Dutch footballer Promes extradited over cocaine smuggling case
A Dutch court sentenced the former winger in February 2024 to six years behind bars, finding him guilty of helping to smuggle 1,363 kilogrammes (3,000 pounds) of cocaine from Brazil in 2020.
In a separate case, the 33-year-old had already been sentenced to 18 months in prison and ordered to pay compensation for stabbing his cousin over a stolen necklace.
An appeal is ongoing in both cases.
A spokeswoman for prosecutors confirmed to AFP local media reports that Promes was on his way to the Netherlands after the extradition.
Promes was arrested in Dubai in March 2024 but Dutch prosecutors said that was for a local offence unrelated to the cases in the Netherlands.
He won 50 caps for the Netherlands, scoring seven goals, and was part of the side that lost to the Czech Republic in the last 16 of the Euro 2020 championships, which was played in 2021 due to Covid.
He has not worn the orange jersey since.
In 2019, Promes joined Dutch giants Ajax in Amsterdam, after a 15-million-euro ($17.2 million) transfer from Spanish La Liga outfit Sevilla.
In 2021, he left the Dutch capital for Moscow and has played for Spartak ever since, following a previous stint from 2014-2018, during which he was named Russia's footballer of the year.

Iran missile barrage leaves 19 injured in Israel's Haifa: hospital
Iran has been firing daily missile salvos at Israel for the past week, since a wide-ranging Israeli attack on the Islamic Republic's nuclear installations and military bases triggered war. At least one projectile appeared to evade Israel's air defences, slamming into an area by the docks of Haifa where it damaged a building and blew out windows, littering the nearby ground with rubble, AFP images showed. A spokesman for the city's Rambam hospital said 19 people had been injured, with one in a serious condition. Earlier, Israel's Magen David Adom rescue service reported two people had been injured by falling shrapnel after the attack but did not specify the location. Israeli President Isaac Herzog said in a statement that Haifa's Al-Jarina mosque "was struck by an Iranian missile, injuring Muslim clerics and worshippers at prayer". Foreign Minister Gideon Saar later shared a similar message on social media, adding that "the Iranian regime is targeting Muslim, Christian and Jewish civilians, as well as civilian sites. These are war crimes." A military official said that "approximately 20 missiles were launched towards Israel" in the latest Iranian salvo. Around 20 minutes after the air raid sirens were activated, the army released a statement saying people were allowed to leave bomb shelters. Earlier Friday, sirens rang out in parts of the country following another Iranian missile launch. AFP footage showed police operating in the southern Israeli city of Beersheba, alongside emergency response teams and bomb disposal expert. Security forces there inspected a crater near residential buildings, where the wreckage of charred cars lay below the mangled metal of destroyed balconies. The Soroka Hospital in the city was struck on Thursday, injuring 40 people. Israel, saying Iran was on the verge of developing nuclear weapons, launched a massive wave of strikes on June 13, triggering an immediate retaliation from Tehran. Residential areas in both countries have suffered, while Israel and Iran have traded accusations of targeting civilians. At least 25 people have been killed in Israel by Iranian missile strikes, according to authorities.

Liverpool agree deal for Bournemouth's Kerkez: reports
Kerkez is due to travel to Merseyside for a medical before completing his move to the Premier League champions. The 21-year-old caught Liverpool's eye last season with his fine form for Bournemouth, including two goals and five assists in 38 Premier League appearances. Liverpool sporting director Richard Hughes brought Kerkez to Bournemouth from AZ Alkmaar during his time at the Vitality Stadium. Serbia-born Kerkez began his career at Hungarian outfit Gyor before moving to AC Milan, where he failed to make an appearance for the Serie A club. He joined Dutch side AZ Alkmaar in 2022, arriving in the Premier League with Bournemouth a year later. Kerkez's impending arrival at Anfield raises questions about the future of Liverpool left-back Andrew Robertson, who has been linked with Atletico Madrid. Kerkez will become Liverpool's latest signing in a busy summer transfer window for boss Arne Slot. The Reds have already secured the signature of Netherlands right-back Jeremie Frimpong from Bayer Leverkusen to replace Trent Alexander-Arnold, who has joined Real Madrid. Liverpool are also on the verge of signing Leverkusen's Germany playmaker Florian Wirtz after reportedly agreeing a fee that could rise to a British record £116 million.

Bangladesh's lead over Sri Lanka nears 200 in first Test
The visitors finished at 177-3 after a strong partnership of 68 between opener Shadman Islam and skipper Najmul Hossain Shanto. All-rounder Milan Rathnayake dismissed Shadman for 76 but veteran campaigner Mushfiqur Rahim, fresh off a first-innings century, joined his captain to steady the innings. The duo built an unbroken 49-run partnership for the fourth wicket to put their side in the driver's seat heading into the final day. Bangladesh off-spinner Nayeem Hasan earlier took five wickets to halt Sri Lanka's first-innings charge, with the visitors dismissed for 485 after lunch to trail by 10 runs. Nayeem was well supported by Hasan Mahmud, who finished with 3-74. Sri Lanka looked set for a useful lead after the first session, reaching 465-6 with Kamindu Mendis and Rathnayake stitching together a gritty 84-run stand for the seventh wicket. However, Sri Lanka then surrendered the momentum with a lower-order collapse, losing their last four wickets for 15 runs. Rathnayake had shown commendable defiance for his 39 but was undone by an inside edge onto the stumps off Mahmud. Kamindu followed in the next over with Sri Lanka's score unchanged, falling to Nayeem's off-spin as the ball kicked off the surface and caught the left-hander by surprise. His composed 87 included eight fours and a six but he fell with a third hundred against Bangladesh within sight. Nayeem said he "really enjoyed" Kamindu's wicket. "Very happy with that ball that got him," he said. Nayeem also removed debutant Tharindu Rathnayake for a duck with another sharp off-break that went through the gate as Sri Lanka lost three wickets for just one run in 10 deliveries. He then bowled Asitha Fernando (4) to close out Sri Lanka's innings. The last Test draw at the Galle cricket ground was between the same two sides in 2013. "I think the game is open for both sides," Kamindu said. "If we are able to get three wickets early, then we are up for a challenge." Brief scores: Bangladesh 1st innings: 495 all out (Mushfiqur Rahim 163, Najmul Hossain Shanto 148; Asitha Fernando 4-86) Bangladesh 2nd innings: 177-3 (Shadman Islam 76, Najmul Hossain Shanto 56) © 2025 AFP
