Over 66,000 complaints of wildlife conflict since 2020, losses hit RM46.5mil
ISKANDAR PUTERI: A total of 66,825 human-wildlife conflict complaints with an estimated loss of RM46.5 million have been recorded from 2020 to last year.
Natural Resources and Environmental Sustainability (NRES) Minister Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad said the significant increase involved animal species such as macaques, elephants, wild boars, Malayan tigers and tapirs.
He said in Johor alone, 7,996 complaints were recorded with a total loss of RM6.88 million.
"We need an integrated action, involving all parties to resolve this issue and a more thorough and effective approach to deal with the human-wildlife conflict.
"This issue is an urgent matter as we have seen several issues that have gone viral lately," he said at a press conference after launching the Johor State Human-Elephant Conflict Special Committee and a dialogue session with the Minister of NRES, here today.
Also present was the state Health and Environment Committee chairman, Ling Tian Soon.
Nik Nazmi said the ministry had implemented various efforts to address human-wildlife conflict, especially elephants.
He said this included preserving the Central Forest Spine and increasing protected areas under the Ecological Fiscal Transfer (EFT) for Biodiversity Conservation.
"When the government introduced EFT, we saw an increase in protected areas in the sea and on land, (to date) with a total area of 300,000ha.
"Of that total, 90,000ha involve land, of which 14,000ha have been gazetted as Permanent Forest Reserves," he said.
Earlier, Nik Nazmi welcomed the efforts of the Johor state government, which took proactive steps to establish a committee to coordinate actions to manage elephant-human conflict in the state in an integrated and systematic manner.
He said the strategic move should be used as an example for other states to increase the effectiveness of efforts to address human-wildlife conflict.

No urgency for cabinet reshuffle, says PM Anwar
KUALA LUMPUR: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim said there is no urgency to carry out a Cabinet reshuffle at this time. He said the government remains functional despite the recent resignations of two ministers. 'There is no urgency for a reshuffle now. Two ministers have resigned, (and) we're giving them time to reflect on what they want to do. 'Now they are on leave. I already approved their leave. I don't think we should preempt,' he told reporters at the Kuala Lumpur International Book Fair 2025 (PBAKL 2025) at Kuala Lumpur World Trade Centre here today. KOTA BARU, June 1 — Perikatan Nasional (PN) reportedly has no intention of inviting neither former PKR leaders Datuk Seri Rafizi Ramli and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad, nor ex-Umno member Datuk Seri Tengku Zafrul Abdul Aziz, to join the coalition. Utusan Malaysia cited its chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan saying that while the Oppositing coalition is open to cooperation in Parliament, it is not actively seeking their membership. 'If they want to join PN, that's up to them,' he was quoted saying here. 'However, Rafizi and Nik Nazmi would be subject to the issue of party-hopping.' Takiyuddin also criticised Tengku Zafrul's decision to leave Umno and align himself with PKR, calling the move 'unprincipled'. Rafizi and Nik Nazmi recently stepped down from their ministerial posts following defeats in the recent PKR party elections. They are currently on gardening leave. Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has said that no Cabinet reshuffle will happen while they are away. Meanwhile, Umno Supreme Council member Tengku Zafrul announced that he is leaving the party to join PKR. The investment, trade and industry minister is also vacating his seat on the Umno Supreme Council as well as his position as its Kota Raja division chief. All three of them have never declared their intention to join PN.
