Indonesia dismantles baby trafficking ring smuggling infants to Singapore

The case was discovered after a parent reported an alleged baby kidnapping to police, which led them to a suspect who admitted to trading 24 infants, said West Java police's director of general criminal investigation, Surawan, who goes by one name.
The perpetrators are accused of moving the babies to Pontianak city on Borneo island and then sending more than a dozen of them onwards to Singapore, said the official.
'Based on documents, 14 [babies] were sent to Singapore,' he said.
'The age range is clearly under one-year-old, with some three months old, five months old, and six months old.'

Authorities managed to rescue five babies in Pontianak and one in Tangerang, a city near the Indonesian capital Jakarta. They also arrested a dozen suspects across Jakarta, Pontianak and the Javan city of Bandung.
'They are a syndicate, a baby trafficking syndicate. They each have their own roles,' said Surawan.

A Hong Kong teenager has been arrested for alleged drug trafficking following the death of his 16-year-old friend, in whose home police found cannabis and liquid methamphetamine, the Post has learned. 'They are believed to be related to the case,' the force said. The 17-year-old has been detained on suspicion of trafficking in dangerous drugs.

Singapore ship's owners ordered to pay Sri Lanka US$1 billion over plastic spill
Sri Lanka 's top court on Thursday ordered the owners of a Singapore-flagged container ship that sank near its capital to pay US$1 billion in compensation to the island nation's government for causing the most severe marine environmental catastrophe in the country's history. Advertisement The container ship MV X-Press Pearl , which was carrying chemicals, sank off Colombo in June 2021 after catching fire. The Supreme Court said the incident caused 'unprecedented devastation to the marine environment of Sri Lanka' and harmed the country's economy, especially the lives of the fishing communities. Judges said the disaster led to the death of 417 turtles, 48 dolphins, eight whales and numerous fish species that washed ashore after the incident. Debris from the ship, including several tonnes of plastic pellets used to make plastic bags, caused severe pollution on beaches. 'This marine environmental disaster constitutes the largest recorded marine plastic spill in the world,' the judgment said. 'It resulted in the widespread release of toxic and hazardous substances into the marine environment, poisoning ocean waters, killing marine species, and destructing phytoplankton.' Due to the severe marine pollution, the government imposed a fishing ban for well over a year, depriving fishermen of their income and livelihood. Fake water leak alert lures Hongkonger, 70, into HK$4 million online love scam
Nearly 20 Hongkongers have lost HK$10 million (US$1.3 million) to online romance scams over the past two weeks, including a 70-year-old man who was tricked by a fake water leak alert, according to police. The force said on Wednesday that 40 per cent of the victims were aged over 60, adding that one of the cases involved the elderly man who was conned out of more than HK$3 million from his lifelong savings and was also left with an additional HK$1 million in debt. About two months ago, the man received a WhatsApp message from someone pretending to be his neighbour and complaining that his flat had a water leak. 'The sender later claimed she had messaged the wrong person,' police revealed on their CyberDefender Facebook page. Despite the mix-up, the two continued chatting on WhatsApp and then developed an online relationship. The 'neighbour' later claimed that she had insider knowledge about cryptocurrency investments and shared romantic messages to gain his trust. Among the romantic messages the fraudster used in this case were 'You know very well that I've fallen for you' and 'You have to treasure me and do what I say', according to police.
