Time of India22-04-2025

Coimbatore: At least 464 open space reservation (OSR) sites in the city limits are awaiting name transfer, as per the report that the civic body submitted at a meeting district collector Pavankumar G Giriyappanavar convened on Monday.
The meeting was attended by officials with various govt departments and some major land promoters. The city corporation cited active encroachments, joint patta documents and lack of proper gift deed documents as the major reasons for rejecting the name transfer applications of 274 of the 464 OSR sites.
Of the remaining sites awaiting name transfer, the corporation said, around 100 were categorized as natham land, another 85 as sarkar poramboke land and the remaining five as settlement land.
The civic body said the central zone had 21 OSR sites pending title transfers. At least 11 of those sites are sarkar poramboke land parcels, while the remaining ones come with active encroachments, joint patta documents and lack of proper gift deed documents. In the east zone, 54 of 88 sites awaiting name transfer are sarkar poramboke land parcels and the rest 34 are those with active encroachments, joint patta documents and lack of proper gift deed documents. Of the total 102 pending files in the north zone, 11 are sarkar poramboke land parcels and 91 are rejected files.

In the west zone, out of the total 119 OSR sites pending title transfers, four are sarkar poramboke land parcels, 56 are natham land parcels and 59 are those with active encroachments, joint patta documents and lack of proper gift deed documents. The south zone tops the list with 129 OSR sites, of which, five are sarkar poramboke land parcels, 44 are natham land parcels, 80 are those with active encroachments, joint patta documents and lack of proper gift deed document and the remaining five are settlement land parcels.
The corporation has more than 2,000 OSR sites within its limits, of which about 1,400-odd sites have got their title transferred. The remaining 464 files have been pending for more than six months.
Commenting on this data, activist S P Thiyagarajan told TOI, "The numbers presented at the meeting are just from the approved layouts. Whereas the corporation has nearly 2,300 OSR sites. They should list the OSR sites within apartments, commercial complexes and unapproved layouts. All these should be reclaimed and have a title transfer."

Strawberry Moon 2025: What it is, when to watch, and why it might look red

Skywatchers in the U.S. and UK are in for a treat as June's full moon—known as the Strawberry Moon—lights up the sky in the early hours of June 11, 2025. Why is it called the Strawberry Moon? The name comes from Native American traditions, where June's full moon signaled the time to harvest wild strawberries. Despite the name, the moon doesn't actually turn pink—though this year, it just might appear reddish. When to see it U.S.: The moon will reach peak illumination at 3:44 a.m. ET on June 11. However, it will look full as it rises on the evening of June 10, making that night the ideal time for viewing. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Support elderly mothers. Donate Today HelpAge India Donate Now Undo UK: Stargazers can catch the Strawberry Moon late on Tuesday night, June 10, as it appears low in the southern sky. Why could it look red? This year's Strawberry Moon might live up to its name in color, thanks to its unusually low position in the sky. Because it's sitting so close to the horizon, its light passes through a thicker layer of the Earth's atmosphere. That scatters blue light and lets more red and orange hues through—similar to what you see during a sunset. Live Events The reddish tint may also be intensified by haze from wildfires, adding to the spectacle. What's causing the moon to sit so low? It's all due to a rare astronomical event called a major lunar standstill, which occurs only once every 18.6 years. During this time, the moon reaches the most extreme points in its orbit—rising and setting at its northernmost and southernmost positions. This causes June's full moon to trace a particularly low arc across the sky, making it appear larger and more colorful to the naked eye. The last time this happened was in 2006, and we won't see it again until 2043. How to watch it Look toward the eastern horizon as the moon rises after sunset on June 10. For the best view, try to find a location away from city lights with a clear view of the horizon. Weather permitting, parts of the UK and U.S. will enjoy excellent visibility. Is it really pink? No—but it might look reddish or orange. The name "Strawberry Moon" comes from seasonal tradition, not color. The reddish appearance is an optical effect caused by the moon's low angle and atmospheric conditions.

The burning ship: Singapore-flagged vessel ablaze after container blast off Kerala coast; 4 crew missing, 18 rescued

KOCHI: A swift and coordinated rescue effort led by the Indian Navy and Coast Guard saved 18 crew members from a blazing Singapore-flagged cargo vessel, MV Wan Hai 503, after a container explosion triggered a major fire 44 nautical miles off Azhikkal coast in Kerala's Kannur on Monday morning. The fire broke out around 9.20 am, when an explosion occurred in one of the containers aboard the vessel, which was en route from Colombo, Sri Lanka to Nhava Sheva Port, Mumbai with 22 crew members on board. The Indian Coast Guard (ICG) received a distress signal shortly after the explosion and mobilised immediate rescue and firefighting assets. As flames spread rapidly and smoke engulfed the deck, the crew abandoned the burning ship using life rafts, floating adrift in the Arabian Sea. The Indian Navy's INS Surat, which was diverted from duty, managed to rescue all 18 survivors from these rafts and transported them safely to Mangalore Port by Monday evening. One of the rescued sailors reportedly sustained serious injuries and was given urgent medical attention. However, four crew members — two Taiwanese, one Indonesian, and one Myanmarese — remain missing since the explosion. Rescue operations involved two Dornier surveillance aircraft and five Coast Guard vessels, including those with specialised firefighting and pollution control capabilities. by Taboola by Taboola Sponsored Links Sponsored Links Promoted Links Promoted Links You May Like Esta nueva alarma con cámara es casi regalada en Arrecifes (ver precio) Verisure Undo Nearby merchant ships, MV Ambra and MV One Marvel, also responded to the emergency under the International Safety Net (ISN) activated by the Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC), Mumbai. Preliminary reports suggest that several containers may have fallen overboard, and the fire—fuelled by dangerous cargo including flammable and toxic substances classified by the International Maritime Organisation (IMO)—continues to burn. The vessel was adrift as of Monday evening, with firefighting efforts underway to prevent further explosions or an environmental disaster. Authorities have advised ships in the area to maintain a safe distance. The Flag Administration of Singapore has been notified, and India's Directorate General of Shipping has directed the ship's owners to deploy expert salvors and provide regular updates until the fire is contained.
