This Fantastic UV Printer Has Become the Most Funded Kickstarter of All Time

Update: With just three days to go, the EufyMake E1 UV printer has become the most backed Kickstarter of all time. At the time this is being updated, it has a total of $44,257,919 in pledges. Before the E1, the highest was a Kickstarter by fantasy author Brandon Sanderson, which topped out at $1.7 million.

It reflects a strong global demand for personal creative tools that spark creativity and empower individuals," a sentiment I've seen growing across the maker space in the last few years. People are more creative than ever and want tools to help them express themselves in new and interesting ways. The E1 has all the parts needed to make that happen, with a few caveats that I speak about in my hands-on below.
Hands-on with the E1
As the resident printing expert here at CNET, I get a lot of interesting tech that comes through my testing lab. Most of the products fall into one of two creative camps: additive or subtractive. Additive products can be 3D printers like the Bambu Lab H2D that use plastic material or resin to build up a 3D model that becomes a fully 3D object in the world, or 2D printers that use ink to print on a flat medium. My best list contains paper printers, sublimation printers and apparel printers, all of which create different end results. Subtractive products like laser engravers remove material by cutting or burning to create either 3D or 2D images.
UV printers are a hybrid of 3D and 2D printers. They use CMYK (Cyan, Magenta, Yellow and Black) inks and a white resin-style ink that is cured with a UV light to build up a shallow 3D image on a hard surface. Most of them are industrial and cost several thousand, if not tens of thousands, of dollars. EufyMake, formerly AnkerMake, has launched a Kickstarter for the E1, which it is calling the "world's first personal 3D-texture UV printer." I've spent several months testing it and printed over 100 different prints, and I think I'm ready to say, this is a product that's worth buying.

While EufyMake assures me the unit it sent me is the production model, the E1 is currently on a Kickstarter campaign and at the time of writing, has made $33 million with over two weeks to go. The packaging certainly suggests this unit is a full retail product. It was packed securely in a proper printed box, at any rate. EufyMake provided some blank products for me to print on, but I've also used a dozen or so unofficial materials to further my testing, including brass coins, Lego bricks, craft knives and even my own 3D printed models.
The printer is relatively small. It's around 15 x 23 x 10 inches, so not much bigger than a laser printer if it were stood up on its front. You'll need about 32 inches of clearance to use it with the biggest plate it has, though. Like the Cricut, the E1's print area moves in and out of the machine as the print head moves left and right across the surface, so you need some clearance at the front and back. The mini flatbed is small and can be used with both doors open, but the standard bed will need them open. The other bed option is a rotary machine designed for tumblers and mugs, and, like the other beds, simply clicks into place. The printer recognizes the type of plate and adjusts your software to match.
Both the large and small beds have replaceable mats that stick to them. Much like Cricut cutting mats, these are tacky, allowing you to hold down the product you're printing on securely. These are considered consumables, and while you do get several with your initial order, know that you will need to buy more of them as you continue to use the E1. Overspray is a big issue, so if you want to reduce the amount of mats you use, green or blue painter's tape will be your friend.

Setup and installation were very quick and mostly done through the EufyMake app. This is the same app that you use for your AnkerMake/EufyMake 3D printers, which is nice. You can have all of your creative machines in one place. The app takes you through the initial setup, while the written instructions explain how to install the inks and cleaning solution. The ink installation is the simplest I have seen on these types of machines, with no manual bleeding or priming. All you need to do is make sure you put the correct cartridge in the correct slot. Simple. Each ink is 100ml, which is a good amount for the colors, though I would like to see a larger white cartridge available in the future, especially since it's the central ink used.
To build the 3D image on your surface, the E1 uses the white ink to print in layers. It can print up to 5mm thick, and if you're printing something large like a canvas, that can use a lot of white. In my testing, a metal Displate-size print with 1.5mm of 3D effect took nearly 40 ml of white ink, 40% of the entire bottle. If you were planning to start a business, you would need a large supply of white ink. Currently, they cost around $44 a bottle, so you need to think about what you're going to make if you intend to turn a profit.

What is the E1 really for?
Profit is really the main thrust of the E1, and why I can recommend you get one in specific circumstances. If you're not looking to use this as part of your existing small business or looking to start a small business off the back of this, you shouldn't get one. It's really fun to use and you'll have a blast using it, but the cost of the materials and the consumables makes it an expensive proposition if you aren't making something in return. EufyMake knows this and has said that the E1 is specifically aimed at the prosumer market.
Over the course of printing over 100 products, I tried to take measurements based on what the software says it's using. I also measured the accuracy of the software by weighing the white ink in a full cartridge, which came out to 104ml, then printing a canvas art piece that my wife had drawn. The software said the E1 would use 6.89ml of white ink, and after it had finished, my new weigh-in showed it had used 6.6ml, a little less than it had told me. This wasn't a perfectly accurate test, but I'm much happier that the software estimated high, rather than low. Running out mid-print would definitely not be cool at $44 a bottle.
The graph I made should give you an idea of the real-world applications of using the E1 in your business and how you might be able to leverage it. It's not a perfect representation. A lot of the products came from EufyMake, with no idea how much they will cost to order in bulk. Instead, I focused on how much white ink they would take to make, and therefore how many you could make per 100ml of white ink. In this way, you can at least see how much the ink will cost you.

I was able to pull better data from products that I bought myself. Challenge coins are a big thing, and in my testing of the best laser engravers, I used them on the F1 Ultra laser, carving them using depth maps, so I had several left over. These cost $20 for 10, so I knew how much every part of the process would cost.
Using some fairly basic math, I was able to figure out that you could print 131 double-sided challenge coins with one bottle of white ink -- the color use is only about 0.05ml per color -- so if you sold them for the average price of $20, your profit would be around $652. Now, that's not including your time, but for a basic cost calculation, you can see how this would be a great addition to your product lineup.

It's not just challenge coins, either. Phone cases, magnets, coasters and more can be printed for a fairly low cost and sold for a decent return. The included software also offers the added bonus of easy customization, adding another avenue to increase profit. It would be easy to make a bunch of cool things to take to a farmer's market or a convention. You could even take the printer itself and make things on the fly, as it is fairly compact and easy to move around. In fact, EufyMake suggests you make at least one thing a day to keep the print heads moisturized and reduce the amount of print head cleaning and maintenance you'll need to do.
Maintenance reduces costs
Maintenance is another outlay you'll need to consider. The cleaning fluid, which is the same price as the ink, is designed to wash and maintain the print heads, but it can only do so many washes before you'll need to replace it. There are three different wash types, from a quick flash to a deep clean that can take 15 minutes. Deep cleans are for when one of your print heads seems not to be working, while the others can be used a little more regularly. It costs about the same as the ink to replace, around $44, or you can buy one of each ink, including white and gloss, and a cleaning fluid for around $300 a pack.

It's important to note that the print head itself is also a consumable. Like hotends on a 3D printer or needles on a sewing machine, the part of the machine doing the work is subject to wear and tear. EufyMake covers the print head with a three-month warranty, and you can buy new ones for $600 each, but you should expect yours to last much longer with the right care. Like all complicated equipment, proper maintenance is key.
Camera quality issues
You'll also need to properly calibrate the machine after any major movement or maintenance cycle. If you replace the print mat, you should recalibrate the camera and do a print calibration. In fact, each mat has a cover designed to do just that before you get started. The camera will require a lot of calibrating and is my least favorite physical thing about the E1. It's really not that great.

Because the camera is static and uses a wide-angle lens to capture the plate, it is almost impossible to get the image aligned correctly the first time. No matter how many times I adjusted the pattern I wanted to print on this coin, it simply wouldn't sit dead center. There isn't even a grid on the mats or on the software, which would be an enormous help. You could align the grids and get a good idea of where things are. And, because you can't align things perfectly, you end up with a lot of overspray that ruins the printing mat.
Laser engravers have a simple solution to this issue that I wish EufyMake had thought of. They use a marking laser to highlight the outline of the thing you're trying to engrave. Once you have aligned it with the camera as best you can, you can use the marking laser to physically move the object into the correct position. The E1 also uses lasers, but they are for measuring distances for the Z-axis, so they wouldn't be able to be used for marking. I really hope they work on this issue moving forward, as this and the software are where the E1 falls down.

AI is everywhere. We all know the perils and the pitfalls, and I have spoken at length on how it could be used to help less artistic people give birth to their imagination. The EufyMake studio software uses a lot of AI features to help you create a lot of the projects, but doesn't have the more basic granular features that it really needs to excel. The lack of a measured grid, for example, is a huge oversight and a feature that should have come before the ability to make your selfies look like cats. It also lacks a lot of basic editing tools that would make the experience better. A lot of editing can be done off the app through Photoshop, for example, but if you've used software like Glowforge's or xTool's studio software, you may be disappointed in what EufyMake brings to the table.
Another example of this is the amount of white bleed when you choose the white-CMYK setting. This is designed to make the color more secure on the surface of the material, but you can see that on certain materials, it just looks bad. You should be able to adjust this on a per-design basis, but you can't. It's set in the software, and you can't change it, which could potentially cause problems with your prints. That's a running theme with the software. There are no settings at all that can be adjusted, not even a "preferences" section that's normally available in any software.

That being said, the best part of the software is the AI used to make your images 3D. AI has a tendency to distort your image when it tries to change it, but EufyMake Studio does a good job at picking out the parts of the image that can be raised for it to make sense. I would like to have something a little more manual as well, though. I want to create a stained glass effect where the color is flat and the black lines are raised, but I can't select just the black lines. It's a feature that I hope to see added very soon. This kind of software is often made fast and scrappy, then refined over the years. This is still in the Kickstarter phase, but right now it's lacking.

Most of the issues I have with the E1 are software or firmware-based. With some fine-tuning of the camera and some better editing choices in the EufyMake Studio, I think the E1 is a strong starting point for UV printing. I've had a lot of fun coming up with interesting and fun things to print, many of them unique and marketable. One of my favorite things is using the E1 to print movie posters or wallpaper onto Lego walls. The print can break apart with the bricks and would allow you to create customized wall art for people to add to their Lego collections. It really is the variety of potential designs and materials that makes the E1 worthy of your time.
If you're already making products for a shop and your order count is in the hundreds, then the E1 shouldn't be your only UV printer. Invest in something larger that can help you with bulk orders. But as a supplement to your other work, it's going to be a great choice. If you're already 3D printing fun products, making cool Cricut designs or laser engraving, and you want to diversify your product catalogue, then the E1 is a creative way to do that on a tighter budget than a full-scale upgrade to a large UV printer. The Kickstarter campaign is nearly over, but there is still time to get involved.

Residents say Waymo robotaxis are driving them mad

It's nearing midnight as the young man scurries through a dark alley. He wears a mask and overalls and is armed with a roll of duct tape. As he nears his target – a driverless robot taxi – he tears off some tape to disable the futuristic car's sensors. 'We just want the Waymos to stop beeping at night,' he says. 'They're really disturbing us. They're disturbing our neighbors.' The man and others call themselves 'stackers,' and most nights you'll find them, faces masked from security cameras, on a mission. They stand in the way of robotaxis, so the cars are forced to line up in a stack in an alley and can't access two charging lots near downtown Santa Monica that Waymo opened in January, with little fanfare and apparently zero prior public awareness. 'We'll try lasering the next one,' one stacker says to another. 'We're just running some routine experiments to see what it takes to properly stack a Waymo.' Waymo — owned by Google's parent company Alphabet — now has about 300 robotaxis roaming the streets of Los Angeles County. They've become very popular with riders, but very unpopular with some residents who say human beings are kept awake at night by the robots' honking, flashing lights and back-up beeps, as well as the general hubbub generated by the robots' human attendants, who plug them in to charge and vacuum them between rides. 'When they began operating the lots, it was by complete surprise and all of us stopped sleeping,' says the original stacker, who goes by the handle Stacker One. He asked us not to use his real name. 'Beep, beep, beep all night long,' says Stacker One, who says he now hears the back-up noises in his head even when he's far away from his Santa Monica home. 'Like some of the other neighbors reported, I've had like phantom beeps during my drowsy days.' Waymo has tried, and so far failed, to get a restraining order against Stacker One. The stacking continues. Santa Monica officials say the back-up beeping isn't loud enough to violate the city's noise ordinance. But Stacker One points to another local law saying there can be no 'business support operations' between the hours of 11 p.m. and 6 a.m. within 100 feet of a residence. 'And there's no mention of an exception that says if you get a robot to yell for you, you're allowed to do that at night,' he says. In the face of complaints, Waymo says it has bought quieter vacuums for the humans who clean the robotaxis, limited the speed they drive in the alleys to 10 mph and limited the late-night use of the lot that was drawing the most complaints. The company has also planted some bamboo, hoping to muffle the noise of both the robotaxis and their human attendants. 'We strive to be good neighbors,' a Waymo spokesperson told CNN. 'We are in ongoing conversation with the city's Department of Transportation and are actively working with the agency as we explore and implement mitigations that address neighbors' concerns.' But the lots continue to operate, and the robots continue to beep when they back up. 'They've not done enough,' says Nancy Taylor, a long-time local who likens the nighttime disturbance to a Las Vegas light show. 'In fact, last night it was worse.' She now sleeps with a white noise machine, and behind newly installed blackout drapes. This Waymo war in Santa Monica is an example of how humans are still trying to figure out how to live alongside and legislate technology in this nascent age of artificial intelligence. The first issue: who regulates what when it comes to new, revolutionary inventions like motor vehicles that aren't driven by humans? A spokesperson for Santa Monica told me: 'The city has no jurisdiction to regulate Waymo's operations, as autonomous vehicle/robotaxi services are exclusively permitted in California by the California Public Utilities Commission and the Department of Motor Vehicles.' The Public Utilities Commission say they only handle passenger safety. And the DMV referred us back to Waymo and local law enforcement. The back-up beeping is the main issue for people who live around the lots in Santa Monica. And that is a stipulation of federal law: all autonomous electric vehicles — just like large delivery trucks — must beep when they're backing up for the safety of the pedestrians around them. One exasperated and under-slept local questioned the need: pointing out that robots can see just as clearly when they're going backwards as forwards, that they're not piloted by a human straining to look over their shoulder, and they're programmed not to hit any human who might walk in their way. With driverless cars spreading across the nation, some laws will need to be tweaked. In New York State, for example, the law says a driver must have at least one hand on the steering wheel at all times. An AI algorithm, of course, doesn't have a hand. As we were wrapping up chatting to Stacker One on a recent sunny afternoon in Santa Monica, we saw Waymos gathering, gridlocked around the gate of the already overflowing charging lot. A Santa Monica Police Department parking enforcement officer was frantically printing out parking tickets and slipping them under the robots' windshield wipers. The offence: parked in an alley without a driver behind the wheel. If there were human drivers inside, she couldn't give the cars a parking ticket. She can give them to robots. But a parking ticket is, right now, the only ticket a cop can give to a Waymo. Robots, under current California law, can't get traffic tickets. State legislators are currently mulling a bill that would, among other things, 'Require the individual car violating the law to be assessed fines and points in the same manner as a human driver.' But would a $300 ticket be as strong a disincentive to a corporation that owns a robot as it is to a human driver who is paying out of their own, much smaller pocket? 'The solution is to treat these cars like they're cars,' says Grayson Small, a musician who lives on an alley that leads to the Waymo lots. He's too far away to be bothered by the noise but worries about safety. 'You can watch it even now,' he said, pointing to a Waymo inching into a crosswalk. 'It didn't stop at all at the stop sign! It's rolling!' Helping policymakers and the public understand the challenges that are coming is the job of Hamid Ekbia, director of the Autonomous Systems Policy Institute and a professor at Syracuse University. 'The public should be involved in conversations before the fact, before these technologies are let loose,' he says. 'All AI technologies should go through this process.' Residents say public consultation has not happened. At least not in Santa Monica, at least not regarding Waymo. 'I asked if I could come to their city council meeting to ask questions,' Taylor tells CNN. 'They said, 'Oh they have a waiver, there's not going to be a city council meeting.'' And there wasn't. 'Many of us have also appealed to each relevant department of the city,' says Stacker One. 'We didn't immediately engage in protests, constitutionally protected activity. That was not our first step.' Ekbia worries that other new AI technologies are not visible, so the public can't stand in front of them to protest. 'This is just the tip of the iceberg,' he says of the Waymo standoffs. 'People could react, respond, because they can see it, and they can hear it. There are going to be systems where the effects, the impacts are not going to be visible. So we better do something before it's too late. Even if it is at the expense of slowing things down. You know, what's the rush?' 'People need to care about people,' says Stacker One. 'Government works for the people … and not for something else.' Small, the musician, says: 'Doing things that we've never been able to do in the past is great.' However, he's anxious he'll get run over by a robot when taking his trash out to the alley. 'But if it comes at the expense of humanity and human happiness and joy and being able to live life and not being inconvenienced constantly: what's the point?'

They lean on mental models—simple frameworks that turn complex situations into clear decisions. Here are five mental models I've found CISOs can immediately use to sharpen their decision making: 1. Pre-Mortem And Pre-Parade Work backward from outcomes. In a pre-mortem, imagine your security strategy has failed spectacularly. Was it a breach? Budget cuts? A leadership shake-up? Identify what specifically went wrong in these scenarios: Did patching cadence falter while you addressed other priorities? Did your boardroom lose confidence in your abilities? Why? Now proactively address those issues and inoculate yourself. Pre-mortems can help you and your teams find blind spots before reality does it for you. Don't stop at imagining worst-case scenarios; imagine your wins, too. A pre-parade involves imagining great success—perhaps you've just been promoted, or your team successfully shortened the time it takes your organization to detect a cybersecurity incident. Maybe you and your team are surpassing your vulnerability management goals. What did you do right? Which teams collaborated seamlessly, and what steps did it take to get there? Identify the key components of success and break it down into specific steps you need to take over the next 10, 30, 60 and 90 days to make that vision a reality. 2. 5x5x5 Experimentation If you knew precisely what would work, you'd already be doing it. Good ideas and bad ideas can look very similar in the beginning, and you can't tell them apart until you test them. The 5x5x5 framework by Mike Schrage is a fast, effective way to experiment without risk. It's radically simple and, if done right, it could have an immediate and profound effect on your team's direction. Start by launching experiments that meet three requirements: 1. Five people 2. $5,000 3. Five days Instead of overanalyzing or running 100 miles per hour in the wrong direction, test quickly and incrementally. If your IT team isn't fixing vulnerabilities fast enough, try five simple, testable solutions within a week. Offer small bonuses or alert management when tickets exceed the service level agreement (SLA). Focus on speed, learning and iteration—not perfection. 3. Local Maximum Versus Global Maximum Excelling as a CISO means more than just working toward your local maximum (in this case, securing the organization). You must also ask how you can deliver a global maximum: broader business value. Think like a CEO and do both. Can you create a security trust center to streamline your sales team and security contract reviews? You could make your security ratings a selling point for consumers, not just a metric. Could automating third-party risk reviews reduce costs? Good CISOs protect business, but great CISOs grow it. If you're not tying security to revenue generation, customer trust or speed of execution, you're likely thinking too small. 4. Semaphore (Red/Yellow/Green) Parallel key performance indicators (KPIs) and objective measures to the colors of traffic lights to understand your true progress on security metrics. Too many teams live in the land of "all green," where everything is fine. But that's not visibility—that's denial. Encourage your teams to highlight areas for improvement that may fall in the yellow or red categories to stress-test your current approach. Quantify security decisions using clear metrics for every program, from access reviews to vulnerability management. Clearly identify costs, risk reduction and improvement over time. Security ratings can serve as a useful barometer for benchmarking against your industry peers—and can help highlight when an "all green" assessment is masking risk. 5. Domino Effect Prevention The domino effect prevention model suggests accidents result from interconnected events, each like a falling domino that sets off the next. Remove one domino, and you prevent the cascade before it even begins. To make this framework work, be proactive and resilient. Deploy an enterprise secure browser to stop phishing at the source, implement supply chain detection and response (SCDR) to continuously monitor vendors for security risks and invest in endpoint protection solutions like CrowdStrike or SentinelOne. Focus on stopping threats before they trigger the chain reaction. Don't Wait For Checkmate Leadership in cybersecurity is about thinking clearly under pressure and planning to prevent a crisis before it hits. These models can help you cut through the noise and get razor-sharp on where you stand and where you need to be. When I became CISO at Gilt Groupe, I ran a pre-mortem and asked myself a blunt question: What would get me fired? The answer was clear—a breach that compromised credit card data and cost us our PCI DSS compliance, threatening both our reputation and our ability to process payments. That fear pushed us to redesign our entire architecture, isolating payment data in a hardened, bulletproof environment. We also implemented layered encryption so that no single person and no single point of failure could unlock access. That kind of clarity—seeing the worst-case scenario and planning backward from it—forced us to confront the unimaginable and design for it. Without that mindset, we would've never built such a resilient architecture. Just as elite chess players might recognize signs that an opponent is preparing an attack on their king and reposition their pieces in advance, cybersecurity leaders must proactively identify and eliminate blind spots before they spiral out of control.
