CPI(M) opposes move to give money in place of ration goods in Andhra Pradesh
CPI(M) State secretary V. Srinivasa Rao has opposed Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu's announcement that cardholders who do not want ration goods will be given money. The decision will undermine the public distribution system (PDS) and lead to price hike, he says.
In a statement on Sunday, Mr. Srinivasa Rao appealed to the government not to 'starve the poor' under the guise of Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT) scheme. He said the party would opposes the cash transfer scheme under the pretext that people were selling the rice disbursed through the PDS.
'If the price of rice rises in the market, the government's cash component will not increase accordingly, which only harms the poor,' he observed.
'If quality rice is supplied, no one will give up the ₹1-a-kg commodity and buy it at ₹60 per kg in the open market. The solution to prevent illegal transportation and ensure that ration rice is not diverted lies in distributing fine quality rice through the PDS,' Mr. Srinivasa Rao said.
Those who had migrated to other States for livelihood should be allowed to collect their ration once every two or three months, he said, and appealed to the government to withdraw its decision to give cash in place of ration goods.

11 years of Modi govt redefined India's development narrative: Jitendra Singh
New Delhi: With bolder decisions, futuristic reforms, and transformative governance, the Prime Minister Narendra Modi-led government has in the last 11 years redefined India's development narrative and restored public faith in the system, Dr. Jitendra Singh, Union Minister of State (Independent Charge) for Science and Technology, said on Thursday. Singh stated that initiatives like the rollout of GST to the push for Digital India, or the opening up of strategic sectors like space and atomic energy to private players, the past decade has seen the government under PM Modi prioritising long-term national interest and setting new benchmarks in decision-making. 'Each initiative has been driven by the vision of a self-reliant and globally competitive India,' he said, in a media interview. Further, by enabling the Department of Biotechnology (DBT) to foster innovation, particularly in vaccine development, genetic research, and bio-entrepreneurship, the Modi government positioned India as a rising global tech hub. The seamless integration of traditional governance goals with modern technology has been another key feature of the Modi era, the Minister noted. 'Under PM Modi's leadership, sectors like space, atomic energy, and biotechnology received unprecedented push. The global recognition India enjoys today in these fields is a direct result of consistent support and visionary policies,' he said. Citing the example of space tech -- once confined to building rockets – which powers telemedicine, farming, and classrooms, Singh highlighted that 'science is no longer confined to labs'. Space tech is also improving daily life through applications like agricultural weather updates, and online education. The MoS also highlighted transformative initiatives such as the JAM (Jan Dhan-Aadhaar-Mobile) trinity, the Swachh Bharat Mission, and Special Campaign 4.0. Improving social security, PM Modi-led government also launched progressive pension reforms benefiting women. Family pensions will now continue for childless widows even after remarriage, and divorced daughters are entitled to family pensions if divorce proceedings were initiated while their parents were alive, said Singh, adding the upcoming tenure 'will be about accelerating the gains of the last decade'. Meanwhile, the Science and Technology Minister also reaffirmed India's leading role in global climate action, urging citizens and institutions alike to adopt sustainable practices as a national duty. He underlined that India's approach to climate resilience is rooted in both scientific innovation and public participation. 'Earth gives us everything -- clean air, fresh water, fertile land. But we take these gifts for granted,' Singh said, addressing a virtual event organised by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) on the occasion of World Environment Day. Warning the increasing threats from pollution, deforestation, and climate change, he said that combating these challenges must become a collective responsibility, enabled by behavioural change and lifestyle-driven movements like Mission LiFE—Lifestyle for Environment.

CM Naidu, Pawan Kalyan launch one crore plantation in a day programme
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan launched 'Vana Mahotsav' to plant one crore saplings across the state on World Environment Day on Thursday. They, along with Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, planted the saplings at ADCL Park in the state capital, Amaravati. The leaders visited the stalls arranged by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) on environmental protection. PCB Chairman Krishnaiah explained to the Chief Minister the steps being taken for plastic recycling. The Chief Minister directed officials to formulate a special policy on recycling. He asked them to give him a report on this every 15 days. Earlier, Chandrababu Naidu, in his post on 'X' said that nature is not the property of anyone. "Everyone is responsible for protecting the environment. It is our duty to protect forests and water resources. That is why the government has taken up a large-scale tree planting programme. On the occasion of World Environment Day, today, we are requesting everyone to participate in the programme of planting one crore trees in one day," CM Naidu said. "This year, the theme of World Environment Day is plastic pollution eradication. Let us do our part to reduce plastic pollution. Let us take a pledge to protect the environment," he added. Pawan Kalyan, who is also the Minister for Forest and Environment, stated that a clean and healthy environment is the greatest gift we can offer future generations. "Let us act responsibly and take up the duty of environmental protection. Let's plant saplings, prevent water pollution, and work towards the conservation of wildlife," Pawan Kalyan said. Meanwhile, the Forest Department said that Andhra Pradesh currently has 29 per cent land under green (tree) cover. The state government has set a target of increasing this to 50 per cent by 2047 by greening various types of land available with the farmers, the Revenue Department, institutional lands, lands along roadside, railway lines and canals. Out of the total geographical area of 1,62,923 square kilometres in the state, 48,978 square kilometres has green cover. Green cover is planned over an additional area of 32,483 square kilometres. According to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, this year World Environment Day is being celebrated with two themes - 'Vana Mahotsav' programme and 'End plastic pollution' to achieve the goal of a 'Swachh Andhra Pradesh'. A record one crore seedlings will be planted by various departments and other stakeholders across the state in a single day on Thursday. During the 2025 planting season, the Forest Department, Rural Development, Pollution Control Board, Horticulture Departments and others have set a target of planting 5.58 crore saplings over approximately 1.8 lakh hectares in all districts across the state.

Fraud in agri dept: ACB records Anjali Damania's statement
MUMBAI: Social activist Anjali Damania on Wednesday appeared before the Anti-Corruption Bureau (ACB) and submitted evidence regarding alleged fraud in the state agricultural department when it was headed by Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Dhananjay Munde. The activist alleged a ₹161-crore fraud in the department between July 2023 and November 2024, when Munde was a minister in the previous Mahayuti government. 'We recorded her statement for around four hours,' said an ACB official. Damania alleged that despite a central government directive in 2016 to transfer money directly to farmers' bank accounts via Direct Benefit Transfer (DBT), the agricultural department purchased equipment and fertilisers at inflated rates for distribution among farmers. BJP MLA Suresh Dhas had also alleged that Munde was involved in a ₹200-crore scam during his term as minister. The NCP leader has termed the allegations baseless and ridiculous. The ACB said that it is in the process of recording statements and evidence, after which it will start investigation.
