Durand Cup 2025: Namdhari End South United's Campaign With Comfortable Win
In an entertaining battle of debutants here on the lush green Kishore Bharati Krirangan (KBK) turf , two late second-half strikes by Bhupinder and Brazilian Cledson Dasilva, gave I-League side Namdhari Sports Academy an opening win in match 10 of the on-going 134th Durand Cup, over Bengaluru's South United FC (SUFC).
The result means SUFC end their debut Durand campaign with a solitary point in Group A after completing all their three matches. Namdhari will gain confidence and move to bigger battles ahead in their pursuit of qualification for the knockouts.
How Namdhari Beat South United?
South United taking the field in their traditional orange for the first time did not quite change their fortunes too much but they deliver yet another spirited performance.
Coach Kaja Bhadussa of SUFC even changed keeper Nishanth to give Sunil Singh a chance under the SUFC bar, as part of five changes made from their previous draw against the Indian Air Force. Although Sunil repaid the faith shown in full with a brilliant display, it was not going to be enough in the end.
The I-League side under gaffer Harpreet Singh with two foreigners in their line-up in Cledson upfront and Ghanian Lamine Moro at the heart of defence, were certainly the more experienced and organised side at this level and that shone through in the end.
Aatma Singh in the 10th minute had the first crack at goal from distance for Sunil to expertly tip it over the bar. It was going to be the first of many good saves that Sunil would make in the game. It was end to end football thereafter as the two sides deservedly went into the break with the deadlock yet to be broken.
Harpreet made two changes at the break, bringing in Dharampreet in attack and Akashdeep in defence, suggesting he wanted to make things happen. Dharampreet's injection in particular made a difference as Namdhari's wave of attacks increased.
Building up to the first goal, Lotjem was denied by Sunil in the 69th while Cledson missed a couple in quick succession, one of them again denied by Sunil.
Bhupinder's tireless runs from the right flank then finally brought dividends as he drove inside the box to cut back for Dharampreet. Rowan attempted to clear the shot headed for goal but only as far as Bhupinder still lurking around. The winger made no mistake with a powerful drive into the near post past Sunil's out stretched arms.
That gave Namdhari the confidence required and they upped the ante further. Six minutes later Amandeep played Bhupinder on the right and his cross was feebly cleared by Rowan yet again unfortunately, who otherwise had a good game. The loose ball fell to Cledson, who this time made no mistake to stab it in from close.
The win means both East Bengal FC and Namdhari now have three points with the former on top on goals scored. The Indian Air Force have one with two games to play, while SUFC have ended their campaign.

10-man Bagan ride on Colaco show against youthful Mohammedan SC
Kolkata: In the end, Liston Colaco's individual brilliance turned out to be too much and too good for Mohammedan SC's team game and youthful exuberance. The India winger scored two goals and created a beautiful assist for teammate Suhail Bhatt in inspiring a 10-man Mohun Bagan SG to a 3-1 win over Mohammedan SC at the Salt Lake Stadium on Thursday and launching the ISL champions' campaign in the Durand Cup on a perfect note. Colaco gave his team a deserved lead in the 23rd minute, beating Mohammedan SC goalkeeper Subhajit Bhattacharjee with a beautifully-executed free-kick. However, Lalengmawia Ralte 'Apuia's red card just before the break threatened to alter the script for Bagan. You Can Also Check: Kolkata AQI | Weather in Kolkata | Bank Holidays in Kolkata | Public Holidays in Kolkata Ashley Koli brought home the equalizer for Mohammedan SC in the 50th minute as Mehrajuddin Wadoo's youngsters briefly appeared to have taken control of the proceedings. But the imperious Colaco broke the trend with a stunning assist, releasing Suhail Bhat free inside the box with a sumptuous back-heel and Bhat made no mistake in restoring Bagan's lead in 62 minutes. Yet, Mohammedan SC — playing the entire the second half with an extra man —kept raiding the rival box with belief that they had in their youthful exuberance and Wadoo's strategy something to queer the pitch for the ISL champions. Bagan goalkeeper and captain Vishal Kaith even had to come up with a couple of crucial saves to keep his team's hopes alive. Eventually it was left for Colaco to put more gloss on the victory, earning and converting a penalty in the fifth minute of the stoppage time. Merely a week after beginning their pre-season training, stakes were heavy for Bagan, though. In absence of any foreigners and Spanish head coach Jose Molina, they were thrust into the season-opener knowing that any slip-up might jeopardize their chances in Asia's oldest knock-out football tournament. Assistant coach Bastab Roy was also wary of Mohammedan SC's youthful energy and fighting spirit despite going down 1-2 to Diamond Harbour FC in the Group B opener three days ago and highlighting their style of playing as a team. Still, Bagan entered the field carrying the favourites' tag with the likes of Colaco, Apuia, Asish Rai and newcomer full back Abhishek Singh at their disposal. Bagan went on the offensive right at the outset with Suhail missing a couple of sitters before Colaco drew a foul from Joseph Lalmuanawma just outside the box and sent the resultant freekick into the top corner of the net with a perfect execution. However, Apuia's aggression when he headbutted Tangva Ragui following a foul and drew a straight red card from referee Aditya Purkayastha came as something out of the syllabus for Bastab's gameplan. Mohammedan SC got the equalizer soon after the break, Kaith managing to block Lalthankima's strike from distance, only to see Koli snap up the rebound. But Colaco came to the team's rescue again, first with an assist that completely took the rival defence by surprise and Suhail managed to find the target on his second attempt after his first shot was blocked by the goalkeeper. Colaco came calling again, this time entering the box with menace and drawing a foul from defender Dinesh Meitei. Referee Aditya Purkayastha had no hesitation to point his finger towards the spot, as Dinesh and his Mohammedan SC teammates protested the official's decision. Colaco stepped up to beat Subhajit for the third time and seal the deal in style.

Bodoland outshine Morning Star
There was no dearth of support from the stands as home side Bodoland FC curved out a 2-1 victory over Karbi Anglong Morning Star FC — another club from the Assam hinterland — in their Durand Cup clash at SAI Stadium in Kokrajhar on Thursday. Having failed to make it out of the group stage in their debut season last year, Bodoland began their campaign at the 134th edition of the tournament with a win and three points that took them to the second spot on the Group D table, with the same points and goal difference but one goal behind leaders ITBP FT in goals scored. It was a scrappy start to the fixture between the two Assamese outfits. But the team from Karbi Anglong in Assam's Diphu brought the packed house at the venue to a standstill when it drew the first blood in the 25th minute. Joseph latched on to a defensive error from the hosts to slot the ball home and announce the arrival of another club from the northeast on the Indian scene. However, Bodoland struck back in the 37th minute when Gwgwmsar Gayary had a superb shot from inside the box that found the right of the net and bring the match on level terms. With the match locked at 1-1 at the end of the first half, both sides looked eager to press forward after the change of ends but it was Bodoland — the Kokrajhar outfit — who were able to capitalise on the chance created at both ends. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Brain tumor has left my son feeling miserable; please help! But the visitors, despite their constant and quality efforts to find an equaliser, had to endure their second defeat of the maiden campaign, the first against group leaders ITBP in the opener.
