Ukrainian lions to start journey to UK sanctuary
After almost 10 months, four lions rescued from Ukraine are set to begin the journey to their new home in the UK.
On Thursday, Rori, Amani, Lira and Vanda will set off from their temporary homes in Belgium to The Big Cat Sanctuary in Smarden, Kent.
They will be reunited with Yuna, who was also rescued and arrived at the site in August.
Cam Whitnall, managing director of the sanctuary, said: "It has been an incredibly challenging journey, but we never lost sight of our mission; to give these magnificent lions the safe and secure future they deserve."
The lions will be collected by a team from the sanctuary before heading back through France and then to the UK by ferry with the Crossborder Animal Services.
The journey is expected to take about 12 hours with the lions due to arrive on Friday.
Mr Whitnall said: "Seeing Yuna reunited with Rori, Amani, Lira and Vanda will be an emotional and rewarding milestone for the team and our supporters."
When Yuna arrived in Kent in 2024, she was suffering from shell shock after debris from a missile attack landed 300m (984ft) from her small enclosure in Kyiv.
Vanda is also thought to have been kept in an apartment for five or six months without any outdoor access or sunlight, while Rori was confined to a private menagerie and also had trauma from the war.
The sanctuary had raised more than £500,000 to cover transport, veterinary treatments and the construction of the lion rescue centre.

Primary school to extend to house extra pupils
A primary school has been granted permission to build extensions to accommodate 119 extra pupils. Five new classrooms will be built at Beaconside C of E Primary in Penrith, Cumbria, despite concerns regarding the number of available staff car parking spaces and the increase in traffic at normal school drop-off and pick-up times. However Amy Holliman, from Westmorland and Furness Council, told a meeting the additional school places would be phased in over a number of years. The application, which came from the council and also included plans for a staffroom and landscaping, was passed contrary to the recommendation of Penrith Town Council, which also raised objections. It was worried about public transport provision as buses did not run at times corresponding with start and end of the school day. But councillors were told the school was committed to supporting sustainable transport, with fewer children being driven to school, according to the Local Democracy Reporting Service. Holliman said funding would come from cash given as part of a separate planning agreement and described the development as helping to "futureproof Penrith" in terms of more school places. Addressing environmental concerns which included the possibility of asbestos being found, she confirmed the work would not be carried out when the pupils were at school. Glacier High grads receive Montana Seal of Biliteracy for third year
Jun. 12—Eighteen Glacier High School graduates received the Montana Seals of Biliteracy on their diplomas. This is the third year Glacier has recognized students through the state seal program, which was adopted by the Montana Board of Education in 2021 to recognize students who demonstrate proficiency in two or more languages during their high school years. This year's recipients received seals in Spanish, French and Vietnamese. One grad, Daniel Onyshchuk, received two seals, the gold seal in Ukrainian and a platinum seal in Russian. The platinum seal is awarded to those students who have achieved the highest possible level of proficiency that the state recognizes. Spanish seal recipients are Carl Bitney, Kennady Garvin, Isaac Haynes, Wyatt Jensen, Charlotte Osler, Grace Pickering, Cielo Sallee, Emmery Schmidt, Shae Warner and Aidan Zlogar. French seal recipients are Coralynn Buehner, Andrew Crane, Elias Holly, Maya Kinkaid, Gabriel Luehr and Max Waverek. The Vietnamese seal recipient was Kim Huynh. In addition to the diploma seals, the accomplishment will be reflected in their high school transcripts. Students were also honored in April at the International Languages Recognition ceremony with a pin bearing the official seal from the Montana Board of Public Education. During the 2024-25 school year, 92 sophomores, juniors and seniors tested in pursuit of the seal. While students may test in the three languages offered at Glacier High School, students may also test in a language that they feel they can demonstrate proficiency in, such as a language spoken at home. To qualify for a gold or platinum seal, students must reach a certain proficiency level in writing, speaking, reading and listening in addition to meeting state graduation requirements. "Mastering more than one language is vital for our students' success in today's interconnected world. These awards recognize not only their proficiency in two or more languages but also their understanding of a broader world and their place within it," said Stephanie Hill, French teacher and international languages activities coordinator.
