The Winnipeg Jets are no strangers to pressure, but Saturday, May 17 brought a different kind of weight, one not measured in goals or saves but in grief and resilience. Just hours after learning of the sudden death of his father Brad, Mark Scheifele made the difficult decision to suit up for Game 6 of the Western Conference Second Round against the Dallas Stars Jets captain Adam Lowry, visibly shaken, described Brad Scheifele as a man whose energy filled every room. 'It's a terrible loss,' Lowry said. 'As he said, that'd be wishes of his dad. He would want him to play,' Arniel shared. 'We got to see him earlier in the St. Louis series, and he's with us. Mark really wants to play for him tonight.'Winnipeg general manager Kevin Cheveldayoff echoed the organization's full support. 'We're a family, and we're going to do everything we can to support our family,' he said. From snubs to shockers: Five NHL all-rookie team moments that still have fans talking
NHL Logo: Five NHL all-rookie team moments that still have fans talking (Getty Images) Since the NHL All-Rookie Team debuted in the 1982-83 season, it's been a benchmark for emerging talent, a stamp of approval that a first-year player has truly arrived. But the history of this award isn't just a clean list of names. It's dotted with oddities, surprises, and records that feel almost impossible to replicate. My NHL All Rookie Team This Season // #shorts #nhl Historic highs and baffling misses In 1987, the Los Angeles Kings achieved something no other NHL team has matched: three rookies from the same roster making the All-Rookie Team in one season. Luc Robitaille, Jimmy Carson, and Steve Duchesne all earned the honor, with Robitaille also claiming the Calder Trophy as rookie of the year. Five years later, the league witnessed the opposite, a shocking omission. In 1992, Pavel Bure captured the Calder Trophy but somehow didn't make the All-Rookie Team. Splitting his season between left and right wing, his votes were divided between the two positions. Tony Amonte and Gilbert Dionne secured the winger spots instead. The NHL quickly adjusted its voting system to avoid another situation like this. Luc Robitaille and Jimmy Carsons Magical Season Rookie records that defied the norm Some rookies don't just make the All-Rookie Team; they rewrite history, and in 1990-91, Ed Belfour dominated as a first-year goaltender. No other rookie has matched this triple-award sweep. The 1989-90 season brought another outlier: Sergei Makarov, a 31-year-old former Soviet League star, who led all rookies with 86 points for the Calgary Flames. Despite being over a decade older than most rookies and 12 years older than Mike Modano, the next-best rookie scorer, Makarov claimed both the Calder and All-Rookie Team honors. His win sparked an NHL rule change, limiting rookie eligibility to players aged 25 or younger. Goaltenders who did it twice If making the All-Rookie Team once is a career highlight, doing it twice is nearly unheard of. Only two players, both goaltenders, have pulled it off. Jamie Storr earned back-to-back honors in 1998 and 1999 after limited appearances in his first season kept him eligible. Over a decade later, Jake Allen achieved the same distinction in 2013. And again in 2015, with non-consecutive seasons of standout play. While the NHL All-Rookie Team is meant to spotlight rising stars. These unusual cases show that the path to rookie glory isn't always straightforward, whether it's an unexpected snub, a record-setting season, or a rare repeat honor. The award's history proves that even in a league built on stats and performance. As there's always room for the unexpected. Rasmus Andersson fires back at NHL trade rumors, calls speculation 'overblown'
NHL-Rasmus Andersson (Credit: Getty Images) The NHL offseason hasn't been short on drama for the Calgary Flames, and defenseman Rasmus Andersson has found himself right at the center of it. Entering the final year of his contract for the 2025-26 season, Andersson has been the subject of intense trade speculation. Various reports suggested he had asked for a move and provided the Flames with a list of preferred destinations. However, Andersson has publicly pushed back against that narrative, stating that he has not approached the team to facilitate a trade. — NHLRumourReport (@NHLRumourReport) Calgary Flames' offseason clouded by Rasmus Andersson rumors For a Flames roster looking to stabilize after a turbulent couple of years, keeping one of their most reliable blueliners is no small matter. The 28-year-old Swedish defenseman remains a key figure on the ice. Also logging heavy minutes and contributing both defensively and offensively. His presence is especially crucial given Calgary's aspirations to contend in a competitive Western Conference. 2023-24 Highlights - Rasmus Andersson Offers roll in, but Calgary holds firm That hasn't stopped rival NHL teams from testing Calgary's resolve. According to insider reports, general manager Craig Conroy has received multiple serious trade proposals for Rasmus Andersson, including one from the Los Angeles Kings that reportedly featured an eye-catching package. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Kate Middleton's Daring Outfit Took Prince William's Breath Away Crowdy Fan Undo While details of the offer remain under wraps, the suggestion was that it could have brought in valuable draft picks and young talent. Vegas Golden Knights speculation gains traction Adding fuel to the rumor mill, some chatter has linked Rasmus Andersson to the Vegas Golden Knights. The defending Stanley Cup contenders have a reputation for aggressive roster moves and are always on the lookout for experienced defensive depth. However, there's little to suggest that any serious negotiations have taken place between Calgary and Vegas at this point. Even so, speculation will likely continue to swirl until Andersson's future is resolved. With the NHL regular season looming, teams in need of a proven top-four defenseman will keep Calgary's phone ringing. For now, though, Andersson remains in Alberta, focused on preparing for training camp rather than plotting a move to another franchise.
