Islanders place Mathew Barzal on IR with lower body injury
NEW YORK (AP) — The New York Islanders placed Mathew Barzal on injured reserve on Tuesday with a lower body injury.
Barzal, who missed 21 days earlier this season with an upper body injury, was hurt in the third period of the Islanders' overtime win at Tampa Bay on Saturday. He left in the final minute of regulation after taking a shot by the Lightning's Darren Raddysh off his left leg.
Barzal has six goals and 14 assists in 30 games this season.
The Islanders began the day in 11th place in the Eastern Conference, four points out of a wild-card spot.

Injured All Blacks Tuipulotu, Lienert-Brown to miss 2nd Rugby Championship test in Argentina
WELLINGTON, New Zealand (AP) — Injuries to lock Patrick Tuipulotu and center Anton Lienert-Brown will force changes to New Zealand's lineup for the second Rugby Championship test against Argentina at Buenos Aires. Both players started on the bench in the first test in Cordoba, where the All Blacks won 41-24. Tuipulotu made an impact when he entered the test in the second half but Lienert-Brown ended the match in the sin-bin after a clash of heads. New Zealand head coach Scott Robertson said Tuipulotu had a head injury and was taken to a hospital after the match. His involvement in the remainder of the Rugby Championship is in doubt. Lienert-Brown also sustained a head knock when he collided with Argentina center Santiago Chocobares. Robertson said Tuipulotu had been unfortunate in a tough run with injuries. 'His value on and off the field is a great presence, he makes great decisions, his lineout calling is invaluable,' Robertson said. "We've got (replacement) options. We've got Josh Lord here, Samipeni (Finau) can play No. 6 and cover lock. We've got the depth.' Quinn Tupaea and Timoci Tavatavanawai provide cover at center in the All Blacks squad. Robertson confirmed backrower Wallace Sititi and prop Tamaiti Williams will be available for the second test after recovering from injuries. 'The load on Tamaiti and the running meters for Wallace have been really critical," he said. "Obviously they've got managed minutes and aren't going to go 80. I mean they could, but that's not optimal when they first come back. But they're fit and healthy.' ___

Florida QB DJ Lagway takes another step toward returning from a strained left calf
GAINESVILLE, Fla. (AP) — Florida quarterback DJ Lagway took team repetitions Monday for the first time since training camp began, a promising sign for the 15th-ranked Gators as they start ramping up for their season opener. Although still wearing a noncontact jersey, Lagway stepped on the field for 11-on-11 drills for the first time since straining his left calf while running with teammates in July. The sophomore had been 'modified' in practice for three weeks, limited to throwing mostly on the side and in individual drills. It was the latest injury for the Heisman Trophy hopeful who missed spring practice with a shoulder injury after undergoing sports hernia surgery. 'He's feeling much better, and he's moving around well,' Napier said following practice Monday. Florida's star player also was limited last fall with shoulder soreness and slowed in November because of a strained left hamstring. The Gators, who won their final four games last season, open the season Aug. 30 against Long Island University. Lagway completed 60% of his passes for 1,915 yards, with 12 touchdowns and nine interceptions in 2024. He took over the starting role after Graham Mertz tore a knee ligament at Tennessee in October. The Gators have little experience behind Lagway, with former Yale transfer Aidan Warner, freshman Tramell Jones Jr. and college journeyman Harrison Bailey competing for the backup role. 'It's still very much a battle," Napier said. "I wish I had more clarity, but I don't. So we'll continue to work with that group this week, and the closer we'll get (to the opener), the more clarity we'll have. So still nothing clear cut.' ___

F1 series leader Oscar Piastri gets his own grandstand at the Australian Grand Prix
MELBOURNE, Australia (AP) — Formula 1 championship leader Oscar Piastri will be able to zoom past his own grandstand in next year's Australian Grand Prix at Melbourne's Albert Park. The Australian GP announced late Monday that the Piastri Grandstand would be located on the main straight, opposite pit lane. The 24-year-old Piastri, born and raised in Melbourne, leads the F1 championship this year with with 14 of the 24 races completed. He placed second to his McLaren teammate Lando Norris at the Hungarian Grand Prix on Aug. 3. Piastri will join a number of other Australian drivers who have a grandstand named for them, including Jack Brabham, Alan Jones, Daniel Ricciardo and Mark Webber. 'It feels very surreal, and I never thought this would happen but the support is incredible and I can't wait to see it all come together next March," Piastri said. 'Seeing all the fans in my own grandstand directly opposite the McLaren garage is going to be an amazing experience and I'm really looking forward to feeling the energy and the atmosphere.' Piastri leads the F1 standings with 284 points with 12 podium finishes so far this season. He is followed by Norris with 275 points, also from 12 podiums. Defending champion Max Verstappen is third on 187 points for Red Bull, George Russell in his Mercedes is fourth on 172 and Ferrari's Charles Leclerc rounds out the top five with 151 points. The Australian GP will be held March 8, 2026. ___
