Australian film-maker Adam Elliot's first feature, Mary And Max (2009), a bittersweet tale of a young chocolate-loving misfit from Melbourne and her pen-pal friendship with a reclusive, middle-aged New Yorker, was a hit with animation fans and critics. It established Elliot as a brilliant storyteller whose mordant sense of humour is matched by his faith in the human capacity for kindness and kinship.
Memoir Of A Snail (2024) is the much-anticipated follow-up. Its Singapore premiere is co-presented by the Singapore Film Society (SFS) and The Projector, in partnership with the film festival Animation Nation.
Told in a style Elliot calls 'clayography', in which pieces of clay are hand animated, frame by painstaking frame, the story of Grace Pudel (voiced by Emmy-winning actress Australian Sarah Snook) unfolds.
She is a snail collector and a fan of guinea pigs and romance novels. Following a brutal separation from her beloved brother, Grace falls into despair. She meets the eccentric Pinky (double Oscar nominee Jacki Weaver), an older woman with an unconquerable zest for life.
The film earned an Oscar nomination in 2025 for Best Animated Feature, and its other awards include Best Feature at the Annecy International Animated Film Festival in 2024.

Every year, this festival travels the world showcasing films dedicated to the sport of climbing. The 19th edition features three documentaries in one anthology.
Death Of Villains follows a climber seeking to redeem himself with a difficult climb, helped by a partner – the villain of the title – with a shady past.
Riders On The Storm sees three Belgians braving icy conditions during a hazardous ascent in South America's Patagonia region, while in The Cobra & The Heart, a climber who betrayed his loved ones and abandoned all he once cherished tries to fix his mistakes.
Reel Rock's premiere day, May 17, will be marked by a pop-up market from 12.30 to 6pm on level 5, with the participation of local brands Full Crimp Milk, Boulder Planet, Mag on crag, ded.within, Isaac Thread and Your Local Newsstand.

The sixth movie in the slasher franchise follows college student Stefani (Kaitlyn Santa Juana), who is failing her classes because of nightmares about a mass death event. She investigates their source, involving her grandmother Iris (Gabrielle Rose) and a catastrophe she averted in 1968, creating generations which might not have existed.
Death will wipe them out, unless Stefani and her brother Charlie (Teo Briones) thwart the process.
This franchise is popular, but has not scaled horror fandom heights, due to its pessimistic tone.
The new movie plays to its strength, death's inevitable but sudden appearance, in a way that is both darkly funny and horrifying. The opening scenes contain a catastrophe that sets Death's machinations in motion. This time, the creators opted for a more elaborate setup - the opening gorefest is pretty, with the 1960s aesthetics adding fresh poignancy.

Weinstein, 73, is accused of raping an actress and assaulting two women in what prosecutors have called a pattern in which the onetime Hollywood kingmaker used his power and influence to lure in victims and then keep them silent. The Miramax studio co-founder has pleaded not guilty and has denied ever having non-consensual sex with anyone. Weinstein, suffering from a litany of health problems, was present throughout the trial in a wheelchair. Weinstein already will likely spend the rest of his life in prison due to a 16-year prison sentence for rape in California. Weinstein was convicted of rape by a jury in a previous trial in Manhattan in February 2020, but the New York Court of Appeals in April 2024 threw out the conviction and ordered a new trial, citing errors by the trial judge. Weinstein had been serving a 23-year sentence in a prison in upstate Rome, New York, when the conviction was overturned. That conviction had been a milestone for the #MeToo movement, which encouraged women to come forward with allegations of sexual misconduct by powerful men. Weinstein has been held at New York City's Rikers Island jail since his conviction was overturned. He has had several health scares while being held at Rikers, and in September was rushed to a hospital for emergency heart surgery. Prosecutors with the office of Manhattan District Attorney Alvin Bragg have portrayed Weinstein as a serial predator who promised career advancement in Hollywood to women, only to then coax them into private settings where he attacked them. Weinstein's lawyer Arthur Aidala rejected that characterization during his opening statement to the jury, saying the Oscar-winning producer had "mutually beneficial" relationships with his accusers, who ended up with auditions and other show business opportunities. Bragg's office originally accused Weinstein of sexually assaulting former production assistant Miriam Haley in 2006 and raping aspiring actress Jessica Mann in 2013, charges he was convicted of in the first trial. For the retrial, prosecutors added a new charge that Weinstein assaulted another woman in Manhattan in 2002. The woman, Kaja Sokola of Poland, testified that Weinstein assaulted her in a Manhattan hotel room. More than 100 women, including famous actresses, have accused Weinstein of misconduct. He has denied assaulting anyone or having non-consensual sex. Miramax studio produced many hit movies in its heyday, including "Shakespeare in Love" and "Pulp Fiction." Weinstein's own eponymous film studio filed for bankruptcy in March 2018, five months after the original sexual misconduct accusations became widely publicized. In social media posts made on June 2, Mr Tharman uploaded photos of himself meeting the Grammy-, Oscar- and Golden Globe-winning music and film icon popularly known as 'ARR'. Rahman, 58, was in town on the weekend of May 10 and 11 for the premiere of Le Musk, a multi-sensory virtual reality (VR) film he directed that is screening at Golden Village Suntec City until Aug 12. 'Our Indian music and cultural talents, from classical to the most contemporary and edgy, are naturally a minority in the local scene. But they make Singapore's multiculturalism all the more special,' President Tharman wrote. 'ARR has also done our own talents good over the years, by giving them valuable exposure,' he added, listing the home-grown acts who have worked with Rahman - rapper-songwriter duo Lady Kash and Krissy, singer-musician Shabir and rapper Yung Raja. Rahman's collaborations include Wanna Mash Up?, song with Lady Kash and Krissy for the 2014 Hindi film Highway. President Tharman Shanmugaratnam praised A.R. Rahman is a prolific musician, composer and singer whose works span more than160 film soundtracks and albums. Incorporating Indian classical with contemporary Western, his music famously transcended Tamil, Hindi and Telugu films, and made a mark in Hollywood, the West End and Broadway. He gained global fame when his soundtrack to the Mumbai-set British film Slumdog Millionaire (2008) earned him Oscars for Best Original Score and Best Original Song (for the upbeat number Jai Ho) at the 2009 Academy Awards. The crime drama romance, which starred Dev Patel and Freida Pinto, also won Rahman Best Compilation Soundtrack Album and Best Song Written for Visual Media at the 2010 Grammy Awards. Le Musk, a 37-minute film that marks his directorial debut, uses pioneering camera technologies to present an immersive film that blends virtual reality, haptics, music and fragrance. Screened exclusively at GV Suntec, viewers wear VR headsets and sit in special egg-shaped chairs that release scents. Rahman has staged several concerts in Singapore, most recently at the National Stadium on Aug 31, 2024. Father of Ian Fang's victim speaks out, affirms decision to sue the ex-actor
Following the declaration by the victim's mother that she was "going to sue Ian Fang until he goes bankrupt", the girl's father spoke to CNA to recount his side of the story. "Let the guy learn," said the girl's father. "Mark him for life. He marked my daughter for life." Ex-actor Ian Fang, 35, was sentenced to 40 months' jail for sexual offences committed against the girl before she turned 16. He had sex with the teen on nine occasions between June and July 2024, mostly unprotected, which led to her contracting human papillomavirus (HPV), a sexually-transmitted disease. The girl and her family's identity are protected by a court order, while the gag order on Fang's identity was lifted following an application by the prosecution. Speaking to CNA, the victim's father said that his daughter was manipulated by Fang. "He knew that at that age you are still quite naive, immature. Your thoughts are all over the place, you don't know how to really make decisions." He accused Fang of using his age and celebrity status "to show that he could take care of her… give her a sense of security where probably boys of her age couldn't". Fang "abused his power" to take advantage of her while she was infatuated with him, he said. The family was "disgusted" to see Fang, whom they once considered a friend, actively posting on social media "like nothing happened". Oscar-winning performance Fang met the girl and her mother at an event. He befriended the girl's parents and was even treated to dinners. "We had drinks with him and everything. (He) called me 'bro' and this and that. And then behind my back, he's (having sex with) my daughter." The father also claimed that Fang introduced the family to other celebrities to win them over. "He would meet us and act like nothing has happened. And he will ask my daughter to play along," the father said. "We didn't know at all. He played his acting role so well. Speechless, speechless. Really give him an Oscar for that." The girl only confessed to their relationship after she contracted HPV from Fang. "What my wife had to do was basically tell her: 'Okay, you need to tell us who did this to you, because if you don't tell us, I'm not going to pay for your medical fees'. "And when she (saw) her health, her situation was that bad - that's how we actually managed to squeeze it out from her, all this information." The girl's father revealed that Fang pressured her to keep their relationship a secret by using the prospect of him going to jail, and the extreme of killing himself. Even after a police report was filed in August 2024, Fang continued contacting the girl despite being instructed not to. "Every single day, by the time it hits around midnight to 2am, that was a crucial timing, I would say. The phone never stops," said the girl's father. When she blocked one phone number, Fang would call again from another number. "And whenever she (picked) up the phone call, he wouldn't speak. He would just play songs, like those love songs and those Chinese love songs." The ex-actor would sometimes then "blurt out some of the words" and cry. Breakdown of trust Before meeting Fang, the victim had never given her parents a reason to worry as she was a good student, said her father. However, her relationship with the then-34-year-old made her dishonest about her whereabouts. "If she tells us she's going to school or she's going for her lessons, we'll just (say) 'okay, sure'. We never go and CSI really what's going on." "We always gave our full 100 per cent trust to her. So we didn't know that that's how she went out with him and stuff like that. We didn't know at all." The girl's parents now keep track of their daughter's whereabouts using the location-tracking app on her phone. The victim's father told CNA that his daughter now feels regret for her actions during her relationship with Fang. "She's getting better, definitely, but it takes time … now we just spend more time with her, focus on her studies, focus on what she enjoys doing." "However she's feeling, we can't really know what is going (on) you know." "But as a parent ... we are trying our best to make her happy again." No caning Fang was charged under Section 376A(2)(b) of the Penal Code, which does not include caning as punishment. The section deals with sexual offences against minors which do not carry the element of an exploitative relationship. CNA reported that their lawyer Richard Siaw has been "instructed to commence civil proceedings against Fang for harms inflicted on the victim, to get redress over and above the sentence for criminal offences". Suicidal thoughts surfaced after Fang reached out to the victim to threaten to kill himself if he went to jail. He instructed her to cry in front of her mother so that she would not press charges against him. The girl was warded at the Institute of Mental Health for almost a week in August 2024, and was later diagnosed with adjustment disorder with depressed mood. In her victim impact statement, she said she felt very dependent on Fang and believed the only way to keep him close to her was to have sex. She also stated that she had become fearful of middle-aged men and had lost trust in relationships. CNA reported that a civil claim is viable, as criminal and civil proceedings are independent of each other. The family's lawyers are currently putting the case together. When contacted by CNA, the lawyer who represented Fang in his criminal case did not make a comment on the matter. The victim's father emphasised they were not suing Fang for monetary compensation, but to teach him a "lesson". "I will never touch a single cent from him. Everything will be donated to a charity," he said. "But I want to make this guy learn his lesson, and why we sue him is because there is no rotan (Malay for cane)."
