No California city cracks top 100 of US News' Best Places to Live

Yahoo20-05-2025
(KRON) — U.S. News & World Report released its annual 'Best Places to Live' rankings for 2025-26 on Tuesday. Although California, especially the Bay Area, is among one of the most expensive places to live, those cities are not viewed as the best places to live, according to the nationally renowned publication.
No California city cracked in U.S. News' top 100 list. The highest-ranked California city was Folsom in Sacramento County at No. 119. Although not very high on the list, three Bay Area cities were included in the top 200: Palo Alto (No. 148), Cupertino (No. 151) and San Ramon (No. 180).
Three cities in Texas cracked the top 10. Johns Creek, Ga. took home the top ranking at No. 1.

Even in U.S. News' 'Best Big Cities to Live' list, California wasn't shown with much love as the highest-ranking city was San Diego at No. 15. San Francisco, the first Bay Area city to crack the list, was ranked No. 20. San Jose ranked No. 24.

U.S. News analyzed 859 of the most populated cities in the country. Main factors include the city's 'job market, value, quality of life and desirability.' The ranking weighed the following factors as such.
Quality of Life Index (26%)
Value Index (25%)
Desirability Index (24%)
Job Market Index (23%)
Net Migration (2%)
Each of those indexes had subfactors that contributed to its score in that category.
U.S. News combined those weighted indexes and converted the value to come up with a 10-point scale. The publication used data from sources such as the Bureau of Labor Statistics, U.S. Census Bureau, Department of Commerce, the Federal Reserve and the Bureau of Economic Analysis.
The full methodology can be viewed on U.S. News' website.

Trump ‘Wins' on the Backs of U.S. Consumers

Greg Ip's analysis of President Trump's trade war 'victory' rests on a fundamental economic misunderstanding ('Deal or No Deal, Trump Wins on Trade,' U.S. News, July 16). Mr. Ip writes that the president has succeeded because others are paying for access to the U.S. market, citing $27 billion in June customs revenue. Yet tariffs are paid by U.S. importing companies to the Treasury, not foreign exporters. That $27 billion didn't come from Chinese or European governments—it came from American businesses. These costs are then passed on to American consumers through higher prices, as is evidenced by the most recent inflation reports. This means Americans, not foreigners, are paying for these tariffs twice: first through corporate tariff payments, then through elevated consumer prices.

Parents across the country are looking for creative ways to offset back-to-school costs, and one smart purchase could save them hundreds of dollars on supplies. A late July survey from U.S. News found that 85% of Americans are concerned about back-to-school prices, with the threat of tariffs impacting prices on basic supplies. The National Retail Federation estimated that school spending is expected to average around $858 per household in 2025. But, back-to-school shopping doesn't need to be chaotic, overwhelming, or outrageously expensive — if you know where to find the right deals. Take Amazon, for example, where shoppers can sift through a dedicated back-to-school section and snag the newly-released 44-piece School Supply Kit for just $18. It's on sale for 21% off today, right in time for the start of the school season. For a fraction of the national average, students will be stocked up on the majority of the essentials — that is, a bundle of colorful pens, pencils, sticky notes, scissors, highlighters, notebooks, glue sticks, and a plethora of other desk supplies that they'll need for staying on top of their studies this school year. Of course, it comes with backups for when they lose things, too. The Amazon Basics Student Success Kit is already flying off the shelves, with thousands of parents calling it a genius hack and time-saver, and others claiming that it has 'almost everything' you need to cross off the school supply list. Amazon Skip the trips to the stores, scavenger hunt through aisles, and disagreements over marker brands and pencil box colors. Thousands of parents are purchasing Amazon's new school supply set and rave about how well-curated it is for students of all ages. 'I picked up this 44-piece student success kit as a way to jumpstart the school year for one of our kids, and it really exceeded my expectations,' one shopper shared. 'It's rare to find a school supply set that feels both complete and practical without any fluff or filler, but this one does exactly that.' The stationery supplies are offered in a variety of shades for color-coding. Writing supplies are simple and neat, with plenty of room for labeling. Plus, parents say the addition of a ruler, scissors, and a sharpener rounds out the value, making it a very 'smart buy' ahead of the school year.
