Soccer-Union manager apologies after staff member sent off for throwing extra ball onto pitch
(Reuters) -Union Saint-Gilloise manager Sebastien Pocognoli has apologised after one of his staff members was sent off against Genk for throwing an extra ball onto the pitch which interrupted a last-minute attack, Dutch media reported on Monday.
The incident occurred deep into added time on Sunday with Union leading 2-1 in the Belgian Pro League match in Genk.
With the hosts on the attack searching for the equalizer, right back Zakaria El Ouahdi was set to receive a pass from central defender Mujaid Sadick but suddenly found another ball at his feet and stopped play.
Genk players appealed to the referee and a Union staff member was sent off, though it was not clear from video footage who threw the ball onto the field.
Union held on to win 2-1.
"It wasn't planned in any way," Pocognoli said. "We are a team that always shows the right attitude on, but also off the pitch. I went to apologise to the referee.
"Who it was? I think someone from the staff. Maybe a player. But I haven't seen the footage."
Local media reported that the Royal Belgian Football Association (RBFA) has opened up an investigation over the incident. Reuters has contacted the RBFA for comment.
"This normally only happens in amateur football," Genk midfielder Jarne Steuckers told Dutch media. "It's not because of that we lost, but this is very unprofessional. You can do a lot to get a win over the line, but not this."

Steenbergen wins world 100m freestyle to deny O'Callaghan
SINGAPORE: Defending champion Marrit Steenbergen denied Mollie O'Callaghan a sprint double at swimming's world championships on Friday as the Dutchwoman won 100m freestyle gold in Singapore. Steenbergen held off a late charge from O'Callaghan to touch the wall in 52.55sec, forcing her Australian rival to settle for second in 52.67. American Torri Huske, who withdrew from a race earlier in the week after suffering from a stomach bug, was third in 52.89. Steenbergen won world championship gold in the event in Doha last year in a field missing several big names saving themselves for the Paris Olympics. "In Doha I was like, this is crazy to win, but in this field I don't know what to feel, I'm just so happy," said the 25-year-old. Steenbergen also won bronze with the Dutch team in the women's 4x100m freestyle relay this week in Singapore. "After the relay I knew I was in good shape but I was getting more nervous through the week and tonight I was feeling it a bit," she said. "I just tried to keep my calm." Steenbergen's win denied O'Callaghan her fourth gold medal of the week and her 12th world championship career title. A win would have seen her eclipse retired great Ian Thorpe as Australia's most decorated world championship swimmer. "As I've said a thousand times, I've not had the best prep towards this," said O'Callaghan, who won the 200m freestyle title two nights earlier. "To do what I did tonight, last night and the nights before that, I am very proud." Huske picked up her second medal of the week after winning silver with the US women's 4x100m freestyle relay team. "I've never had such a roller coaster of a meet," she said. "I am really proud of that swim and that was I able to get back to kind of normal." The overwhelming majority of the United States team has been battling acute gastroenteritis.--AFP

Max Verstappen confirms Red Bull stay for 2025 F1 season
FOUR -times Formula One world champion Max Verstappen has ended speculation about a move to Mercedes next season by confirming for the first time on Thursday that he will race on with Red Bull. 'I think it's time to stop all the rumours. For me, it was always quite clear that I was staying,' the Dutch driver told reporters ahead of the Hungarian Grand Prix. 'And that was the general feeling in the team because we are always in discussion about what we could do with the car and when you're not staying you stop talking about these kind of things. And I never did.' Formula One starts a new engine era next year in a major shake-up that could change the pecking order, with Mercedes expected to lead the way while Red Bull are making their own power unit after a split with Honda. Reigning champion Verstappen has known break clauses in his contract but they have not been triggered, with the 27-year-old third in the standings at the mid-point and with two wins from 13 races. It was widely accepted in Formula One that Verstappen would be staying, with the rumour-mill already turning to a possible exit from Red Bull in 2027 with performance clauses again applying next year. Verstappen otherwise has a Red Bull contract that runs through 2028. The sacking of Christian Horner this month as Red Bull team boss was also widely seen as another step by the energy drink company to convince the sport's most sought-after driver to stay with them. 'Some people just like to stir the pot, some people just like to create drama. But, for me, it's always been quite clear,' said Verstappen. Mercedes boss Toto Wolff said last week that retaining his current lineup of George Russell and Italian Kimi Antonelli was a priority. Russell told reporters separately at the Hungaroring that he was sure to be racing for Mercedes next year but nothing would be signed until after the August break, which follows the Hungarian race. While Russell's current deal expires at the end of the year, he has been under a management contract with Mercedes since he was 16, meaning his employers are effectively negotiating with themselves. 'Conversations have started but we are now heading into the summer break,' said Russell. 'Toto and I have spoken a lot this week but we haven't spoken once about the contract because we're both trying to solve the car's performance and get the team in the right place.' - Reuterspix
