VDA to build ramp for Divyang & elderly at Ravidas ghat in Kashi

Time of India7 days ago
Varanasi: The Varanasi Development Authority is set to install a ramp at Ravidas ghat, making it easier for elderly and Divyang individuals (people with disabilities) to board cruise rides on the Ganga river.
Currently, the steep steps pose a significant challenge for these individuals, often forcing them to abandon their plans for a cruise ride. With the new ramp, accessibility and comfort will be greatly improved.
VDA vice-chairman Pulkit Garg said, "We have finalised a proposal to construct a ramp at Ravidas ghat to facilitate people with disabilities and the elderly. Necessary approval has been obtained from the infrastructure fund for this project, which is estimated to cost around Rs 50 lakh.
The work will be carried out by inviting e-tenders as per regulations."
The new ramp will soon enable people with disabilities and the elderly to comfortably board cruise rides on the Ganga river, allowing them to participate in sightseeing, Ganga aarti viewing, and other religious activities. The ramp will provide direct access from the ghat to the boats, bridging a substantial height difference between the entrance point at Ravidas Park and the lowest step. This development is particularly noteworthy as Varanasi is set to launch a 50-seat air-conditioned electric boat for tourists at Ravidas ghat, enhancing the city's religious tourism infrastructure.
The proposed ramp is being designed according to accessibility standards for people with disabilities, with a slope ratio of 1:12. Approximately 150 metres long, the ramp will be smooth, safe, and durable.

Guided tour of Delhi on AC e-buses likely from Sept

New Delhi: Delhi govt is going to expand its city tourism services by engaging two electric buses from Delhi Transport Corporation . Officials said that these buses would start from the Delhi Tourism's office at Baba Kharak Singh Marg and cover the city's popular tourist spots along with some new landmarks before dropping the passengers back from where it started. Delhi Tourism and Transportation Development Corporation has entered into an agreement with DTC to hire air-conditioned electric buses. "We hope to start the service by Sept 1 after getting the buses branded in special wrapping promoting Delhi as a tourist destination, and training of guides," said a DTTDC official. The buses will cover several destinations, including Connaught Place, Police Memorial, historical monuments, Pradhanmantri Sangrahalaya and Dilli Haat. The buses will stop at certain destinations for a fixed time to allow the tourists to take a quick round. The proposed ticket price is Rs 500 for adults and Rs 300 for children aged between 6 and 12. Officials said that each bus would have a seating capacity of 32 passengers. There are also plans to introduce an audio translation service for which headsets with multiple language options will be provided. DTTDC planned to start six theme-based tours covering Delhi's heritage monuments, food streets, markets, shopping malls and museums before the G20 Summit in Sept 2023. The plan, however, was shelved considering that not many tourists may be interested in theme-based circuits and would rather prefer one consolidated tour covering all important destinations. A senior DTTDC official said that the department might consider expanding the service and engaging more buses to run on different circuits after evaluating the response to the soon-to-start city tours. Depending on the number of tourists booking for a city tour or for a trip outside Delhi, DTTDC provides cars as well as bigger vehicles on rent.

Himachal deputy CM launches digital systems to modernise HRTC operations

Shimla: Himachal Pradesh deputy chief minister Mukesh Agnihotri on Tuesday launched four new information technology-based systems developed by Himachal Road Transport Corporation (HRTC) in collaboration with the department of digital technologies and governance. These include an online travel pass system enabling school and college students, govt employees, and traders to apply online for concessional passes, pay fees digitally, and receive radio frequency identification (RFID)-based smart cards. A digital bus inspection scheduling system was also introduced to improve monitoring of staff performance and ensure timely checks, with schedules now being transmitted via mobile SMS. A global positioning system (GPS)-based bus tracking system was initiated for 82 buses in Shimla, which would later be extended to the entire fleet of HRTC buses to ensure better real-time monitoring. A new platform, 'Him Access HRTC system' was also launched, allowing over 9,000 employees to access their personal and salary details online. Agnihotri said that to strengthen infrastructure, it was decided that Rs 7 crore would be spent on the repair and maintenance of various bus stands across the state, along with the installation of CCTV cameras at all bus terminals for public safety. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Switch to UnionBank Rewards Card UnionBank Credit Card Apply Now Undo A modern bus stand facility would also be constructed at Mandi Bharari in Bilaspur district to cater to increasing commuter traffic. A loyalty programme would also provide cashback benefits based on monthly travel. To attract more passengers, the fare of super luxury buses would be reduced by 15%, allowing cardholders to avail up to a 20% discount along with loyalty rewards. Agnihotri stated that to attract more tourists and increase revenue, 'Tourist Day Circuits' would be introduced, connecting major religious and tourist spots around Shimla. Approval was also given to new revenue measures such as implementing an advertisement policy on HRTC tickets, website, and app, and piloting the operation of retail fuel outlets at two to three locations using HRTC's own fuel pumps. A dhaba policy would also be put in place to empanel eateries along bus routes with a focus on hygiene and commuter convenience, he added. MSID:: 122976227 413 |

Insurance co told to pay Rs 1.9L for cancelled flight

Ghaziabad: Over two years after city resident Sushil Kaul and his wife Sunita Kaul jointly filed an application, District Consumer Disputes Redressal Commission (DCDRC) has directed an insurance company offering international travel insurance to pay the entire airfare to them after Air Canada cancelled its flight in 2022. DCDRC on Wednesday directed the insurance company — Care Health Insurance Limited — to pay Rs 1.9 lakh for the ticket price of $2337 calculated at Rs 82 per dollar within 45 days of the judgment, failing which the consumer would be entitled to recover the amount with an annual interest of 6% till the final payment is made. On May 31, 2023, Kaul and Sunita Kaul jointly filed the application before the commission seeking direction to the insurance company that rejected their claim despite having a valid insurance policy to cover international travel. The commission also asked the insurer to pay a compensation of Rs 5,000 to the traveller for deficiency in service under the Consumer Protection Act. Kaul informed the commission that he bought an insurance policy from M/s Care Health Insurance Limited after paying a premium of Rs 51,341 on June 10, 2022. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like My Brows Look Fuller Looking Now [See Results] NULASTIN Learn More Undo The policy was valid for 178 days to cover his US and Canada trip. Kaul said, "I booked two Air Canada tickets for July 18 for a flight from New Delhi to Montreal. The flight was scheduled to reach there at 6.20am (EST). I had the next flight for Ottawa from Montreal at 8.55am (EST). The flight left Delhi and reached Canada as per schedule, but on reaching there, I found an email from Air Canada informing about the cancellation of flight AC8001 meant for Ottawa. The airline later adjusted us for a later flight. " When he placed a claim for compensating the cancellation of the flight, he was paid $200 (Rs 16,400) by the insurance company, whereas the cost of the ticket was $2337 (Rs 1,91,634), Kaul said. Appearing before the commission, the insurance company said since the passenger was offered an alternate flight later in the day, the case was considered under the policy of flight rescheduling, accordingly, for a delay of 8 hours and 35 minutes. Maintenance for the said period at a rate of $200 was paid to the insured passenger. Having heard both sides, the commission concluded that the applicant placed on record the letter of flight cancellation issued by the airline. "The matter should not have been dealt with as a delayed or rescheduled flight as the flight AC8001 in which the traveller booked his ticket got cancelled and he has placed the letter of the airline as proof," the commission observed, declaring the insurer of committing deficiency in service.
