Google launches Android 16 with major software upgrades
The update introduces a host of new features across messaging, photos, accessibility, and security. "Android 16 lays the foundation for our new Material 3 Expressive design, with features that make Android more accessible and easy to use," the company said.
A key highlight is the addition of RCS group chat support in Google Messages, enhancing group communication with richer messaging capabilities.
Google Photos is also receiving AI-powered enhancements, including smart edit suggestions such as "erase," "move," or "reimagine" specific parts of an image, available on Android 16 and other supported versions.
Android 16 introduces several customization and accessibility improvements, along with iOS-style live notifications on the lock screen. New anti-theft and anti-scam protections have been implemented, alongside an upgraded Advanced Protection Mode to bolster user security and privacy.
Later this year, Android 16 will expand its capabilities on tablets, including desktop-style windowing support and custom keyboard shortcuts, allowing users to define hotkeys for launching apps and performing actions.
Other notable features include HDR screenshot support, adaptive refresh rates, and forced grouping for notifications, helping users manage alerts more efficiently.

South Korea delays decision on Google's request for map data exports
SEOUL (Reuters) -South Korea delayed a decision on Friday on a request from Google for permission to export map data, following U.S. pressure to address what Washington regards as a non-tariff barrier during recent trade talks, its transport ministry said. South Korea and the United States are preparing for a summit of their leaders, possibly this month, after reaching a trade deal in late July, but it was not clear whether the map issue will be discussed at the meeting. South Korea previously rejected requests from Google, whose parent is Alphabet, for permission to use map data on servers outside the country, in 2016 and 2007, citing security concerns. South Korea's Ministry of Land, Infrastructure and Transport said in a statement its National Geographic Information Institute had decided to postpone the decision for 60 days to give Google time to come up with measures that address its security concerns. Google has said there were no security concerns about its mapping data on South Korea, saying the data are publicly available and used by a number of companies, after going through a security review by a government agency. The company said, however, it is closely discussing with the South Korean government about taking any other security measures requested by the authorities, while considering plans to purchase blurred images from local partners which have been approved by the government. South Korea, whose 1950-53 war with North Korea ended without a peace treaty, argues that if it allowed such data to leave the country, the locations of military facilities and other sensitive sites could be revealed. But the U.S. said restrictions on cross-border data flows have long served as barriers to operating navigation services through Google Maps and Apple Maps, resulting in U.S. companies losing out in the South Korean market. South Korea had not made concessions on the map issue and also on further opening up agriculture, despite early and intense bilateral talks, presidential adviser Kim Yong-beom had said. Google said the lack of data restricts its Google Maps services in Korea, causing major inconveniences to foreign tourists. Late last month, Transport Minister Kim Yoon-duk said South Korea needed to be "very cautious" about granting map access, saying defence and public safety were prioritised over trade. OpenAI releases ChatGPT-5 as AI race accelerates
SAN FRANCISCO: OpenAI on Thursday released a keenly awaited new generation of its hallmark ChatGPT, touting "significant" advancements in artificial intelligence capabilities, as a global race over the technology accelerates. ChatGPT-5 is rolling out free to all users of the AI tool, which is used by nearly 700 million people weekly, OpenAI said in a briefing with journalists. Co-founder and chief executive Sam Altman touted this latest iteration as "clearly a model that is generally intelligent." "It is a significant step toward models that are really capable," he said. Altman cautioned that there is still work to be done to achieve the kind of artificial general intelligence (AGI) that thinks the way people do. "This is not a model that continuously learns as it is deployed from new things it finds, which is something that, to me, feels like it should be part of an AGI," Altman said. "But the level of capability here is a huge improvement." GPT-5 is particularly adept when it comes to AI acting as an "agent" independently tending to computer tasks, according to Michelle Pokrass of the development team. "GPT-3 felt to me like talking to a high school student -- ask a question, maybe you get a right answer, maybe you'll get something crazy," Altman said.
