Ex-Arsenal star set for Premier League return after Ramsdale and Xhaka

Yet another former Arsenal player could make a surprise transfer back to the Premier League following Granit Xhaka and Aaron Ramsdale. Mikel Arteta has been busy this summer spending just shy of £200million on six new players, including Martin Zubimendi, Viktor Gyokeres and Noni Madueke. There could yet be more incomings at the Emirates but this transfer window has also seen several notable ex-Gunners make high-profile moves. Former club captain Xhaka is set to join newly-promoted Sunderland from Bayer Leverkusen in a deal worth up to £17m. The Swiss midfielder only left north London two years ago and achieved great success in Germany, leading Leverkusen to an invincible league and cup double. Wake up to find news on your club in your inbox every morning with Metro's Football Newsletter. Meanwhile, Ramsdale has reportedly said yes to joining Newcastle, with the Magpies now working on the terms of a transfer with Southampton. The England goalkeeper, who only left the Emirates last summer, is available for £20m thanks to a relegation release clause, but could move to St. James' Park on a loan deal. Now, a third player Arteta recently got rid of could be heading back to England, as Sky Sports report that Everton are interested in signing Ainsley Maitland-Niles. The former Three Lions star spent two decades at Arsenal and started the 2020 FA Cup final victory, the last time the club won a major trophy. Capable of playing at full-back and defensive midfield, he struggled to keep his place in the first-team under Arteta and after multiple loan spells, he was released in 2023 and subsequently joined Lyon. It is said Maitland-Niles, who has two years left on his contract with the French club, is open to returning to the Premier League. More Trending Everton boss David Moyes is an admirer of the 27-year-old and is desperate for new signings, recently telling The Athletic: 'I would hope by the time we get to the end of the window, we'd be closer to 10 [new players]. So you can imagine the amount of work we've got to do. 'The club are trying really hard to get the players I want and I've found it really difficult because in my last few years [in his previous job at West Ham], I've been involved in European competition. 'It's a bit easier when you're a club in Europe. You get a better chance of attracting a lot of players. 'We've been in for a lot of really good players. Unfortunately, a lot them have said no at the moment.' For more stories like this, check our sport page. Follow Metro Sport for the latest news on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram. Mark had so much success in three years at Wrexham AFC

Goalkeeper Howard left The Racecourse at the end of last season following three hugely successful years with the club and he has now made the move to ambitious League Two outfit Salford City. On his career highlights, Howard told the Salford website: 'Obviously, to be the only goalkeeper - I'm going to say this - the only goalkeeper ever to go back-to-back-to-back, currently!' Howard, now 38, joined Wrexham in 2022 and he would go on to make 50 league appearances for the club, the majority of them during the record-breaking National League-winning campaign during his first year at the club. During that season, Howard made 39 appearances in all competitions and he stepped into the breach once more the following season after the retirement of former England international Ben Foster. Injuries to Arthur Okonkwo and Callum Burton over the last two seasons have handed Howard a chance between the posts and he turned out 21 times in all competitions. Reflecting on the journey from the National League to the Championship, Howard added: 'Obviously, it's a huge achievement. Obviously, my role changed slightly each year, but it was also about making sure that the club did well. 'So, obviously, that's a huge achievement.' Another Phil Parkinson achievement is another highlight for Howard. He played under Parkinson at Bolton Wanderers when the club secured promotion from League One in 2016-17. 'The Bolton one was against all odds,' added Howard. 'It was almost with the financial implications of the club and where it had been was a difficult one, but a thoroughly enjoyable one and then I had a good spell at Sheffield United and, obviously, playing at Wembley in the FA Cup semi-final is one of the highlights I think. 'Any child watching any level of football will always watch... an FA Cup game and think 'oh, that's the dream to get to Wembley'.' Although now in his late-30s, there is no sign Howard's ready to slow down just yet. 'I think I've been a professional now for 20 years, so I've done something okay along the way and I've played a lot of games,' said Howard. 'Been on the bench for a lot of games. So, at the age I am now, I understand how my role will work as well. 'People will look at it and go 'yes, he's 38, he should be retiring soon'. But, I think I've been injured for three days in the last five years. 'My body's telling me to crack on and I still absolutely love kicking a ball and diving around like an idiot!'

Gary Neville denies Wrexham jealousy in bold Salford prediction after David Beckham takeover

Gary Neville has rejected suggestions he might be envious of Wrexham's rise under Hollywood ownership, claiming Salford City has its own sustainable plan to reach the Championship Gary Neville has denied being jealous of Wrexham's impressive achievements under Hollywood owners Ryan Reynolds and Rob McElhenney. The Welsh side have enjoyed unprecedented success since being taken over by the two actors in 2021, registering three consecutive promotions from the National League to the Championship. Neville previously experienced a similar upward trajectory with Salford City when he first bought into the club back in 2014. The former Manchester United defender invested in the Ammies along with other Class of '92 icons Paul Scholes, Phil Neville, Ryan Giggs and Nicky Butt. Salford initially secured four promotions during a prosperous five-year spell, taking them from the Northern Premier League to League Two. However, their progress then stalled and they have been stuck in the fourth tier since 2019. Neville and fellow United legend David Beckham completed a buyout of Salford as part of a new consortium in May after setting a goal of reaching the Championship within the next five years. But despite being overtaken by Wrexham, who have made it to that level in a shorter time frame, the Sky Sports pundit insists he is not envious of the Red Dragons. "No, I don't wish I was any other football club, I don't work or operate like that," he told FourFourTwo magazine. "With new owners, we've got a plan whereby in four to five years, I'd like to think Salford would be more successful on the pitch. That's the hope. "We will also have invested in our training ground and stadium, and be in a position whereby we can achieve sustainability. That's the real drive of this ownership, to grow revenues, be successful on the pitch, become sustainable and ensure we still meet those values of being affordable and accessible that we had from day one. There's a lot to do and not a lot of time to do it in, but we're committed and that's the most important thing." The comparisons between Wrexham and Salford are perhaps imevitable given the Ammies featured in their own BBC documentary during the early years of the Class of 92 takeover. That was years before before Reynolds and McElhenney turned Wrexham into an unlikely global phenomenon via the Welcome to Wrexham docuseries. However, Neville stressed earlier this year that he and Beckham are planning to take Salford on a different path, which doesn't rely on huge sums of their own money being pumped in. Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate, he said: "Me and Becks decided that we would put money in for the next four or five years, which is a commitment we've all made. There's been quite a lot of money been promised over the next four years. "[But] we won't change the budget, and to reverse out of the model we already have, you need two or three years. You can't just go from investing to becoming sustainable – you've got players' contracts for three years, and you've generally got a model that you've built which you can't get away from. "I think it's very different from Wrexham and Birmingham, where you're talking about hundreds of millions going into those clubs, particularly Birmingham. That's not what we're looking to do with Salford." Join our new WhatsApp community and receive your daily dose of Mirror Football content.
