CM Naidu, Pawan Kalyan launch one crore plantation in a day programme
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Deputy Chief Minister Pawan Kalyan launched 'Vana Mahotsav' to plant one crore saplings across the state on World Environment Day on Thursday.
They, along with Municipal Administration Minister P. Narayana, planted the saplings at ADCL Park in the state capital, Amaravati.
The leaders visited the stalls arranged by the Pollution Control Board (PCB) on environmental protection.
PCB Chairman Krishnaiah explained to the Chief Minister the steps being taken for plastic recycling.
The Chief Minister directed officials to formulate a special policy on recycling. He asked them to give him a report on this every 15 days.
Earlier, Chandrababu Naidu, in his post on 'X' said that nature is not the property of anyone.
"Everyone is responsible for protecting the environment. It is our duty to protect forests and water resources. That is why the government has taken up a large-scale tree planting programme. On the occasion of World Environment Day, today, we are requesting everyone to participate in the programme of planting one crore trees in one day," CM Naidu said.
"This year, the theme of World Environment Day is plastic pollution eradication. Let us do our part to reduce plastic pollution. Let us take a pledge to protect the environment," he added.
Pawan Kalyan, who is also the Minister for Forest and Environment, stated that a clean and healthy environment is the greatest gift we can offer future generations.
"Let us act responsibly and take up the duty of environmental protection. Let's plant saplings, prevent water pollution, and work towards the conservation of wildlife," Pawan Kalyan said.
Meanwhile, the Forest Department said that Andhra Pradesh currently has 29 per cent land under green (tree) cover.
The state government has set a target of increasing this to 50 per cent by 2047 by greening various types of land available with the farmers, the Revenue Department, institutional lands, lands along roadside, railway lines and canals.
Out of the total geographical area of 1,62,923 square kilometres in the state, 48,978 square kilometres has green cover. Green cover is planned over an additional area of 32,483 square kilometres.
According to the Principal Chief Conservator of Forests, this year World Environment Day is being celebrated with two themes - 'Vana Mahotsav' programme and 'End plastic pollution' to achieve the goal of a 'Swachh Andhra Pradesh'.
A record one crore seedlings will be planted by various departments and other stakeholders across the state in a single day on Thursday.
During the 2025 planting season, the Forest Department, Rural Development, Pollution Control Board, Horticulture Departments and others have set a target of planting 5.58 crore saplings over approximately 1.8 lakh hectares in all districts across the state.

Vijayawada marks Bakrid with prayers, festive spirit
1 2 Vijayawada: The city witnessed vibrant celebrations on the occasion of Eid-Al-Adha, also known as Bakrid, as thousands of Muslims gathered at major Eidgahs to offer prayers and participate in rituals with devotion and joy. Families sacrificed goats and sheep as a symbol of devotion, sharing the meat with relatives, friends, and the poor. Voluntary organizations also stepped in to support underprivileged worshippers by distributing essentials such as rice, dal, and ghee after the prayers. Chief minister N. Chandrababu Naidu, his deputy Pawan Kalyan, HRD minister Nara Lokesh and opposition leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy extended their heartfelt Bakrid greetings to the Muslim community, wishing for harmony and inclusive progress. The city police made elaborate security arrangements, particularly in the old city and One Town areas, ensuring peaceful and smooth celebrations by deploying additional forces.

Confident in PM's wisdom on delimitation: Andhra Pradesh CM Naidu
Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu said he is confident that Prime Minister Narendra Modi will address the concern of the southern States that any delimitation based only on population would reduce their representation in Parliament. Mr. Naidu's Telugu Desam Party is a key constituent of the ruling National Democratic Alliance led by the BJP at the Centre. 'I am 100% confident in the Prime Minister's wisdom. He will work with everybody and then take forward [the delimitation exercise],' he said. Also read | Gains, losses, and politics in Andhra Pradesh Mr. Naidu spoke to The Hindu at his private residence in the city on a wide range of issues as he completes the first year of his third term as Chief Minister that started on June 12, 2024. Mr. Naidu had played a critical role in 2001, in the consensus Constitutional amendment to delay the inter-State redistribution of parliamentary representation for 25 years, until 2026. The NDA government led by Atal Bihari Vajpayee was in power then and Mr. Naidu was a key partner then too. 'That time also... because of the sentiment [of the Southern States] it was done… That time, we thought, in south India, we were able to control population… that is good. Now north India will control population. Today, we have realised population is an asset, not liability. So north India has more population. They have done a good job…' Mr. Naidu said, explaining the 2001 decision and the present situation. '…we have to keep our sentiment intact. [Regarding] delimitation, appropriate policy will come. They will work it out. That was our concept at that time also [in 2001]. This time also it will happen,' he said. Asked whether the present NDA government was as sensitive as the Vajpayee government in this regard, Mr. Naidu said: '...100%. They will do that. The Prime Minister is very clear that he wants to keep national interest… as most important.…' Mr. Naidu said he had discussed the demographic changes 'broadly' in meetings at NITI Aayog, but did not have an opportunity to speak to the Prime Minister on the issue. 'No, not yet. The time has not yet come [to talk to Mr. Modi]. At an appropriate time [I will talk],' he said, in response to a question. As per the Constitutional amendment in 2001, the next inter-State delimitation shall take place after the first Census after 2026. With the Centre announcing that a fresh Census will conclude by early 2027, southern States have reiterated their demand for 'fair delimitation.' Asked what he thought of the demand by his counterparts in the other four southern States, Mr. Naidu said: '…Issue has not yet come. The demand is being made too early…At the appropriate time [it should be discussed]. When they [the Centre] come with a policy, and if there is any problem for south India, we can talk. Without having anything, if you raise it, it is only political slogan.' Mr. Naidu repeated his call for faster population growth where it has slowed down. 'South India has to go for demographic management. Population is reducing here, older population is increasing... Migrations will happen. Now, we have to promote population growth in a big way… Very difficult task...' he said. Asked whether he was considering any incentive for having more children, the Chief Minister said such experiments have not been successful in any part of the world. 'South India had advanced thinking, for population management and also economic progress. People are not having children now. So we need [to go in] the reverse way. We have to think here about population management. You have to do,' he said.

Activists urge Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah to stop felling of 368 trees in Bengaluru's Cantonment area
Environmental activists have written to Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah urging him to immediately intervene and prevent the felling of 368 trees in the Bengaluru Cantonment railway premises. To facilitate construction, the Railways has sought permission from the Bruhat Bengaluru Mahanagara Palike (BBMP) Forest Cell to axe the trees. Following this, the Deputy Conservator of Forests (DCF) had invited public objections on April 25, 2025. A letter by A.T. Ramaswamy, an environment activist, stated that a campaign held on World Environment Day (June 5) saw participation from seers, retired officials, and environmentalists, all demanding that the trees be saved and the land declared a biodiversity park. The group has accused the BBMP Forest Cell of prioritising corporate interests over public health and green cover. They have called on the Chief Minister to issue immediate directions to stop tree felling and protect Bengaluru's rapidly declining urban canopy. In April, The Hindu first reported that the BBMP issued a public notice inviting objections to the proposed felling of 368 trees located inside the colony. The Rail Land Development Authority (RLDA), under the Ministry of Railways, has sought permission for the removal of trees as part of its 'commercial development project' planned at the site.
