Man remains at large after stabbing 4 in South Korea

SEOUL : South Korean police said today a man remained at large after stabbing four people, leaving two dead, as authorities warned local residents to avoid going out until he was apprehended.
Around 9.30 am today, the suspect stabbed a convenience store owner, a woman in her sixties, and fled the scene in Gyeonggi province, west of Seoul.
After police responded to that stabbing, they went to the suspect's house where they found a body, which 'is yet to be identified', a Siheung police station official told AFP.
About two hours later, the suspect stabbed another man in his seventies, before again fleeing the scene.
Shortly after that, police discovered another body near a house close to the convenience store.
The injured victims were receiving treatment at a hospital and were recovering, a police official said.
The suspect remains at large, and 'the Siheung police station is mobilising all its forces to catch the suspect', the police said.
Local residents received a warning message this afternoon from Siheung city hall saying: 'A stabbing incident occurred today in the Jeongwang-dong area.'
It added that police were 'currently searching the scene'.
'Citizens are advised to avoid going out and prioritise their safety.'
The city later sent out another warning message that the suspect was 'in his mid-50s with a balding head, wearing a dark-coloured jumper and pants, and a light blue top', adding that if he was seen, it should be reported immediately.
'We have released an official public wanted poster for a quick capture,' a Siheung police official told AFP.
The case comes months after a teacher fatally stabbed an eight-year-old student at an elementary school in South Korea, and most recently, a student stabbing four at a school.
However, South Korea is generally a very safe country, with a murder rate of 1.3 per 100,000 people in 2021, according to official statistics, well below the global average of six per 100,000.

Prasarana Malaysia Bhd later said it planned to install platform sensors at LRT stations to enhance passenger safety, particularly for people with disabilities. Prasarana also said then that it would begin installing platform screen doors at LRT stations, similar to those used in MRT stations.

Crime in Kelantan rises 15% in 2024 with notable increases in rape, theft

He said a total of 2,296 cases were reported between January and December last year, up from 1,994 cases in 2023. Violent crime rose by 8.5% from 390 to 423 cases, while property-related crime climbed 16.7% from 1,604 to 1,872 cases, he added. 'Among the most concerning trends is the spike in rape cases, which rose 20.7%, from 130 in 2023 to 157 cases last year,' said Yusoff during the 2025 state police chief town hall meeting held at Universiti Malaysia Kelantan today. Armed robbery without firearms also increased by 25.6% from 43 to 54 cases, while assault cases saw a 6.8% rise from 147 to 157 cases. At the same time, several types of violent crimes recorded significant drops. Murder cases fell by 55.6% from nine to four, and armed robbery involving firearms dropped 60% from five to two cases. In the property crime category, theft remained the most significant contributor with 732 cases in 2024, up 50.9% from 485 cases the previous year. House break-ins also rose sharply by 41.7% with 628 cases, while car theft cases increased by 23.3% from nine to 12. However, motorcycle thefts declined significantly by 46.9% from 128 cases in 2023 to 68 last year.

‘Datuk Seri' turns himself in after alleged pistol-whipping of woman in Penang

(Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : A man with a 'Datuk Seri' title has been arrested by police in George Town, Penang, on suspicion of pistol-whipping a woman motorist on Sunday. Timur Laut police chief Abdul Rozak Muhammad said the 28-year-old victim, a saleswoman, lodged a report over the incident which allegedly took place while she was driving on Jalan Kelawei at 2.30am on Sunday. The incident is believed to have stemmed from a misunderstanding between the suspect and victim, Buletin TV3 reported Rozak as saying. He added that the suspect, 41, was arrested at 9.30am today after turning himself in at the district police headquarters. 'The victim suffered severe injuries to her nose and eyes after being struck by the suspect with the pistol's handle. 'Police have seized a pistol, its magazine and the man's licence for possession of the firearm and ammunition,' said Rozak. The case is being investigated under Section 326 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing hurt using a dangerous weapon and Section 34 of the Arms Act 1960 for carrying a firearm while drunk. The victim was said to be driving towards Tanjung Tokong with two friends when her car skidded and veered into the middle lane before continuing to drive. She then realised she was being tailed by a black Mercedes Benz, which later overtook her and blocked her in front of a petrol station on Jalan Kelawai. The suspect then allegedly placed his pistol into the victim's mouth before striking her several times with the weapon. In her police report, the victim claimed her assailant was drunk.
