Horrified tourists watch as bison boils to death in Yellowstone hot spring
A witness who posted photos of the incident on social media said the bison took a few steps into a shallow area before turning around and stepping out quickly. The animal then apparently paused before turning back and stepping into a deeper area, where it became trapped and was unable to free itself.
"Unfortunately, I witnessed the bison drowning in the Grand Prismatic Springs early yesterday morning. It took a few steps into a shallow area to the right of the pool, it turned around and stepped out very quickly. It stood for a moment, then turned back towards the spring and stepped into a deeper section then couldn't get out despite trying its best. I have a video of it coming up to take its last breath but it's a tough watch," Louise Howard wrote in a Facebook post with the photos.
Howard told CBS News that "as hard as it tried, it couldn't get out."
Michael Poland, the scientist-in-charge at the Yellowstone Volcano Observatory, told CBS News that while it is rare, it is not unheard of for animals to fall into hot springs. He said scientists have found skeletons at hot springs in the park. According to Poland, the bison died "very quickly" and most likely boiled to death.
"This bison carcass is basically sitting in a pool of nearly boiling water, and ... that boiling water will eat away at the organic material, the tissues, and eventually there will just be some bone," Poland said, according to NBC News.
The Grand Prismatic Spring is 300 feet wide, and its waters can reach up to 192 degrees Fahrenheit.

Underwater volcano off Oregon coast could erupt by the end of the year, researchers say, but nothing ‘looks imminent'
When it does erupt, it won't pose a threat to human life. An underwater volcano off the coast of Oregon that was forecast to erupt sometime this year doesn't look imminent, according to volcanologists who are closely monitoring it. The Axial Seamount is located about 300 miles off the coast of Oregon in the Pacific Ocean, and it's 4,900 feet below the surface of the sea along the Juan de Fuca Ridge. For comparison, its depth is about two-and-a-half times the height of One World Trade Center in New York City, which is 1,776 feet, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. It's the most active submarine volcano in the northeast Pacific. In the last 30 years that it's been monitored, three eruptions have occurred: in 1998, 2011 and 2015, according to researchers Bill Chadwick at Oregon State University and Scott Nooner at the University of North Carolina at Wilmington. 'Our forecast of an eruption at Axial Seamount by the end of the year still stands, but I have to say nothing looks imminent,' Chadwick told KOIN on Wednesday. Yahoo contacted Chadwick for an updated confirmation of this assessment and is awaiting a response. Here's what else to know about the underwater volcano. Does the underwater volcanic eruption pose a serious threat? No. Due to the Axial Seamount's great depth underwater, combined with its relatively gentle lava flow style, it doesn't pose a threat to human life, ocean travel or property, the U.S. Geological Survey says. 'For the size of eruptions we've seen in the last 20 years … if you were on top of it on a boat, you would never know it,' Chadwick previously told local media. However, the next eruption will help researchers better understand and forecast how volcanoes erupt on land. Why is it forecast to erupt this year? Inflation in an underwater volcano happens when magma accumulates below the sea floor and pushes the surface of the volcano upward, Chadwick explained at a 2024 seminar. One of the signs that an eruption of Axial Seamount might happen this year is that the volcano reached the same inflation levels from when it erupted in 2015, back in January. But as of July, 'the rate of inflation has been slowly decreasing all year,' Chadwick wrote in a blog on the OSU website that details the eruption forecast. Researchers also monitor seismic activity near the volcano through instruments and cables that extend from the U.S. coast. In June, there were more than 2,000 earthquakes recorded near Axial Seamount in a single day, which is a sign that an eruption could be imminent. Additionally, in July, the tsunami wave from the 8.8 magnitude earthquake near Russia's Kamchatka Peninsula "triggered the automated alerts we have in place to notify us when an eruption might be starting,' even though it wasn't actually an eruption, according to Chadwick's blog post. 'We can only wait and see, but nothing seems imminent at the moment since the rate of unrest keeps wavering up and down, up and down,' Chadwick writes. 'Of course, we don't really know what it will take to trigger the next eruption and exactly when that will happen. Anduril, Blue Origin to study how to transport cargo from orbit to earth for the Pentagon
Blue Origin and Anduril have landed new study contracts with the U.S. Air Force to explore how their technology, including rockets, could move military cargo around the world. The contracts under the Air Force's Rocket Cargo program are relatively small – Blue Origin's comes in at $1.37 million and Anduril's at $1 million. But they could be the first steps in revolutionizing how the Pentagon transports cargo. Study contracts like these are also a strong signal as to which players will later compete for larger-dollar funding. Anduril's contract is especially intriguing and suggests the defense startup is making forays into an entirely new business line. The two awards fall under the U.S. Air Force Research Laboratory's Rocket Experimentation for Global Agile Logistics (REGAL) program. Blue Origin did not respond to TechCrunch's request for comment, and an Anduril spokesperson directed TechCrunch to AFRL. The Air Force wants to procure these capabilities via service-type contracts, similar to how the DoD contracts commercial airlines. The aim of the REGAL program is to prove out commercial, reusable rockets, reentry systems, and cargo transportation systems to enable deliveries to remote or hard-to-reach theaters in less than an hour. While there isn't much public information about REGAL's scope of work or timeline, the requests for proposals that underly the awards contain some interesting information. Blue's contract, according to the sparse award listing, is for an analysis of how its tech could support 'point-to-point material transportation.' The listing, which can be viewed on emphasized that the container needs to work with different rocks and the study should propose a thermal protection system. Anduril's 'payload container,' as the listing calls it, should integrate multiple government-defined payloads and work across platforms. Reentry is a notoriously difficult problem to solve in spaceflight. Developing materials that can survive atmospheric reentry, and a container that doesn't completely destroy the contents involved, is a challenge. A handful of startups, like Varda Space Industries, have developed reentry capsules for in-space manufacturing, and SpaceX's Dragon capsule brings back cargo and astronauts from the ISS. But overall, the number of vendors that can deliver this capability is limited. The news of the two contracts, which haven't been reported, follows on Rocket Lab's own REGAL contract that was announced earlier this year. That contract explicitly has a flight demonstration step, though AFRL hasn't released other details on that award, like the amount. If rocket cargo services mature, the Pentagon could buy 'delivery as a service,' with massive loads riding a commercial heavy rocket and returning to Earth inside a capsule for quick offload. Long term, AFRL said the program could even include point-to-point transportation of humans.
