Northern Ireland hero Stuart Dallas on the legendary manager who changed his life ‘on and off the pitch'

Leeds United hero Stuart Dallas is confident his old team can upset the odds and avoid relegation from the Premier League.
German manager Daniel Farke guided the Whites to the Championship title this season, however most bookmakers consider Leeds favourites for relegation alongside fellow top-flight new boys Burnley and Sunderland.

Pep Guardiola gives Rayan Cherki verdict after 'embarrassing' Man City debut

Pep Guardiola gave Rayan Cherki the benefit of the doubt after his tame Manchester City debut in the Club World Cup. Cherki completed his move to the Etihad earlier this month for a reported fee of £34million after a thrilling campaign in France with Lyon. He played for the first time in City blue on Wednesday evening against Moroccan outfit Wydad Casablanca in the revamped tournament taking place across the US this month. Phil Foden opened the scoring in the opening minutes with Cherki starting the game in Philadelphia. 'The opening half largely passed the Frenchman by, however, struggling to impose himself while occupying the no8 position ahead of fellow summer signing Tijjani Reijnders. Tasked with feeding Savinho, Jeremie Doku and Omar Marmoush in the City attack, Cherki struggled to find space to work his magic, pressed into errors by the opposition. The France international managed just 22 touches of the ball during his time on the pitch, losing it 10 times – more than any other City player – before he was replaced by Erling Haaland on the hour mark. Cherki announced himself in style this week by vowing to 'kill' Manchester United when City and their neighbours collide in the new Premier League season – with his meek debut mocked by rival supporters on social media. 'Cherki you should be embarrassed with this performance,' one fan wrote with another who was left unimpressed commenting: 'Cherki stinker and wrecked after 60 minutes on his debut.' One more sympathetic observer noted: 'Cherki just overdoing it tbh which is v common for a debut. It'll come.' Cherki, and fellow new arrival Reijnders, will both be tasked with filling the void left by Kevin de Bruyne who has signed for Napoli after a decade in Manchester.' Speaking after the match, Guardiola admitted de Bruyne will be 'difficult to replace' but pointed out Cherki's qualities despite failing to catch the eye 'in very tough conditions' on his debut. 'Of course, Kevin is difficult to replace, we know that,' Guardiola said in his post-match press conference. More Trending 'For the quality that he has, there is no doubt about that. But at the same time, the club decided on Rayan, he has incredible skills close to the box, an incredible vision and pass, he has many, many things. '[Today] was just the first game in very tough conditions but I am really pleased that he is here.' Guardiola added in an interview with DAZN: 'Tijjani [Reijnders] played very well, Rayan [Cherki] had good moments. Everyone has to get to know us and see what happens.' Alderson puts pen to paper for Flyers

London-born Mason Alderson has become Fife Flyers second signing under the new regime at The Fife Ice Arena. The British forward comes to the Kingdom following a two year, two-way stint between National Ice Hockey League side Solway Sharks and Elite League Champions, Belfast Giants. He has logged three appearances for Giants. The 23-year-old registered more than a point a game icing for Sharks last term, registering 21 goals and 28 assists in 43 appearances for the Dumfries side. And 6ft 3in Alderson said he is excited to be joining the Flyers. The player added: 'From what I've heard, it's a great organisation with a passionate fan base and a rich hockey history. I just can't wait to get started and play in front of the Flyers faithful.' He joins highly-rated netminder, Shane Owen, in the line-up and he started his career playing junior hockey between Romford, Guildford and Chelmsford. He then moved to North America, joining the National Collegiate Development Conference (NCDC) side Islanders Hockey Club ahead of the 2018/19 season. Alderson went on to represent Berwick Academy, Hoosac School, Wilkes-Barre/Scranton Knights and Castleton University before making the switch back to Britain. The Great Britain under-18 and under-20 player has accumulated 28 points in 20 appearances for his country. Included in those statistics are impressive numbers in 2018 when he was part of the under-18 Championship, Division II, Group A, winning side during the International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) World tournament in Estonia. He led the team in scoring with nine points (six goals and three assists) in five games and he was voted the tournament's best forward. Alderson was then named Great Britain's captain at the 2019 IIHF World under-18 Championship, Division I, Group B, tournament in Hungary. Max Birbraer, Flyers' president and general manager, said: 'When we heard Mason was still available we made an immediate move as it's absolutely vital for us to start building a core of British players and re-establishing ourselves as a balanced group. 'Mason is a young, talented, hard-nosed player who is an absolute pain in the opposition's back side. He fits our team template perfectly.' PICTURE: Alderson (right) in action for Belfast v Fife. Benjamin Sesko's agent moves to 'clarify a few things' amid Arsenal 'agreement'

Slovenia and RB Leipzig striker Benjamin Sesko is one of the most in-demand strikers this summer and his agent has spoken about the future of the Arsenal-linked frontman Benjamin Sesko's agent Elvis Basanovic has denied putting any pressure on RB Leipzig to lower their asking price for the striker. Sesko is understood to have agreed personal terms with Premier League side Arsenal, but the Gunners still have work to do. Leipzig are prepared to sell Sesko after missing out on Champions League qualification, but only if they receive a hefty fee - thought to be north of £60million. Basanovic believes all will become clear in due course, but moved to "clarify" the situation and insisted he wouldn't push for a lower fee out of respect for the Bundesliga side. ‌ 'This is far from truth!" he told Givemesport when asked about rumours of leaning on Leipzig over their asking price "We respect RB Leipzig and I am 100% convinced RB Leipzig will also respect our decision for the next step when we decide to do it." ‌ He addedL "Even if there may be - or will be - a strong desire of the player to move to a certain club, we will never force or blackmail RB Leipzig. I believe this is not the right way, because the way you actually exit from the club shows your values. Values that you are bringing into a new club. "I can understand in very big transfers, there are a lot of different interests but no matter what, I believe in football world should be more respect. So that's why we do things in the right way or we don't do them. It's very simple, even maybe in the media it looks very complicated." Sesko scored 21 goals in all competitions for Leipzig last season, with 13 of those coming in the Bundesliga. That was enough for him to finish the season as his team's top scorer, but a late-season collapse saw their European hopes go up in smoke. With five games to go, Leipzig sat in the fourth and final Champions League qualification place. They won none of those last five, though, and that saw them miss out on European qualification altogether. Sesko was linked with an Arsenal switch in the summer of 2024 as well, only to instead sign a new contract at his current club. That deal runs until 2029, though he could yet leave sooner. ‌ "We have a team with great potential and a balanced mix of young and experienced players. I'm really looking forward to taking the next steps with this team," Sesko said when his extension was confirmed. "We've already achieved a lot in my first season and often shown the amount of quality and outstanding football we can bring to the pitch. But there's still a lot more to be done and that's now our common goal." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
