The woman scientist, a 64-year-old resident of Erandwane in the city, had made three transfers between Dec 19 and 26, to send the Rs 1.82 crore. This sum, officials said, was broken down by fraudsters into smaller amounts and sent to many more bank accounts. Police began their hunt for a money trail soon after the case was filed on Jan 1 this year."As part of the money trail, we discovered over 100 bank accounts with money still in them. After freezing these accounts, we managed to retrieve the cash. And last week, after permission from court, we returned Rs 40 lakh to the scientist," said inspector Yashwant Nikam of the Cyber Police Station.Nikam said the scientist, a retiree, spent four days at home under digital arrest. "She was only allowed to step out to go to the bank, from where she made the money transfer. The suspects claimed they were from Mumbai cyber police and had threatened her, claiming her Aadhaar and SIM cards had been used in 12 cheating cases. They made her sit in front of her laptop and told her to transfer the money, to 'settle' the 12 cases," Nikam said.About the investigation, the inspector said sleuths from Pune cyber police used certain software to uncover layer after layer of bank transfers made by the fraudsters. "We started with the first three bank accounts that were given to us by the scientist. The software gave us details of the accounts and we then wrote to the bank, asking it to freeze all the suspicious accounts that were allegedly used by the fraudsters. This way, we managed to get more than 100 accounts frozen, all part of the suspected money trail," Nikam said, adding that search was underway for more of the scientist's money."We are still tracking these bank accounts. Another Rs 5 lakh will be handed over to the victim in the next few weeks," Nikam said. The cash recovery in the scientist's digital arrest case was reported days before another development on Tuesday evening, when cops investigating online share fraud managed to return Rs 51 lakh to a central govt employee from Lohegaon. Police said the victim had lost Rs 85 lakh in total to fraudsters last April. In this case too, more than 200 bank accounts were frozen after cops discovered a money trail, officials said.

SC junks plea of conman Sukeshs wife for expeditious bail hearing

Last Updated: New Delhi, Jun 12 (PTI) The Supreme Court has rejected the plea of Leena Paulose, wife of alleged conman Sukesh Chandrashekar, in a Rs 200 crore extortion case for an expeditious hearing of her bail plea in Delhi High Court. A bench comprising Justices Prashant Kumar Mishra and Manmohan observed her bail application was pending before the Delhi High Court and said, 'Considering that the bail petition is partly heard before the high court and is now posted for further arguments on July 2, 2025, we are not inclined to entertain this special leave petition. The special leave petition is, accordingly, dismissed." The top court on Wednesday added, 'It is expected that the High Court shall dispose the bail petition pending before it at the earliest and in accordance with law." Paulose moved the top court against a May 19 order of the high court, which posted her plea in July. Delhi Police has booked Chandrashekar for allegedly duping the wives of former promoters of Ranbaxy Shivinder Singh and Malvinder Singh of Rs 200 crore. Several separate investigations against him in the country are currently underway. Chandrasekhar and Paulose, who are also facing proceedings in a money laundering case of the Enforcement Directorate, were arrested by Delhi Police in the extortion case. The police have also invoked the Maharashtra Control of Organised Crime Act (MCOCA) in the case. First Published: June 12, 2025, 17:00 IST

Three Naxalites with ₹19 lakh bounty surrender in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur

Three Naxals, including two women -- carrying a collective cash reward of Rs 19 lakh on their heads -- have surrendered in Chhattisgarh's Narayanpur district, citing disillusionment with "hollow" Maoist ideology and exploitation of tribals, police said on Thursday. One of the Naxals, identified as Bhima alias Dinesh Podiam (40), turned himself in on Wednesday, while the two women cadres, Sukli Korram alias Sapna and Devli Mandavi (22), surrendered on Tuesday before authorities, an official said. The trio surrendered before senior police and CRPF officials in Narayanpur citing disillusionment with "hollow" and "inhuman" Maoist ideology, exploitation of innocent tribals by senior cadres and increasing influence of security forces in the Bastar region, he said. While Bhima, who was active as a company party member in east Bastar division of Maoists, carried a reward of Rs 10 lakh, Sukli, a platoon party committee member, and Devli, a janmilitia member, were carrying bounty of Rs 8 lakh and Rs 1 lakh, respectively, the official informed. The women cadres were active in Abhujmad and Partapaur (Kanker) areas, he said. "The Narayanpur police, Indo-Tibetan Border Police (ITBP) and Border Security Force (BSF) have played a crucial role in their surrender. The development has caused a huge loss to the top Maoist cadres. The dream of a Naxal-free Abhujmaad (once a Maoist stronghold) through 'Maad bacaho abhiyaan' (save Maad drive) is taking real shape," Narayanpur Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP) Prabhat Kumar said. All the surrendered Naxalites were provided instant assistance of Rs 50,000 each and they will be rehabilitated as per the government's policy, he added. Multiple benefits included in the government's new rehabilitation policy are persuading Naxalites to quit the outlawed movement, said the SSP. "Time has come for all Naxalite brothers and sisters to come out of the misleading ideology of outsiders. Now is the time to hand over 'Maad' back to its original residents where they can live a normal life without any fear," Kumar emphasised. With these surrenders, a total of 104 Naxalites have quit the armed movement led by the outlawed CPI (Maoist) so far this year in Narayanpur district. Last year, 792 Naxalites had surrendered in the Bastar region comprising seven districts, including Narayanpur.
