Selangor aims to cut unemployment rate to 2% by end-2025
State Human Resources and Poverty Eradication Committee chairman V. Papparaidu said that to achieve this goal, various initiatives are being implemented to provide job opportunities and infrastructure, particularly in sourcing skilled workers.
'Currently, the state government is actively conducting career carnival roadshows even at the district level to assist job seekers.
'In addition, we are also arranging meetings with several large companies, including multinationals, to create high-impact job opportunities,' he told reporters after the 2025 Selangor state-level Labour Day celebration at Bangunan Sultan Salahuddin Abdul Aziz Shah here today.
Papparaidu added that more than 3,000 job seekers were assisted last year through job carnivals held in each district.
On May 9, Chief Statistician Datuk Seri Mohd Uzir Mahidin said that Malaysia's labour market continued to record stable progress in the first quarter of 2025, with key indicators showing an increase in the number of employed persons and labour force participation rate, while the unemployment rate declined.
Mohd Uzir said at the state level, the Federal Territory of Putrajaya recorded the lowest unemployment rate at 1.8 per cent, followed by Melaka and Penang (1.9 per cent each) and Selangor (2.2 per cent).

Media Prima pays courtesy call on Penang governor
PENANG - GEORGE TOWN: The senior management team of Media Prima Bhd (MPB) today paid a courtesy call on Penang Yang di-Pertua Negeri Tun Ramli Ngah Talib at his residence in Seri Mutiara here. "We are honoured to be given this opportunity to meet with Tun. Indeed we had a fruitful and meaningful meeting with him. "We discussed cooperation and support that we can provide to the Penang government in particular," he said. Rosli said among the matters discussed today was how MPB could collaborate with the Yang di-Pertua Negeri's office to develop initiatives that we could undertake for the people of Penang. "We will do our best in our collaboration going forward," he added. Rosli also MPB was also honoured with Ramli's recent appointment, especially since he was someone experienced and had contributed greatly to the country. "We are proud of Tun's appointment and we pray that he remains healthy and continues to govern Penang," he said.

State to hold workshops to boost Orang Asli economy

Selangor government will hold workshops to identify eligible Orang Asli who qualify for government assistance. Mentri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari said Orang Asli participation in the various government programmes remained low. 'For instance, only 10 Orang Asli villages in Selangor have applied for funds under Sejati Madani. 'Sejati Madani is a Federal Government programme that allocates between RM50,000 and RM100,000 to boost the economy of villages. 'Hence, I will ask the state standing committee in charge of Orang Asli to identify eligible beneficiaries through workshops,' he said after attending the state-level Orang Asli Festival at Kampung Orang Asli Kelinsing in Sepang, Selangor. Amirudin said the state aimed to promote the Orang Asli economy by designating their handicrafts as official souvenirs for government departments, agencies and events. He said the state would showcase unique items of cultural and heritage importance like the Orang Asli woven headgear. 'This step will not only showcase the community's identity, but create new market opportunities to increase their income. 'These items can be used as souvenirs for Asean conferences and the like, hence introducing these products to a wider stage,' he said. 'The state believes that fair and comprehensive access to education is key to building a more prosperous and competitive future for the Orang Asli,' he said. Papparaidu added that the Selangor Technical Skills Development Centre (STDC) welcomed Orang Asli who were keen to join programmes. 'As Selangor's technical and vocational development centre, STDC is committed to offering inclusive learning opportunities tailored to participants' interests and potential,' he said. 'This includes people from indigenous communities. 'This approach will enable the Orang Asli to acquire practical, relevant skills, paving the way for more stable careers and sustainable incomes.' Sim: Sabah Labour Law amendments level field
Some of the 2,000 trade union members pose for a group photo with the special invited guests.-Information Department photo PENAMPANG (Aug 4): Amendments to the Sabah Labour Ordinance (SLO), effective May 1, have strengthened workers' rights in the state and aligned them with protections already in place in Peninsular Malaysia, said Human Resources Minister Steven Sim Chee Keong. Speaking at the 2025 Sabah State Labour Day Assembly at the International Technology and Commercial Centre (ITCC) today, Sim said the amendments — over two decades in the making — have finally addressed long-standing legal imbalances while abolishing outdated provisions such as the ban on women working at night. 'Previously, there were provisions that were no longer relevant. These have now been harmonized with the Employment Act 1955,' Sim told reporters. The Labour Day event gathered over 2,000 trade union representatives and was officiated by Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Hajiji Noor, who also handed over the Sabah contingent flag for the upcoming Workers' Sports Games (SUPER), to be held in Penang this September. Sim also announced that the Ministry of Human Resources (KESUMA) will table the Gig Workers Bill in Parliament this month to provide legal protections for Malaysia's growing gig economy workforce. 'The MADANI Workers' Card programme has registered over 150,000 participants, offering benefits such as discounts on basic necessities. In Sabah, one company is even offering a 10 percent discount on home purchases for cardholders,' he added. Additionally, Sim launched the country's first KESUMA One-Stop Service Centre, located in Sabah, which consolidates services from nine departments and five agencies under one roof for the convenience of workers and employers. He also revealed that a comprehensive review of 28 labour-related laws is currently underway — including both the Sabah and Sarawak Labour Ordinances — to ensure alignment with current needs and international labour standards. 'There are no plans to abolish the existing ordinances, but harmonization and refinement are ongoing to ensure all workers in the country receive fair and balanced rights,' he said. Also present at the event were Sabah Minister of Industrial Development and Entrepreneurship Datuk Phoong Jin Zhe, Director-General of Trade Unions Mohd Asri Abdul Wahab, Cuepacs President Datuk Dr Adnan Mat, and Sabah Department of Trade Union Affairs Director Noraini Ithnin.
