Bushwalkers rescued after enduring freezing night near Mt Kosciuszko

Two bushwalkers have endured a freezing night in the Kosciuszko National Park before being rescued in the early hours of Sunday morning. Emergency services were called to the Kosciuszko Walking Trail, below Mt Carruthers, about 3km from Mt Kosciuszko, at about 7.30am on Saturday following reports a 28-year-old woman and a 31-year-old man were trapped in blizzard conditions. Personnel from several agencies were mobilised and by shortly after midday Saturday had advanced to just over a kilometre from the bushwalkers before being forced to retreat. Trained alpine officers from NSW Police and the SES reached the bushwalkers on foot by 10.40pm while others established a campsite. They arrived at the campsite at about 12.25am on Sunday where they remained due to rising water levels in the Snowy River, heavy snowfall and strong winds. The hikers were extracted uninjured at about 4am Sunday. 'This was a great example of multi-agency teamwork and resilience in extreme conditions,' Acting Inspector Andrew Woods of the Monaro Police District said. 'As we move into the snow season, it's vital that Kosciuszko National Park users are properly prepared before venturing into alpine regions. It's highly recommended that park users monitor weather forecasts closely and continually as conditions change quickly.
