'There was no escape from the sun...' Scarlett Johansson recalls searing Malta heat on Jurassic World Rebirth shoot
Scarlett Johansson says it was "brutal" filming 'Jurassic World Rebirth' in the scorching heat of Malta.
The 40-year-old star plays the role of Zora Bennett in the latest movie in the 'Jurassic Park' franchise and admits that it was very difficult shooting watery scenes at the height of the Mediterranean summer.
Scarlett told Empire magazine: "There was no escape from the sun.
"It was just baking every day. And you're on this rig, 30 feet in the air or whatever it is, and it's moving up and down and sideways, and there's all this water being shot out of these cannons towards you. It was brutal.
"To do it one day would be hard. But to do it continuously for, like, six weeks or whatever..."
The movie's director Gareth Edwards admits that he did feel sympathy for his cast as they made the flick in gruelling conditions.
The 'Rogue One: A Star Wars Story' filmmaker recalled: "At the end of each day, I'd try and reassure them that tomorrow was going to be easier because of this reason.
"And then the next day would be even harder for either precisely the same reason, or a brand-new other reason. After a while, they just stopped believing me."
Edwards has hinted that 'Jurassic World Rebirth', which will be released in cinemas in July, will be darker in tone than previous movies and suggested that it is a "horror film".
The director said: "It's really a horror film.
"It's the sort of horror you enjoy, rather than stuff that will traumatise you forever. Like the way people enjoy fairground rides. But it's full-on darkness, right?"
Edwards has long been a fan of the 'Jurassic Park' franchise after watching the original movie in 1993 at the age of 18 and was daunted by the prospect of guiding the film's iconic director Steven Spielberg – who serves as an executive producer on 'Jurassic World Rebirth' – around the set.
The 49-year-old filmmaker said: "The only thing I can compare it to is having to show George Lucas around the set of a 'Star Wars' film.
"I definitely believe I am in the Matrix and I chose 'film director' as my simulation, because this shouldn't really happen."
The flick feature a new set of characters, with Mahershala Ali and Jonathan Bailey both appearing in the movie, and screenwriter David Koepp revealed that it was an easy decision to launch a fresh start for the franchise.
The scribe said: "We decided early on that, because the first and second trilogies have concluded their stories, let's not restrict ourselves in any way – let's have all-new characters in an all-new location."

28 Years Later director Danny Boyle addresses Cillian Murphy's absence
'28 Years Later' director Danny Boyle has teased "we don't know what's happened" to Cillian Murphy's Jim by the events of the movie. After starring in 2002's '28 Days Later' as protagonist Jim, the future of Murphy's character was left undecided alongside fellow survivor Selena – as portrayed by Naomie Harris – and now Boyle, 68, has insisted the fate of Jim and Selena is still unknown by the events of the sequel '28 Years Later'. Speaking at a fan event in New York City about '28 Years Later', the filmmaker said: "So, it's independent from the first film, but it's still the same apocalypse 28 years later as it was for Cillian Murphy in the first film and Naomie Harris." Even so, the filmmaker insisted the two new protagonists in '28 Years Later', as played by Aaron Taylor-Johnson and Jodie Comer, were "more than worthy stand-ins" for Murphy's Jim and Harris' Selena. He continued: "But this is 28 years later, and we don't know what's happened to them [Jim and Selena]. I'm not allowed to tell you, but these two are more than worthy stand-ins." Following '28 Days Later', the story was continued in the 2007 sequel '28 Weeks Later', which didn't feature Murphy's Jim and was directed by Juan Carlos Fresnadillo instead of Boyle. '28 Years Later' follows Jamie (Taylor-Johnson) and Isla (Comer) as they leave their tight-knit island community after their 12-year-old son Spike (Alfie Williams) embarks on a coming-of-age journey beyond the safety of the island, forcing the family to come face-to-face with the Rage Virus. '28 Years Later' producer Andrew Macdonald previously insisted Murphy's Jim wouldn't feature in the blockbuster, though the actor was still involved in the project as an executive producer. Macdonald told Empire: "This, we wanted him to be involved and he wanted to be involved. He is not in the first film, but I'm hoping there will be some Jim somewhere along the line. "He's involved at the moment as an executive producer, and I would hope we can work with him in some way in the future in the trilogy." After '28 Years Later' – which hits screens on 20 June 2025 - Boyle and writer Alex Garland are set to return for the follow-up '28 Years Later Part II: The Bone Temple' in January 2026, and its sequel. Garland explained it felt like the "natural form" of '28 Years Later' was a trilogy. He said: "This is very narratively ambitious. Danny and I understood that. 'We tried to condense it, but its natural form felt like a trilogy." Boyle added the '28 Years Later' films would be a "wholly different approach" to what had already been seen before in the series with '28 Days Later' and '28 Weeks Later'. The director said: "It was about what that 28 years gives you." Ahead of '28 Years Later's theatrical release, Boyle urged fans to "support the apocalypse", as the completion of the horror trilogy hinged on the performance of the first two entries. Speaking at CinemaCon in Las Vegas, he said: "We've finished the first film, we've shot the second, however, we don't have finance for the third yet. "[Sony Pictures Chairman/CEO Tom Rothman] seems like a nice guy, but he hasn't given us the finance for the third, and that's where [exhibition] comes in. "So please, do us proud in your cinemas on June the 20th and support the continuing apocalypse."

James Cameron will take Avatar break to work on The Devils adaptation
James Cameron will take a break from 'Avatar' to work on an adaptation of 'The Devils'. The 70-year-old filmmaker has confirmed his own production company Lightstorm Entertainment has acquired the rights to author Joe Abercrombie's new novel, and they'll be writing the script together. He said in a statement on Facebook: "I've loved Joe's writing for years, cherishing each new read, throughout the epic cycle of the 'First Law' books, especially 'Best Served Cold' (LOVE IT!), and the 'Age of Madness' trilogy. 'But the freshness of the world and the characters in 'The Devils' finally got me off my butt to buy one of his books and partner with him to bring it to the screen. "I can't wait to dig into this as I wind down on 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. It will be a joyful new challenge for me to bring these indelible characters to life.' The third 'Avatar' film is set to be released in December this year, with a fourth and fifth instalment planned for 2029 and 2031 respectively. Cameron's next project will be 'The Devils', putting his stamp on the dark fantasy epic which focuses on a special force of monsters tasked to save Europe from flesh-eating elves. Author Abercrombie said: "I can't think of anyone better to bring this weird and wonderful monster of a book to the screen.' Cameron recently admitted he had too many "great ideas" packed into 2022's 'Avatar: The Way of Water' - which clocked in at three hours and 12 minutes - but he's gone even bigger with the upcoming 'Avatar: Fire and Ash'. He told Empire magazine: 'In a nutshell, we had too many great ideas packed into act one of movie 2. The [film] was moving like a bullet train, and we weren't drilling down enough on character. So I said, 'Guys, we've got to split it.' 'Movie 3 will actually be a little bit longer than movie 2.' His co-writer Amanda Silver, who wrote the script with Cameron and Rick Jaffa, stressed the second and third movies are separate films because "the characters needed to breathe". She said: 'These movies are a lot more than just propulsive plot and gorgeous spectacle. I mean, these are real characters.' The director previously declared he feels "pretty good" about the third movie after giving "selected people" an advance screening.
