Nigel Clough hails Mansfield's ‘unbelievably hard earned' victory at Exeter
Mansfield went in front when Frazer Blake-Tracy rose unopposed to head in a George Maris corner just before half-time, but Exeter were level through Josh Magennis, who scored from the spot after a Sonny Cox shot had been handballed.
But Will Evans finished off a swift counter-attack for the winning goal four minutes from time, much to the delight of Clough.
'We should have had a point from the first couple of games at least, but to come down here with players missing off the back of the win at Chesterfield – I don't know what will happen over the next eight and a half months, but I don't think we will get a better three points.
'It was unbelievably hard earned. You (press) have been up there in the shade, but when you get down on the pitch, it is quite brutal that heat. We had a good shape and everything and deserved what we got off the back of a harsh penalty given against us.
'There is a change in the handball rule and I don't think they are quite sure what is and what isn't handball at the minute. I am sure it will settle down in a few weeks but I wouldn't like to see those given. I don't think there is anything he (Jordan Bowery) could have done about it.
'We responded well and the value of the squad with Aaron Lewis, who was very good at Chesterfield the other night. He came on and made the goal, it was a good move, a good team goal and there is Will Evans to finish it off.'
Exeter manager Gary Caldwell was not happy with his team's performance saying: 'We weren't good enough for the whole game.
'I thought we started OK, but our passing was too slow, our movements were not dynamic enough, we didn't threaten their backline. But too often the passing was too slow, we didn't find the free man or penetrate the last line and then we got bored with having the ball and controlling the game.
'We gave them opportunities and they took one with the set piece and the second half was more of the same. I thought we looked a threat when we changed the shape and we started to get the ball forward. At 1-1, I think everyone in the stadium thought there was only going to be one winner, but we have managed to shoot ourselves in the foot and lose it.
'It's a huge disappointment – a huge disappointment in the last two games to be honest. I am sick of hearing about last week (a 4-1 win against Blackpool) because that is miles away. It was one game.'

Hotline launches Russell Martin doomsday countdown as Celtic have Rangers old timer living in a state of fear
Graeme Young hears from a fanbase on the brink who have major concerns over a the new Ibrox era Scoring four goals in a Premier Sports Cup win doesn't sound like the start of a fresh wave of panic gripping Ibrox, however, the natives are restless once more. Rangers barely convinced in the 4-2 win over Alloa as Russell Martin' s fringe men mixed a clutch of first-teamers made heavy work of the League One side on a baking night in Glasgow. Now Martin is running the gauntlet with four defining games looming. Brugge are up first in a £40m golden ticket encounter to reach the Champions League, before St Mirren in Paisley and the return in Belgium before they welcome Celtic to Ibrox on August 31. The mood has shifted and the natives are unable to hide their growing fears. John Spence, South Ayrshire, said: "The calls for Martin's head have begun. Over the next 4 games, failure in the Champions League, against St Mirren and then, of course Celtic, he could be gone by the end of August! "Even by our recent standards this is a new low. And who will replace him? There wasn't exactly an orderly queue of outstanding candidates as recently as a few weeks ago. So the new regime may stick with Martin and we will need to follow. But they must realise that's a large sum removed from the goodwill bank early doors, and that it's not a bottomless pit." Donald Dundas, Uddingston, said: "I'm sorry but I'm afraid Russell Martin is full of the brown stuff in some of the drivel he comes away with in match interviews. If they play like that v Celtic his jacket will be on the shoogly peg. Victory over Alloa is hardly the huge improvement he said was coming. "Talking of St Mirren the new threat after putting out the big Edinburgh team that according to the usual mob are going to be this season's next best thing?" And the palpable fear surrounding Martin's men has a lifelong worry that the team he loves won't be able to stop Celtic from proverbially ramming his face into his own birthday cake. Rick Hart emailed: "I will be 70 on August 31 and I am dreading it, Celtic will have a field day with this Rangers team, how on earth did Rothwell, Aarons and Dowell ever get a Rangers top, I thought last year was bad this year is going to be horrendous, no imagination , no passion , no defence and a manager well out of his depth with his ability , tactics and team selection , sorry but Martin will be gone faster than he thinks and to be honest he is only here for the money, "Rangers threw Ferguson under the bus for him? Ok, we beat the mighty Alloa 4 -2 myself. I think Rangers were lucky, because Alloa played with passion and guts, something that is lacking in the Rangers team." Phillip Borland emailed: "What a load of rubbish this Rangers team is we were lucky to beat Alloa .We should never have got a penalty against them no way, that should never have been allowed Alloa was robbed. We can also say goodbye to the Champions League. There's no way any of the players we have got will win against Brugge. We are a terrible team, nothing has changed since last season, new manager and 10 new players in and we are still garbage." Across the city, it's all going well on the pitch, however, complaints are never far away as a lack of transfers takes a backseat for once as a punter begs for Brendan Rodgers to fight for his £9million striker. Stephen Mulhern, Dumbarton said: "With Adam Idah's confidence at an all time low and after Kenny not giving Brendan Rodgers food for thought with a average performance leading the line against Falkirk I would have liked to hear Rodgers give Idah a vote of confidence saying he can bag the necessary goals in building up a lead for the second leg, in not doing so I'm convinced Maeda will start through the middle." Hearts don't need the data to tell them they were off it against St Mirren and one onlooker used the Jambos display as a launchpad to get stuck into Derek McInnes. Carl McCoy, Paisley, said: "So it didn't take long for the Tony Bloom/ Derek McInnes juggernaut to come to a shuddering halt. Does anyone really believe that McInnes is anything more than a bang average manager whose teams play horrific football? "His Hearts team are now showing the same traits as his previous sides - falling over at every turn, the dark side of the game in full view. The easy time he gets from all sides is quite something and will never change. I don't pity the Hearts fans because they support Hearts, but I don't think they'll have much to cheer for with him in charge." Hibs have a new hero and Kieron Bowie's brilliance has raised many questions about a burgeoning career ahead. But the Hibees say back off and reckon the big two from Glasgow don't deserve him. John Scott, Grassmoor, said: "What an insult to Hibs. Kieron Bowie scores a spectacular goal and along comes certain members of the media to basically say he's too good for the Hibees. In fact some claim he could be snapped up by either of the Old Firm before the end of the current window. "He's the same player Hibs signed from Fulham while the Glasgow giants didn't pay him any regard. I hope the Hibs board stand firm and dismiss any last minute bids. John McGinn was the biggest rip off of Scottish football ever and Villa knew it. If all these clubs really want Kieron then think of a number and double it."
