
Homefires burning: how a cache of passionate love letters shows the second world war on two fronts

Matthew is an academic writing a book about an earlier generation of Fays, Frank and Willie, the actors who co-founded Dublin's Abbey theatre with WB Yeats. Frank was Gerard's father, so when lockdown happened we decided to tackle the correspondence, to see if there was any useful information for Matthew's book. We discovered so much more.
Called up to fight in 1940 at the age of 26, Gerard Fay joined the army as an ordinary soldier while his wife Alice – or 'Loll', short for Lollipop – remained in the north of England. Matthew and I used datable events, both domestic and global, to order the letters, and a story began to unfold of Gerard's rise through the ranks, his service on D-Day and subsequent wounding, and Loll's life on the home front.
Loll, a former teacher, was evacuated from Manchester and went to live with various relatives in cramped conditions with their toddler Stephen and, later, baby Elizabeth. Rain poured through the ceilings and there were mice in the drawers. Making nutritious meals during rationing was a constant challenge and she worried about measles, whooping cough and her son's education. Stephen dirtied his pants and lost clogs and caps. But Loll was a make-do-and-mend expert and avid knitter. She loved fashion and hoped for enough clothing coupons to buy a non-utility suit for a wartime wedding.
Alongside his basic training, which took place all over the UK, Gerard found himself representing soldiers at courts martial, censoring letters, giving lectures on current affairs to the troops, and even writing a precis of the Beveridge report. He met Polish, Canadian and American soldiers and there were endless schemes where he ran for miles, fell off motorbikes, slept under hedges and wished he had a leather waistcoat to keep him dry. He laughed at the absurdities of army life and continued to write for the Guardian under the pseudonym 'Infantryman'.
What is most striking is the modern quality of their relationship. Loll wrote openly about her depression, they quarrelled by letter, they discussed their sex life. They fantasised about what they would do when Gerard was home on leave, discussed the pros and cons of contraceptive methods, and worried that they had been careless and that baby number three was on the way.
Throughout the four years they were apart, the couple nourished their relationship with lively debate of novels such as Aldous Huxley's Point Counter Point, jokes about Gerard's passion for Ginger Rogers, accounts of trips to cafes, pubs, concerts, dances and 'the flicks', and gossip about family and friends. Gerard and Loll were bound by their social conscience too – they hoped for class equality after the war, and Loll pledged to write to her MP about the injustice of family allowance being paid to fathers not mothers.
The intimate letters give valuable insight into what life was like for ordinary men and women during the war. Many wartime letters and diaries exist, but this dual correspondence is unusual as it reveals both sides of a family story. Matthew and I knew we had something special on our hands and began to publish the correspondence. Then a trip to the theatre took us in a new direction.
Last June we caught Red Sky at Sunrise, the brilliant Laurie Lee production starring Anton Lesser and Charlie Hamblett, who appears in Netflix's Missing You. I immediately thought that a reading of our letters by two young actors, underscored by an onstage orchestra, would be a powerful way to mark the 80th anniversary of VE Day.
I am delighted that this is now a reality. I had already set my heart on Charlie to portray Gerard and was so pleased when Daisy Waterstone, who plays Margo in ITV's The Durrells, took the role of Loll. The music, arranged and performed by Le Page Ensemble, will be both 1940s and classical. Dear Loll: A Wartime Marriage in Letters premieres at Wilton's Music Hall in London this month, and the plan is to take it to theatres and festivals around the UK.
Matthew and I have written the script and the scene is set. We publish the next batch of letters (1941-42) this month, with a final edition (1943-44) in September. The words of the Fays bear witness to the consequences of conflict, not just in terms of the bloodshed but also in the dismantling of day-to-day life, and it is imperative that their story is told.

Sharing a video online, Lucija created quite a stir with her post, which has raked in over 6.9million views on TikTok. She listed "things in American supermarkets that would put Europeans into coma". Bread Lucija was shocked to learn was 'normal' bread looks like in US supermarkets as she found endless rows of burger buns. Typically, American families buy bread which lasts a longer time, rather than a fresh loaf like in many European stores. The bread sold in the US tends to have higher levels of added sugar, preservatives, and dough conditioners, particularly when compared to bread sold in the UK. These ingredients are used to extend shelf life and enhance sweetness. Our sister site, Daily Express, previously reported that in an investigation is was discovered that a standard-sized loaf of Warburtons contains 17g of sugar, whereas the same-sized loaf of Wonder bread packs a staggering 50g of sugar. "USA, the land of sugar and additives," commented one individual on the post. "American bread is anything but normal," wrote another. Size of portions Lucija could not get over how big a bag of popcorn is in supermarkets - or the unique flavours like cheddar cheese flavoured popcorn. "Cheddar cheese popcorn... I feel sick," commented one individual. She was also gobsmacked by a "lifetime supply" of Vaseline in a giant tub that is bigger than her hand. One American pointed out: "US is a big country everything is far each other unless you live in the city. They don't like to go out every time to go to the store. They like to store food that last. Weeks or months that's why they sell it big portion." Another agreed and shared: "The root cultural difference is that America is too damn big. for most people, grocery store is too far away. European countries smaller, grocery stores are closer. Europeans more likely (or more capable of) going grocery multiple times/week. Americans want to go once a week or less." "When people buy food to last a week, not a singular meal," said another. One other insisted: "Oh come on Balkan families would be excited to use products with that size." Cookie-flavoured bath products Lucija was shocked after she spotted the Dove Crumbl cookie flavoured bath and shower products she spotted in supermarkets. "I have no words for this one," she said. Earlier this year the Crumbl company, which has become one of the fastest selling dessert chains in the US, collaborated with Dove to roll out dessert-scented body washes, hand washes, and body scrubs. The three scents are Confetti Cake, Lemon Glaze, and Strawberry Crumb Cake. "What/s wrong with the Dove one? It's just a selection of scents," added another. "The Dove is the greatest of all time, I want that in Europe," insisted another. Bright orange Fanta "ORANGE Fanta," wrote Lucija in her baffled post. There's nothing like tucking into a cold Fanta on a warm day, but in many European countries, the colour of the treat looks a lot different to other continents. While in the UK and other European countries, it looks light a deep yellow or light orange, in the US it is a bright and bold orange colour. The colour varies because of the ingredients used and regulations. One US-based Redditor shared their experience drinking the fizzy beverage in Europe, explaining the colour difference was due to different ingredients and varying levels of sugar content. "Fanta in Italy has no dyes or artificial flavours," they wrote, alongside a photo of the pale yellow drink They added: "Slightly less sugary and a bit more tangy. It's the same soda only by name." One other commented: "You're so right about everything but I will not accept Fanta slander. Fanta in Europe is just sparkling orange juice." Another shared: "I'm from the Maldives and the Fanta here has the same neon orange colon, isn't it supposed to be like that?" "I am from an African country and orange Fanta is so nice but once you move to a European country their Fanta is just disgusting," another insisted. Skittles drinks Lucija was shocked to see what she has dubbed "radioactive soda" after she found Skittles drinks on the shelves of US supermarkets. She found a purple, red and green version of the beverage. Pre-made hard boiled eggs Lucija could not believe her eyes as she saw 12 hard boiled eggs in a sealed plastic, grab-and-go bag. "Just ew," she wrote. "Hard boiled eggs? Can't you just boil them by yourself?" commented one confused individual. Another shocked person said: "HARD BOILED EGGS IN A BAG!? I wonder how it smells when you open that hard boiled bag."

Moray woman who was nearly kidnapped and held for ransom left unfazed by 90th birthday flight
A Moray woman was was nearly kidnapped in the Middle East had a 90th birthday to remember today, as she got to fly a plane. Rosie Hales-Tooke, who has lived in Elgin for the past 30 years, dusted off her private pilot's licence (PPL) for a birthday fly. She flew a two-seater plane from Highland Aviation, which is located at Inverness Airport, however, this is not a surprise from the 90-year-old as she has led a very interesting life It was whilst living in Lebanon in the 1970s for three years that she was at the centre of a kidnapping attempt. Her husband worked for American publishing firm in Beirut and she was forced to flee overnight after he tipped off that should we be taken and held for ransom. She told The P&J: 'I was driven up to the Syria border and at nighttime we had to get out and walk over to the border. 'It was very, very scary and it was dark. I've never been back to the Middle East since. 'I think I was incredibly luck to get away from that.' For today's flight, a co-pilot came along for the ride too. 'It was brilliant,' she said, adding: 'It turned out to be a very nice day to fly as well.' Mrs Hales-Tooke gained her PPL over 50 years ago and the Elgin resident was impressed with Highland Aviation. 'They were really good, really nice and were super' she said. 'It's small and it's lovely. 'I wanted to take it home with me it's so nice.' Mrs Hales-Tooke celebrated her special day with daughter Lucy, 47, and her rescue dog Molly, both who came to the airfield with her. For a birthday a 'couple of years ago', flew from Lossiemouth. And despite reaching nine decades and having survived cancer, she is still active and volunteers for both the Red Cross and the Royal Air Forces Association. At the age of 82 she received her Institute of Advanced Motorists certificate and in her 80s she walked through fire at an event hosted by Tony Robbins. 'I think it's just being interested in everything.' Encouraging people to exercise, she said: 'You do need to keep going because if you don't it all seizes up.'

D-Day veteran celebrates 100th birthday at regimental museum
Jim Glennie turned 100 on Tuesday and a number of his family and friends gathered at The Gordon Highlanders Museum where he volunteers. Mr Glennie met the King earlier this year when he toured the Aberdeen museum, with Charles praising him as a 'great example to us all'. As an 18-year-old private, he was part of the invasion force which landed at Sword Beach on D-Day. He was later wounded in action and taken prisoner, spending the remainder of the war in Stalag IV-B. He and other soldiers made their own way back to Allied lines when their German guards deserted them as the Russians approached from the east. When Mr Glennie returned to Turriff in Aberdeenshire after the war, he became a welder. France has awarded him the Legion d'Honneur and earlier this year he was awarded the British Empire Medal in the King's Honours list. Friends and family gathered at the museum on Tuesday to celebrate, singing 'happy birthday' to the veteran. He was formally presented with his British Empire Medal by Aberdeen's Lord-Lieutenant, who is also the city's Lord Provost, David Cameron. The former soldier had earlier received his message from the King. John McLeish, chief executive of the The Gordon Highlanders Museum, said Mr Glennie was in good spirits. He told the PA news agency: 'Jim Glennie has volunteered at The Gordon Highlanders Museum for over 30 years. 'His military service is well documented but less well-known is the commitment and enthusiasm he brings to his volunteer role every Tuesday, week in week out. 'He is an important member of our team and, at the age of 100, his personality and generosity of spirit add to the wonderful camaraderie exhibited by team members. 'Watching Jim engaging with museum visitors is a sight to behold. He makes a regular museum visit very special indeed and, ultimately, he makes people smile! 'There were lots of smiles at the Museum today as we celebrated Jim's 100th birthday.' Charles toured the regimental museum in January, and upon seeing the King, Mr Glennie greeted him cheerfully and said 'long time no see!' The King told him about a portrait of Mr Glennie he had been shown at the museum, saying 'it looked terrific' and promising to send him a message when he turns 100 in August. The King said: 'You're a great example to us all, if I may say so, you really are.'
