Italy's manufacturing sector downturn deepens in March, PMI shows
ROME, April 1 (Reuters) - Italy's long-running manufacturing contraction deepened in March, with production volumes falling at the fastest rate in four months, a survey showed on Tuesday.
The HCOB Purchasing Managers' Index (PMI) for manufacturing fell to 46.6 in March from 47.4 in February, marking the 12th consecutive month below the 50.0 threshold that separates growth from contraction.
A Reuters survey of eight analysts had pointed to a reading of 48.0.
New orders declined at the same steep rate as the month before, with a reading of 44.8, while employment also contracted for the sixth month running.
"Italy's manufacturing sector remains in the grip of crisis, showing no signs of improvement in March," said HCOB economist Jonas Feldhusen.
"All manufacturing sub-sectors are grappling with the ongoing crisis," he added.
National statistics bureau ISTAT said last week that morale among Italian businesses and consumers slumped in March, casting a shadow over already weak growth prospects for the euro zone's third-largest economy.
Italian gross domestic product increased by 0.7% in each of the last two years, and most analysts forecast a similar modest growth rate in 2025.

Uber brings helicopter taxis to the Amalfi Coast
Uber has announced that customers will be able to book helicopters in minutes in Italy this summer to beat crowds. From 26 July to 23 August, travellers on Italy's Amalfi Coast can reserve a private Uber Copter to take them between Sorrento and Capri using the Uber app for €250 (around £184) per head. The dual-pilot helicopter service will operate every Saturday and Sunday with a 9am departure from Sorrento and 5pm return from Capri. The journey includes door-to-door transportation to and from the helipad and is available for groups of up to six passengers. The American transport company, best known for its taxis, is also launching the Uber Boat in Italy with private charters for up to 12 people available between 26 July until 24 August. Travellers will sail from Sorrento Marina on Italian Gozzo 35 boats, with ample opportunity to soak in the coastline's most breathtaking spots on the four-hour trip. Each trip comes with its own personal skipper and complimentary snacks and beverages. This summer is set to be the southern coastline's busiest on record following the launch of international flights at Salerno Airport. The Amalfi Coast, famed for its pastel-coloured fishing villages and excellent food, is one of Italy's most popular tourist spots, attracting around five million tourists a year. Very narrow roads link the most popular towns on the coastline meaning travellers face traffic bottlenecks and competition over seasonal ferries. Uber said it is responding to the rise in demand from international customers for Uber's mobility services, which increased by up to 25 per cent last summer in places like Rome, Lake Como and the Amalfi Coast. It added that more than 400,000 international customers used the Uber app in Italy during the holiday period in 2024. Italy is fast becoming one of our most popular tourist destinations, with travellers turning to the Uber app to help make their holiday travel stress-free. Customers are required to book at least 48 in advance via the Uber Reserve from anywhere in Italy beginning on 25 June for both the Uber Copter and Uber Boat. The availability of Uber Copter and Uber Boat is expected to be limited and subject to weather conditions.

Sources have told Mirror Football that since arriving at the club in March, Berta has been working extremely hard on a number of key agreements as Arsenal want to keep their house in order and retain the services of their most-prized assets. Both Bukayo Saka and William Saliba, who have two years left to run on their current deals, have held positive dialogue with Arsenal over fresh terms and want to stay at the club. Saliba has been courted by Real Madrid but Mikel Arteta's indispensable duo have already spoken publicly about their desire to remain in north London in a major boost for the Spaniard. Arsenal are relaxed about the process and while there's an understanding that while negotiations can take time, they maintain confidence that agreements will be struck in due course. Academy graduates Ethan Nwaneri and Myles Lewis-Skelly are also in line for new deals which would also include lucrative pay-rises. Their current contracts are due to expire in the summer of 2026 but there is optimism agreements for both players are now in sight following two stellar breakthrough seasons at the Emirates. Conversations with Lewis-Skelly began prior to Berta's arrival while one of the Italian's first acts as Arsenal sporting director was to approach the representatives of Nwaneri to propose formal contract discussions, which are advancing. Negotiations also remain ongoing with both Thomas Partey, who is currently set to become a free agent at the end of the month, and winger Leandro Trossard. Arsenal made Partey what they considered to be a competitive offer around 10 days ago but at this moment in time, there is still no agreement between the parties and the situation remains open. The Ghanaian midfielder, who turns 32 next Friday and has also attracted interest from Barcelona, wants to stay with the Gunners and is understood to be settled in north London. However, Partey is said to be cautious that his next contract could potentially represent his last big deal and his agents want to see his importance to the team reflected within the terms proposed. All parties want to find a quick resolution as Partey and his agent Jose Daniel Jimenez Pozanco, who has been handling talks with Arsenal, are currently scheduled to be in Ghana from June 10 to June 13 for the second edition of the 'Thomas Partey tournament' where scouts from Europe will cast an eye over young local talent. Additionally, Partey is due to appear at the All Star Festival in Accra, Ghana on June 18. Meanwhile, Trossard remains in line to extend his stay with Arsenal having joined the club from Brighton in January 2023. He was the subject of a verbal offer from Saudi Pro League side Al-Ittihad last September and sources close to Trossard have confirmed there is still interest from the Middle East but to date, there have been no concrete offers this summer and the 30-year-old Belgian's priority is to continue with the Gunners. Tripoli Chamber holds virtual meetings to hasten ISO certification for Libyan fish exports to EU
The Tripoli Chamber of Commerce held virtual meetings yesterday devoted to Libya obtaining ISO certificates to allow the export of marine products directly to the European Union. Tripoli Chamber said this comes within the framework of its efforts exerted to support the export of marine products to global markets. The virtual meetings were led for the Chamber by its Chairman Anwar Abu Sitta, with the Italian interlocutor of the WestMed Blue Economy Initiative of the European Union and the 5+5 Group, Leonardo Manzari, where the meeting focused on marine activities, fisheries and marine economy. The meeting also included Masouda Abu Arousha, the national interlocutor of WestMed Organization of the European Union, and in the presence of Ali Al-Shaqrouni, Chairman of the Libyan Maritime Bloc, and Zakaria Franca, Advisor to the Libyan Italian Chamber of Commerce. The meeting was devoted to how Libya obtains ISO certificates, issued by the European Union, to allow the export of marine products directly to the European Union countries and also on the extent of the participation of Libyan companies in the projects proposed by the European Union for human development and training, and how to support small and medium enterprises for entrepreneurs specialized in this sector. Communication with concerned government agencies to be intensified The meeting agreed to intensify communication with the concerned government agencies to facilitate the process of implementing international standards to complete the conditions required by the European Union to obtain the ISO certificate that allows the export of Libyan products to Europe. This would open the way for local exporters to export to the EU directly by legal means, which contributes to raising the value and development of this vital sector to diversify the level of national income. It was noted that ISO is an international certificate of standardization that sets global standards for various industries and sectors. ISO certifications include quality, safety, efficiency, and environmental standards. Upon obtaining ISO certification, it is recognized that an individual or organization adheres to specific standards that ensure the quality of work and services.
