Student allegedly hacked Western Sydney University to get discounted parking and alter academic results

The Guardian9 hours ago

A former Western Sydney University student allegedly waged a four-year hacking campaign on the institution which began as an attempt to secure discounted parking on campus and culminated in her threatening the sale of student information on the dark web.
The 27-year-old was arrested on Wednesday and charged with 20 offences including accessing or modifying restricted data on a computer, dishonestly obtaining financial advantage by deception, and unauthorised modification of data with intent to cause impairment.
Police allege the woman initially exploited the university's system's to get cheaper parking, but as her offending escalated, she allegedly altered her academic results and eventually threatened to sell confidential student data on the dark web.
'We're aware that there are a number of grievances … which were not resolved to their liking, and we believe that that's the driving factor behind the offending,' Det Acting Supt Jason Smith said on Thursday.

Police seized more than 100 gigabytes of data along with computers, servers and mobile devices in the raid on a unit at Kingswood in Sydney's west.
Since 2021, Western Sydney University has experienced a series of hacks involving unauthorised access, data exfiltration, system compromise and misuse of university infrastructure – including someone threatening the sale of student information on the dark web, police said.
Police said it was estimated hundreds of university staff and students were affected by these incidents.
The former electrical engineering student allegedly started holding the university to ransom from November 2024, eventually demanding $40,000 in cryptocurrency to stop her revealing sensitive data about staff and students.
Police had searched the student's residence in September 2023 before Wednesday's raid of her apartment resulted in her arrest and 21 fraud and cyber charges.
She was remanded in custody ahead of a court appearance in Parramatta on Friday morning.
Western Sydney University said the attacks had a significant impact on the university community and upgrades were made to prevent future attacks.

'This includes employing specialist staff, implementing new technologies that enhance our ability to detect, respond to and defend against threats to our digital environment,' it said in a statement.
University of Queensland cybersecurity expert Ryan Ko said universities could be more 'porous' in data protection than other institutions.
'Many different people take multiple roles – for example, there are postgraduate students who are both student and staff, so it's a bit more complicated,' Prof Ko said.
Prof Ko said it was common for individuals committing cyber-attacks to start with low-level hacks and progress to more sensitive systems.
'They tend to be opportunistic. They look for the lowest hanging fruit, in this case parking,' he said.

Update: Date: 16:51 BST Title: 'We had to step over injured people' Content: We've been hearing more from 18-year-old student Freddie Sampson who describes how he was directed by emergency workers to leave the bus and wade through the river to safety. "We all went downstairs one at a time," he says. "We had to step over people getting immediate treatment downstairs because there was two people on the floor quite badly injured… I know that one person was quite badly injured on their head. "There was mud everywhere. Down by the bus driver - he was covered in mud completely… People on the bus received injuries and fairly big cuts." Update: Date: 16:24 BST Title: 'It was like we couldn't stop' Content: Barton Peveril student Freddie Sampson was sitting at the front of the bus on the top deck and describes the moment the bus went over the kerb. "We ran into a lamp-post and the whole windscreen shattered," he says. "It was like we couldn't stop and had to weave through traffic trying not to hit any cars and then the bus driver lost control - we went flying into the river. "It was all a bit manic. No-one really knew what was going on. I looked out the front to see people moving out of the way, like cars out the front… I looked round... they were all confused and scared." Update: Date: 16:07 BST Title: Crash scene remains cordoned off Content: A police cordon around the crash scene remains in place. Bishopstoke Road between the Toby Carvery and the Esso garage on the B3037 remains closed while police continue with their investigation. Police said earlier that they anticipate the road will remain closed late into the night. Update: Date: 15:47 BST Title: Police hail 'bravery shown by many people' Content: Insp Andy Tester, from Hampshire police, praises the bravery of members of the public and emergency services who helped at the scene. "There was a lot of bravery shown by many people who were first on scene, who didn't have training to work in water and weren't equipped, but quickly backed up by our fire and ambulance colleagues who did have the right training to make it safe and make it a safe working environment," he says. Update: Date: 15:20 BST Title: Driver and passenger have serious injuries, say police Content: Police have just released this update: "Two people are confirmed to have serious injuries – the driver and one passenger. "Their injuries are not considered to be life-threatening." Update: Date: 15:09 BST Title: 'Shocked and worried' - MP says Content: MP for Eastleigh Liz Jarvis has been giving her reaction to the crash. Speaking on BBC Radio Solent, she says: 'Like everyone, I was very, very shocked and worried about the students who were involved. I understand their parents have all been contacted. "My thoughts are with those who were injured and the emergency services who were on the scene who have done a fantastic job and responded really quickly. "When something like this happens it's about the community coming together. I know the college is doing everything they can to support the students and their parents." Update: Date: 14:46 BST Title: 'I saw cables hanging down from a telegraph pole' Content: Paul Crowther, who works for the local authority, was strimming grass verges near the crash site. He says: "I had all my safety gear on and couldn't hear much. [The] bus must have gone past me, but I didn't notice at the time — I'm only just starting to realise now what could have happened. "[I] looked up and saw cables hanging down from a telegraph pole. A bit further down the road, I saw a set of pedestrian traffic lights that had been hit and were bent in half. 'I helped turn a few vehicles around, but by then the police had arrived and were taking control of the scene. I decided it was best to leave the area. 'I think it probably happened just before 10:00. If it had been an hour earlier, it could have been far worse — there are a few schools nearby, including primary schools.' Update: Date: 14:23 BST Title: Police give update on injuries in 'terrifying' crash Content: Five people, including the bus driver, were taken to hospital for treatment with two of them in a "serious but not life-threatening" condition, according to Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary. Insp Andy Tester says: "It must have been terrifying and my thoughts are very much with the children and the driver on the bus, who must have had a terrifying experience." He adds that several people including the driver were trapped on board when emergency services arrived. He says: "There were a large number of specialist resources helping to get people out of the bus. "Some people had got themselves out of the bus, and it was obviously important to us to triage the injured people, to assess the people who were still stuck in the bus, and to make sure we had accounted for everyone." Update: Date: 13:59 BST Title: Bus remains submerged in River Itchen Content: In a picture just sent back from the scene, the bus can still be seen submerged in the murky water. BBC reporter Jamie Morris says they have been given access to look at the double-decker. "It's gone through metal railings and is on the river bed, not fully submerged," he says. She says she looked out the window when she heard screeching and saw the bus "come careering into the river". "We ran outside, we ran around the front of the bus, spoke to the driver," she says. The driver told her that the "brakes were not working" and "the accelerator jammed" and he was "doing the best he could to avoid cars as he was coming down the road". She helped the "shocked" students that could get off the bus out of the water and into her garden nearby. Chilling new details emerge about how alleged Australian gangland hit carried out in Bali was 'meticulously planned'

New details about the alleged roles played by three men in an execution-style killing of an Australian in a Bali villa earlier this month have been put forward by police. Zivan 'Stipe' Radmanovic, 35, and Sanar Ghanim, 34, were shot just after midnight on June 14 at a villa in Munggu, in Bali's south, in an attack believed to be linked to Melbourne 's feuding Middle Eastern crime syndicates. Radmanovic was killed in the attack, while Ghanim was rushed to hospital before he was later discharged nursing a heavily bandaged leg. Australians Midolmore Pasa Tupou, 27, Darcy Francesco Jenson, 27, and Mevlut Coskun, 22, were arrested and brought to Bali after a tense, five-day manhunt. Speaking at a press conference on Thursday, Bali Police Chief Inspector General Daniel Adityajaya alleged the crime was 'well organised'. 'They have planned the act quite long. One of the perpetrators arrived in Bali in April 2025, the other arrived June 2025,' he said. Police alleged all three of the suspects played key roles in the planning and execution of the alleged hit. Jenson allegedly booked the villa where the murders occurred and supplied tools, including a hammer, and transportation for his co-accused. Jenson also allegedly rented a white Toyota Fortuner and a Suzuki XL7 used during the operation and bought ferry tickets from Java to Bali. He was allegedly photographed while renting the vehicles and purchasing a hammer used to break into the villa. He is also accused of collecting the gunmen from Sidoarjo, East Java, and driving them to Jakarta after the murders to aid their escape abroad. Police allege Coskun and Tupou were the shooters in the attack. Tupou is accused of purchasing the firearm used in the shooting and disposing of a motorbike and other evidence. Coskun is alleged to have purchased jackets worn during the crime and helped Tupou dispose of evidence. Investigators are continuing to develop the investigation in order to gather strong evidence to determine further legal action, police said. Inside the villa, forensic teams recovered extensive ballistic evidence. They gathered two bullet fragments, six bullet casings, and 38 bullet shards in one room of the villa. They also recovered nine bullet casings and 16 bullet shards from another and found a further three bullet casings and one bullet shard in the yard. According to investigators, a hammer was used to break into the villa before the shooters opened fire in rooms one and three. Police said forensic tests allegedly showed gunshot residue on the suspects and on items recovered from a white Toyota Fortuner found nearby, including gloves and a balaclava. A black motorcycle believed to be linked to the crime was also seized, along with a related document. Police confirmed the recovery of one handgun, two magazines with bullets, and an empty magazine found in a river about 700 metres from the villa, in a rice field area in Tabanan. A black backpack with an 'Athlete' logo, 18 bullet casings, 27 live rounds, and a hammer with its purchase receipt were also found nearby. CCTV footage was gathered from multiple locations, including the Sinar Harapan hardware store, Villa Casa 1, and the hotel where Jenson was allegedly seen checking out after the shooting. Police claimed the men initially fled Bali using different vehicles and ferry routes before regrouping in East Java and travelling by bus to Jakarta. Jenson was arrested at Soekarno-Hatta International Airport in Jakarta with the help of airport police. Coskun and Tupou had already flown to Phnom Penh, Cambodia, but were later returned to Indonesia and taken into custody. The suspects face charges under Article 340 of Indonesia's criminal code for premeditated murder, as well as charges for illegal firearm possession under emergency laws. The maximum penalty for the charges is death. 'We are still working on finding the mastermind,' Chief Inspector General Adityajaya said. 'From our investigation, we found out that the crime [was] well organised.' Police said the victim's body has been flown back to Australia. The motive for the alleged hit is still under investigation.

‘I just want my baby back': Mother issues heartfelt plea for missing daughter

The mother of a missing woman thought to have been murdered has pleaded 'I just want my baby back' as the police search intensifies. It comes as police revealed a third man had been arrested as part of the investigation into the disappearance of Reanne Coulson and searches for her begin to focus on a new location. Reanne Coulson, 34, from Coventry, was last seen in Raglan Street when she was captured on CCTV visiting a food bank on 21 May. West Midland's Police said a 38-year-old was detained just before 4pm yesterday in the Coventry area on suspicion of perverting the course of justice and remains in custody. Police have until Friday evening to charge or release another 42-year-old man who was arrested on Tuesday on suspicion of Reanne's murder. A man, aged 53, who was previously arrested in connection with her disappearance, has been released on bail while the investigation continues. Ms Coulson's mother Lynne Sparkes has issued a new appeal as the search for her daughter intensifies. She said: 'Is there anybody out there that knows anything about Reanne's disappearance? 'From one parent to another, you can only imagine how I'm feeling. 'Please come forward to give our family some closure. I just want my baby back.' Officers and police dogs are searching Binley Woods, near Coventry, as well as other areas neighbouring Warwickshire. West Midland's Police said they are 'working round the clock' to locate Reanne and have viewed hundreds of hours of CCTV and taken more than 50 statements from potential witnesses as part of the investigation. Reanne's twin sister Kirsten added: 'If you were in Vauxhall Street on the 21 or 22 May for whatever reason, if you know anything about my sister's disappearance, please let the police know. 'Just pick up the phone no matter how small it is. Anything is better than nothing. Your information might just help us to find her. 'We are all worried sick about her. Words can't describe the pain we are all feeling. Our family are desperate. We need answers. Please help us get Reanne back.' Detective Superintendent Jim Munro, from our Major Crime Unit, said: 'We are continuing to work flat out to find Reanne, and get the answers that her family so desperately need. 'I believe people in the Coventry area know what has happened to her. It may be that they are reluctant to come forward with information, but it's vital that they do. 'Reanne is so loved by her family. Please do the right thing and help us find her, for their sake.'
