deal with on song. Madueke, a UEFA Conference League and Club World Cup winner, will mostly be used as a backup to Bukayo Saka but can also slot into the left wing if needed. However, he might have to compete with Leandro Trossard and Gabriel Martinelli in that position. Kepa, who still holds the record for the highest goalkeeper transfer when he arrived in Chelsea for £71.6m in 2018, will have to stay content on the bench but is more than an adequate cover for Raya. Meanwhile, ex-Brentford captain Norgaard and Mosquera will mostly serve as competition to the first team players in the midfield and centre back respectively. Finally, the big Swede Gyokeres, the crown jewel of Arsenal's transfer season so far, will slot in straight into the top of the Gunners attack which guarantees them a boatload of goals. With the Arsenal midfielders adept at providing delicious crosses and venomous corners, Gyokeres is the perfect man to be at the end of them. However, if rumours are to be believed with over one month left in the transfer window, Arsenal might look to bring in more signings with Real Madrid's Rodrygo and Crystal Palace's Eberechi Eze firmly in their radar. Arsenal's transfer activity is not a surprise though with most of their rivals having strengthened their respective squads. Defending champions Liverpool have already signed huge names like Jeremie Frimpong, Milos Kerkez, Florian Wirtz, Hugo Ekitike and are almost certain to land Newcastle forward Alexander Isak while Manchester City have brought in Rayan Cherki, Tijjani Reijnders, Rayan Ait-Nouri, Marcus Bettinelli and Sverre Nypan. Arsenal's journey to the title won't be easy but with the six transfers they have pulled off till now, this might be their best chance to glory.

New Delhi, Jul 29 (PTI) Asian Games gold medallists Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty returned to top 10 in the BWF mens' doubles World Rankings released on Tuesday, climbing three spots following their semifinal finish at the China Open last week. The former world No. 1 duo, now ranked 10th, lost to the Malaysian pair of Aaron Chia and Soh Wooi Yik 13-21, 17-21 in the semifinals. This was their third semifinal appearance on the BWF Tour this season, having earlier reached the last four at the Singapore Open and India Open. The Indian pair had reclaimed the world No. 1 ranking after the title win at the Thailand Open last year. In men's singles, top-ranked Indian Lakshya Sen moved up two places to No. 17 with 54,442 points, just ahead of China's Zhenxiang Wang, who jumped five spots to 18. HS Prannoy also climbed two places to reach world No. 33 with 40,336 points. In women's singles, 17-year-old Unnati Hooda rose four spots to a career-best No. 31 after her landmark pre-quarterfinal win over double Olympic medallist PV Sindhu last week. The Haryana shuttler stunned Sindhu 21-16, 19-21, 21-13 in a gruelling hour-and-13-minute battle to reach the quarterfinals, where she lost to third seed Akane Yamaguchi of Japan. Sindhu, meanwhile, remained static at No. 15 and continues to be the highest-ranked Indian in women's singles. In women's doubles, India's top pair of Treesa Jolly and Gayatri Gopichand held steady at No. 11, while Tanisha Crasto and Ashwini Ponnappa moved up two spots to 45. Australia Create History, Become 1st Team In The World To...

Last Updated: Australia managed to secure five outright wins in a row against the West Indies to clean sweep the five-match T20I series. The Australia men's cricket team created history on Tuesday (July 29) by becoming the first team in the world to win a five-match T20I series against a Test-playing nation with a scoreline of 5-0. The 2021 T20 World Cup winners faced the West Indies in a five-match T20I series from July 21 to 29 and, under the leadership of Mitchell Marsh, won all five games. In the past on multiple occasions, teams have won bilateral T20I series against a Test-playing nation with a scoreline of 4-1, but no team before Australia managed to secure five outright wins in a 5-match T20I series against any Test-playing nation. DATE (IST) WINNER LOSER MARGIN POTM VENUE July 21 Australia West Indies 3 wickets Mitchell Owen Jamaica July 23 Australia West Indies 8 wickets Josh Inglis Jamaica July 26 Australia West Indies 6 wickets Tim David St. Kitts July 27 Australia West Indies 3 wickets Glenn Maxwell St. Kitts July 29 Australia West Indies 3 wickets Ben Dwarshuis St. Kitts The first-ever T20I match was played between New Zealand and Australia in Auckland on February 17, 2005, and the first-ever five-match T20I bilateral series was played between New Zealand and England in November 2019. In January-February 2020, India defeated New Zealand 5-0 in the five-match T20I series played in New Zealand, but in that series, India won the third and fourth T20Is in the super over. For Australia in the five-match T20I series against the West Indies, Tim David (37-ball century in 3rd T20I), Glenn Maxwell, Mitchell Owen (fifty on T20I debut), Josh Inglis, and Cameron Green impressed with their batting performances, and the likes of Ben Dwarshuis, Adam Zampa, and Nathan Ellis made headlines for their bowling performances. In the fifth and final T20I of the series played on Monday (Tuesday IST), the Aussies bowled the West Indies team out for 170 in 19.4 overs. Apart from Shimron Hetmyer (52 runs from 31 balls), other West Indies batters failed to do much with the bat, and three of them were sent back to the pavilion by Dwarshuis, who conceded 41 runs in his quota of four overs. For the visitors, apart from Dwarshuis, Ellis also picked up two wickets for 32 runs in 3.4 overs, and one West Indies batter each was dismissed by Aaron Hardie, Sean Abbott, Maxwell, and Zampa. In the 171-run chase, Owen top-scored for Mitchell Marsh & Co. He hammered 37 runs from just 17 balls after coming out to bat at No. 6, and Tim David added 30 runs from 12 balls to Australia's total of 173/7 in 17 overs. All-rounder Green, who won the Player of the Series award, also scored 32 runs from just 18 balls. view comments First Published: July 29, 2025, 13:03 IST Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's.
