Apple shares face more pain as Trump's tariff threat looms

Analysts express skepticism regarding the actual implementation of the proposed tariffs, with some suggesting that if enforced, Apple may have to raise iPhone prices significantly, potentially by $250-$300, to maintain gross margins, which could lead to reduced consumer demand. The current political and economic climate has led to a reduction in earnings estimates for Apple Inc., with the consensus for net earnings in 2026 dropping by 5.1 per cent over the past three months, further complicating the company's financial outlook amidst ongoing trade uncertainties.

Inc. shares are coming off their longest selloff in more than three years, as escalating attacks from the White House threaten to further erode the company's profit outlook, suggesting the stock's struggles this year are far from over.
President Donald Trump on Friday threatened to levy a 25% tariff on the company's products if it doesn't shift iPhone production to the US. Shares fell 3% to end the week, their eighth straight negative session, the longest such selloff since January 2022.
Some analysts are skeptical that the tariffs will come to pass, but any movement in this direction will put the company in a position where it either has to absorb the higher costs, weighing on its earnings and margins, or pass along higher prices to consumers, which could erode demand at a time when Apple is already struggling with tepid growth and difficulties with its artificial intelligence offerings.
'The threat may be politically motivated but markets can't ignore the headline risk,' said Haris Khurshid, chief investment officer at Karobaar Capital. 'This kind of tariff rhetoric, even if it never materializes, chips away at
investor confidence
. You can't run a $3 trillion company with a trade grenade hanging overhead.'
Apple is the worst-performing Magnificent Seven stock this year, and its 2025 drop of 22% stands in stark contrast to the 0.5% decline of the Nasdaq 100 Index. The stock has broken under key moving averages, but isn't yet at the level that would indicate oversold conditions, based on its 14-day relative strength index. The CBOE Apple VIX, which tracks a market estimate of future volatility for the stock, jumped more than 30% last week.
The stock has endured political and tariff-related swings, though Friday's selloff was far milder than Apple's drop after the initial announcement of tariffs in April, when the stock underwent historic volatility, including its biggest four-day drop since October 2000.
The Trump administration subsequently walked back several of its more extreme tariff pronouncements. It exempted key categories of electronics — including smartphones and computers — from its so-called reciprocal tariffs, while the US and China agreed to temporarily lower tariffs on each other's products.
'It would be probably a surprise to most investors if this actually happens,' Matt Stucky, chief portfolio manager of equities at Northwestern Mutual Wealth Management, said. He added that Friday's move in

underscored this point: if investors believed the 25% rate will be enforced, traders likely would have sent the stock down further.
Trump's quickly evolving position was on display on Friday when, a few hours after taking aim at Apple on social media, he said the 25% tariff would apply to all foreign-made smartphones. Ironically, this could be to Apple's benefit, according to JPMorgan analyst Samik Chatterjee, who said that if all competitors in the industry face the same hurdle, 'Apple's pricing power with consumers as well as suppliers would position the company favorably relative to peers, rather than at a disadvantage.'
Still, the situation is difficult for Apple because it has few obvious recourses to appease Trump. The idea of fully domestic
iPhone manufacturing
is 'a fairy tale that is not feasible,' according to Wedbush analyst Daniel Ives. Given the complexity of Apple's supply chain — including materials, assembly, labor, and machinery — Bloomberg Intelligence estimated it would take several quarters to move iPhone assembly to the US. Last month, Bank of America calculated that iPhone costs could rise 90% or more if they were made in the US.
Apple was reportedly already considering price increases, though trying to avoid the perception they were related to tariffs, as Trump has also attacked companies that have raised prices due to the levies.
Estimates vary on how significant tariffs could be to Apple. Bloomberg Intelligence estimated they 'might cut gross margin by 300-350 bps for fiscal 2026,' while Citigroup analyst Atif Malik estimated 'about 130 bps incremental gross margin impact, or 4% incremental EPS impact in FY26.'
Wells Fargo Securities analyst Aaron Rakers is skeptical tariffs will materialize, but said Apple would have to raise prices by $250-$300 per iPhone in order to maintain gross margins. Ives at Wedbush said iPhones would cost about $3,500 if made in the US.
Analysts have been trimming their estimates on account of the uncertainty. The consensus for Apple's net 2026 earnings has dropped by 5.1% over the past three months, while the view for revenue is down 3.9 per cent over the same period.
Further cuts to estimates would have the effect of making the stock appear more expensive by shrinking the denominator in the price-to-earnings ratio. Apple currently trades around 26 times estimated earnings, above its 10-year average, and more than megacap peers that are expected to grow faster. The combination of a higher multiple and slower growth suggests a difficult setup, even outside of the tariff situation.
'We're in that ugly space because it's a bit of a no-win situation right now,' said Brian Mulberry, a client portfolio manager at Zacks Investment Management. 'There is probably a point where you can see the price becoming attractive enough for long-term investors,' but the valuation and uncertain backdrop means it isn't there yet.

Apple is exploring how its wearable devices like AirPods can double as heart rate monitors. A newly published research paper from the Apple Research team discusses the possibility of using AI-powered acoustic models to estimate heart rate from heart sound recordings. These heart rate recordings or sounds can be captured from the body using devices like AirPods. The study, titled 'Foundation Model Hidden Representations for Heart Rate Estimation from Auscultation', seeks to identify if foundation AI models trained on general audio and speech can accurately estimate heart rate from heart sounds. This non-invasive method, known as auscultation, typically involves listening to sounds produced by the heart. The idea is similar to how doctors use a stethoscope to listen to heart rate to diagnose and monitor various medical conditions. The researchers at Apple want to follow the same technique and use wearables like AirPods to capture heart sounds and use AI to measure heart rate by analysing it. Apple revealed that its researchers tested six major foundation models, including HuBERT, wav2vec2, and its own internally developed version of CLAP (Contrastive Language-Audio Pretraining), to see how well these models could pick up heartbeats from phonocardiograms — recordings of heart sounds. The research shows that even though these models weren't built for healthcare tasks, they managed to outperform traditional methods based on handcrafted audio features. 'In this work, using a publicly available phonocardiogram (PCG) dataset and a heart rate (HR) estimation model, we conduct a layer-wise investigation of six acoustic representation FMs: HuBERT, wav2vec2, wavLM, Whisper, Contrastive Language-Audio Pretraining (CLAP), and an in-house CLAP model,' Apple said in the paper published online. During the research, the Apple team used a publicly available dataset of over 20 hours of hospital-recorded heart sounds, annotated by medical experts. The team then split the audio clips into 5-second segments, with the AI analysing them to predict heart rate in beats per minute (BPM). The study revealed that mid-level layers in AI models worked best for detecting heart signals, while deeper layers—which are usually fine-tuned for speech recognition—were less effective at analysing biological sounds like heartbeats. This suggests that Apple would need to focus on specific parts of AI models rather than using them as-is for health tracking. Although the research did not reveal any plans for a commercial product, it does suggest Apple's intent to do more with its devices. Apple has already previewed the expanding possibilities of earbuds like the Beats Powerbeats Pro 2, which can offer heart rate tracking. But with AI, Apple wants its wearables to do even more. AirPods already feature high-quality microphones used for Active Noise Cancellation (ANC) and Transparency Mode, which could theoretically pick up subtle heart sounds. If Apple manages to integrate this AI-powered heart rate detection into AirPods, it could help users with passive heart rate monitoring without needing an Apple Watch and offer more advanced fitness tracking and early detection of irregularities with the heart. advertisement

The domestic equity benchmarks traded with small losses in the mid- afternoon trade as investors remained focused on the final batch of March quarter (Q4FY25) earnings, GDP data, along with US President Donald Trump's tariff developments globally. The Nifty traded below the 24,800 level. Media shares slipped after advancing for previous two consecutive trading sessions. At 14:30 IST, the barometer index, the S&P BSE Sensex, slipped 160.39 points or 0.20% to 81,472.63. The Nifty 50 index shed 55.10 points or 0.22% to 24,780.80. In the broader market, the S&P BSE Mid-Cap index shed 0.27% and the S&P BSE Small-Cap index rose 0.21%. The market breadth was negative. On the BSE, 1,782 shares rose and 2,133 shares fell. A total of 157 shares were unchanged. Buzzing Index: The Nifty Media index shed 0.62% to 1,700.40. The index rose 0.61% in past two consecutive trading sessions. Network 18 Media & Investments (down 1.62%), Sun TV Network (down 1.21%), Saregama India (down 0.87%), PVR Inox (down 0.75%), Zee Entertainment Enterprises (down 0.55%) and Nazara Technologies (down 0.28%) declined. On the other hand, Hathway Cable & Datacom (up 2.7%), Dish TV India (up 2.11%) and Tips Music (up 0.53%) added. Numbers to Track: In the foreign exchange market, the rupee edged lower against the dollar. The partially convertible rupee was hovering at 85.5900, compared with its close of 85.4825 during the previous trading session. MCX Gold futures for 5 June 2025 settlement shed 0.34% to Rs 95,066. The US Dollar index (DXY), which tracks the greenback's value against a basket of currencies, was up 0.18% to 99.53. The United States 10-year bond yield rose 0.18% to 4.432. In the commodities market, Brent crude for July 2025 settlement rose 33 cents or 0.51% to $64.48 a barrel. Stocks in Spotlight: EFC (I) jumped 4.41% after the company reported 71.7% increase in consolidated net profit to Rs 47.97 crore on a 126.4% rise in revenue from operations to Rs 211.01 crore in Q4 FY25 as compared with Q4 FY24. KNR Constructions declined 3.96% after the company's consolidated net profit tumbled 60.58% to Rs 139.24 crore on 31.03% decline in revenue from operations Q4 FY25 over Q4 FY24.
