KOTA BHARU - Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has given his assurance that the death of Form One student Zara Qairina Mahathir in Sabah will be investigated transparently without protecting anyone.
He said the case should not be taken lightly, especially as various allegations have emerged, including that the victim had fallen, been pushed, or bullied.
"Our child in Sabah has died; some say she fell, some say she was pushed, some say it was due to bullying. We do not take this lightly, and we do not want it to be turned into political fodder.
"Our instructions are clear - no compromise, regardless of whose child it is, whether the child of a minister or anyone else, I don't care,' he said at the Rancakkan Madani Kelantan Programme at USM Health Campus, Kubang Kerian, here today.
The Prime Minister said he had contacted Inspector-General of Police Datuk Seri Mohd Khalid Ismail, Attorney-General Tan Sri Mohd Dusuki Mokhtar and Home Minister Datuk Seri Saifuddin Nasution Ismail to ensure the investigation is carried out fairly.
"I asked whether there were any mistakes in the investigation into Zara Qairina's case. If there were, take action. This is a death. Regardless of whether it is the child of the poor or the rich, in the mountains, on land or at sea, we will pay attention because the investigation must be conducted transparently. I am saddened because she could have been my child or grandchild.
"Due to suspicions, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) has ordered the exhumation of the body for a second post-mortem," he said.
He said Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department director Datuk M. Kumar has also been instructed to go to Sabah to monitor the investigation to prevent any perception that certain parties are being protected.
"This is the Madani government; we will not protect murderers," he added. The death of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir has shocked the nation amid growing outrage over suspected bullying at her school in Papar, Sabah.
Today, Zara Qairina's body was exhumed to complete the investigation into the student's death following the AGC's directive yesterday.
Yesterday, the AGC, in a statement, said Zara Qairina's remains needed to be exhumed to enable a post-mortem to be carried out on the student's body.
The AGC is of the view that further investigation is necessary for the police to ensure all aspects of the case can be examined thoroughly.
Zara Qairina, 13, was pronounced dead at Queen Elizabeth I Hospital in Kota Kinabalu on July 17.
The student had been taken to the hospital after being found unconscious in a drain near the hostel of a religious school in Papar at 4am on July 16. - BERNAMA

Opposition MPs call for detailed explanation of discrepancies in Zara's case procedures
KUALA LUMPUR: Opposition MPs demand that the authorities provide a detailed explanation for why a post-mortem examination was not carried out immediately in the case of 13-year-old Zara Qairina Mahathir's death. Perikatan Nasional chief whip Datuk Seri Takiyuddin Hassan (PN-Kota Baru) questioned the police's procedure in the case. 'I want to ask the police, according to procedures... Whenever a person dies, a burial permit is required (before the body can be buried). "However, in a mysterious tragedy such as this, the police permitted the body to be buried without any post-mortem," he said, while debating the 13th Malaysia Plan, in the Dewan Rakyat on Tuesday (Aug 12). "I wish to emphasise that a post-mortem should be conducted without any request from any party, as this is standard procedure in sudden death or sudden death report cases," added the PAS MP. Takiyuddin said that the decision made by the Attorney-General's Chambers to return police investigation papers with instructions for them to complete the probe indicates that their investigation was incomplete. The PAS secretary-general then called for the Home and Education ministers to present a detailed report on the case to the Dewan Rakyat. On Aug 8, the Attorney General's Chambers (AGC) instructed the police to immediately exhume and conduct a post-mortem on the late Zara Qairina. This follows the completion of the analysis of the full preliminary report. On Aug 11, a federal police task force comprising nine personnel from the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department would take over the investigation into the death of Zara Qairina. The team, comprising both officers and rank-and-file personnel, has been deployed to Sabah. Datuk Seri Saifuddin Abdullah (PN-Indera Mahkota) questioned whether there should be a separate probe on the weaknesses before the takeover by the Bukit Aman. "There must be a conclusive probe to identify who is involved or has given orders, either directly or indirectly, to the police, and the type of punishment if there are any mistakes made," said Saifuddin. Datuk Seri Ronald Kiandee (PN-Beluran) also agreed, saying that there was a blatant disregard for the process and procedures involved in the case. "This has created a perception as if there is a cover-up. "The outcry made by the public must be considered," he said. Zara Qairina was pronounced dead at a hospital in Sabah on July 17, a day after she reportedly fell from the third floor of her school dormitory. Her tragic death went viral and sparked mass reactions on social media, which included widespread allegations that she was a victim of bullying.

PUTRAJAYA: Bangladesh has requested Malaysia's assistance in its post-uprising recovery efforts as the country stabilises after last year's student protests. Chief Adviser Dr Muhammad Yunus stated that Bangladesh is now on the right track towards progress. He thanked Malaysia and Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim for their support during the nation's difficult period. Speaking at a joint press conference with Anwar, Yunus noted that Anwar was the first foreign leader to visit Bangladesh after his return to office last year. Yunus described Anwar as a reliable ally, saying, 'It was a wonderful feeling to find a friend to come in time of need when we're desperately looking for support somewhere.' He added, 'We are happy to have that and we strengthen our resolve to making sure Bangladesh is moving in the right ways.' Since assuming leadership, Yunus said his government has worked to restore stability in the country. 'We are happy we restore order in the country, we restore the economy, the institutions and functions,' he said. He confirmed that Bangladesh is preparing for elections in February to establish a new government. 'Now we are ready for elections that will be called in coming February to create new government,' Yunus stated. He emphasised Bangladesh's need for international backing, saying, 'So we need a lot of support. We are looking to Malaysia's support, always.' During his meeting with Anwar, Yunus expressed optimism about strengthening bilateral and multilateral cooperation. Yunus, on a three-day official visit, also encouraged Malaysian businesses to invest in Bangladesh, calling it a land of 'tremendous opportunity.' He highlighted Bangladesh's request for Malaysia's assistance, as ASEAN Chair, in resolving Rohingya refugee issues. 'So we need all the help we can get. And Malaysia is a good friend,' Yunus added. Bangladesh thanks Malaysia for worker support and hospitality
PUTRAJAYA: Chief Adviser to the Government of Bangladesh Prof Dr Muhammad Yunus expressed gratitude for Malaysia's support and hospitality towards Bangladeshi workers. He highlighted how Malaysian employers treat Bangladeshi workers as friends and family, helping them improve their lives. Yunus noted that this positive treatment enables workers to support their families and educate their children back home. He thanked Malaysia for hosting Bangladeshi workers and hoped for continued opportunities for more to work and learn in the country. The Nobel Peace Prize laureate spoke during a joint press conference with Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim. Yunus emphasised the long-term mutual benefits of the cooperation between both nations. Human Resources Minister Steven Sim earlier stated that Bangladeshis form the largest group of foreign workers in Malaysia, numbering around 898,970. Prime Minister Anwar acknowledged the significant contributions of Bangladeshi workers to Malaysia's economic growth. He reaffirmed Malaysia's commitment to strengthening ties with Bangladesh through inclusive policies. Anwar highlighted the importance of Bangladesh as a key partner due to its workers' role in national development. He mentioned the Home and Human Resources Ministers' agreement on a multiple entry visa facility for workers. The facility allows Bangladeshi workers to visit their families without additional visa applications. The Home Ministry recently implemented the Multiple Entry Visa (MEV) facility effective from Aug 8. Workers with a valid Temporary Employment Visit Pass and Single Entry Visa are exempt from separate MEV applications. The MEV reflects Malaysia's dedication to ethical labour cooperation and stronger bilateral relations with Bangladesh. It also underscores Malaysia's commitment to protecting foreign workers' rights under labour laws and international standards. - Bernama
