
Ab Rahaman Arsad appointed as new Johor Police Chief

JOHOR BAHRU - Bukit Aman deputy director of management (services/staffing) Comm Ab Rahaman Arsad, has been appointed as the new Johor police chief, effective today.
He takes over from Datuk M. Kumar, who now serves as the director of the Bukit Aman Criminal Investigation Department (CID). The handover-of-duties ceremony was held at the Johor police contingent, witnessed by Bukit Aman Management Department director Datuk Seri Abdul Aziz Abdul Majid.
A rank-pinning ceremony, officiated by Abdul Aziz, was also held during the event to mark Ab Rahaman's promotion to Commissioner of Police.
In his speech, Abdul Aziz extended his appreciation to Kumar for more than 18 years of dedicated and exemplary service in Johor, while expressing confidence that Ab Rahaman would continue to lead the state police force with distinction.
"I am confident that Ab Rahaman is the right candidate to lead the Johor police force and we at Bukit Aman have high expectations of his capabilities. That is our hope,' he said.
Ab Rahaman, 58, who hails from Kulai, began his policing career in 1989 and has previously served as the head of the management department in the Negri Sembilan and Kedah police contingents.
Meanwhile, Kumar, 56, who joined the force on Dec 1, 1991, and served in several key positions, including as deputy Johor police chief, expressed confidence in his successor's capabilities.
"I would like to express my appreciation to all personnel at the Johor police contingent, the state government leadership, enforcement agencies, non-governmental organisations, and media practitioners for their strong support throughout my service in Johor,' he said.
Also held during the ceremony was the handover of the Johor Contingent's Police Family Association (Perkep) chairman post from SP Shanthi to Salwah Mahdan, witnessed by Bukit Aman Management Department Perkep chairperson Datin Seri Selmiah Tuan Ibrahim. - BERNAMA

Works minister denies viral RM26mil gratuity payment letter
KUALA LUMPUR: Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has denied the authenticity of a letter dated July 28, 2025, which went viral on social media, purportedly from the ministry regarding a gratuity payment to an individual. He said that the letter was fake and was never issued by the ministry or himself. "The ministry never issued any official invitation for such a gratuity payment ceremony. As such, I advise the public not to be deceived by such documents, which clearly contain elements of fraud and impersonation," he said. Govt moots purchase of 16 new buses for FRU after fatal crash

(Bernama pic) PETALING JAYA : The home ministry has proposed the procurement of 16 new buses with a capacity of 44 passengers each for the Federal Reserve Unit (FRU) following the crash in May that claimed the lives of nine FRU personnel. Home minister Saifuddin Nasution Ismail said the buses would be used by the FRU for general use and long-distance travel. In a written parliamentary reply, Saifuddin said the ministry proposed that funds be allocated to procure the buses under the 13th Malaysia Plan. He also said the ministry has proposed customising existing FRU vehicles to ensure they fit the set safety specifications, as well as the installation of additional safety components like dash cameras. 'The police are holding discussions with various stakeholders concerning improvements to SOPs (involving the transportation of FRU personnel). 'The date of implementation of the new SOPs will be set once the procedures are finalised and approved by the police force's leadership,' he said. Nine FRU members were killed and nine others injured after the truck they were in crashed with a lorry in Teluk Intan, Perak, on May 12. Those who died were S Perumal, 44, Roslan Abd Rahim, 46, Pozli Jaudin, 41, Nurit Pandak, 34, Amiruddin Zabri, 38, Hilmi Azlan, 38, Akmal Muhamad, 35, Damarrulan Abdul Latif, 33, and Akmal Wafi Annuar, 28. The 45-year-old lorry driver, Rudi Zulkarnain Mat Radi, was charged on May 16 with nine counts of causing death by reckless driving. He claimed trial to all the charges. A preliminary report by the task force investigating the crash also found that the tipper lorry was carrying 40,960kg of gravel, exceeding the permitted limit of 24,000kg by 70.67%.

Man caught after failed snatch theft attempt in Setia Alam
SHAH ALAM: A man's attempt to snatch a necklace from a local in Setia Alam was thwarted when bystanders caught him yesterday evening. Shah Alam police chief ACP Mohd Iqbal Ibrahim said the incident occurred at 7.07 pm when the 37-year-old victim was heading to his car. The suspect, riding a motorcycle, tried to pull off the victim's necklace, but the victim fought back quickly. 'The suspect lost control and fell from his motorcycle. He tried to escape but was caught by nearby bystanders. Police later confirmed that the suspect, aged 30, owned the motorcycle but had used a fake licence plate. He is now under remand until August 7,' he said in a statement. Mohd Iqbal urged the public to remain alert and avoid being alone in isolated areas to reduce the risk of crime.
