Mosul families demand truth on 600 missing under ISIS

Shafaq News – Mosul
Dozens of families in Mosul's Wadi Hajar district staged a protest on Tuesday, urging Iraqi authorities to reveal the fate of more than 600 men who vanished after ISIS seized the city in 2014.
Gathering on the Right Bank of Mosul, once the group's declared capital in Nineveh, the protesters carried photographs of their loved ones and banners demanding official clarification. The missing were policemen and civilians who disappeared during the militants' occupation and remain unaccounted for eight years after the city's liberation.
Speaking with Shafaq News, one of the protesters, Um Ahmed, praised Nineveh Governor Abdul Qadir al-Dakhil for reopening the file of al-Khafsa — a massive natural sinkhole about 20 kilometers south of Mosul that is considered one of the world's largest mass graves, with estimates ranging from 3,000 victims to far higher.
'If they are martyrs, we want to bury them with dignity. If they are alive, we demand their release,' she said. 'We have been waiting for years, and no one has come to ask about us.'
Residents of Wadi Hajar stress that their suffering did not end with Mosul's liberation. They insist some of the missing were seen later in Iraqi prisons, while other accounts suggest ISIS executed them and dumped the bodies in al-Khafsa.

Top ISIS leader killed in joint Iraq-Syria operation

Shafaq News – Baghdad / Idlib (Updated at 12:06) A senior ISIS figure, Abu Hafs al-Hashimi al-Qurashi, was killed in northwestern Syria during a joint operation supported by Iraqi intelligence, the US-led Global Coalition, and Syrian security forces, a security source told Shafaq News on Wednesday. Al-Qurashi was regarded as the fifth most important ISIS leader in Syria. According to the source, the Iraqi Counter-Terrorism Service provided 'key and essential information on his whereabouts,' which enabled Coalition forces and their Syrian partners to launch an airborne raid that ended with his death. Syrian media earlier reported that al-Qurashi was killed in the town of Atmeh, in the Idlib countryside near the border with Turkiye. The operation began at dawn, when Coalition units surrounded residential areas and engaged an armed individual believed to be affiliated with ISIS. He was later killed in a targeted airstrike. Syrian authorities also detained several French women suspected of being the wives of the slain leader. A similar operation was carried out on June 11, when Coalition troops conducted an airdrop with Syrian partners in Deir ez-Zor province, targeting a group of ISIS militants in the western countryside.

Gideon's Chariots II: 80,000 reservists mobilize for new Gaza offensive

Shafaq News – Middle East Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz has approved a new Gaza City offensive plan, with tens of thousands of reservists set for mobilization, local media reported on Wednesday. According to Channel 12, the campaign, named 'Gideon's Chariots II,' involves about 60,000 emergency call-up orders alongside an extension of service for 20,000 reservists already in uniform, bringing total manpower to roughly 80,000 troops. As part of the plan, 'the army will transfer civilians from combat zones in Gaza to the southern part of the enclave before advancing.' While Israeli authorities described the move as necessary ''to dismantle Hamas,'' critics warned it could complicate hostage negotiations and heighten domestic tensions. Former Prime Minister Ehud Barak, who led Israel between 1999 and 2001, cautioned that the offensive would hand Hamas a political victory and endanger captives. 'Occupying Gaza is a deadly trap,' he warned. 'It means we will not bring the hostages back; they will be killed during the operation.' כיבוש עזה הוא "מלכודת מוות" שתשרת את חמאס ותהפוך את תבוסתו לניצחון מדיני — אהוד ברק (@barak_ehud) August 20, 2025 Moreover, families of the remaining hostages urged Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to pursue a ceasefire deal for the release of roughly 50 captives. 'Everyone knows conditions are ripe for a deal, and it is in your hands,' the Hostages and Missing Families Forum stated, emphasizing that Israelis want the hostages returned rather than further reports of soldiers being killed. Mediators are also pressing for a 60-day truce, including phased prisoner exchanges and wider humanitarian access. Earlier, Israel's public broadcaster, citing an official from the Prime Minister's office, reported that Netanyahu rejected the proposal, 'which Hamas had accepted.' The war, now in its 22nd month, has drawn mounting international criticism. Gaza's Health Ministry reported 62,064 Palestinians killed and 156,573 wounded since October 7, 2023.

Chevron returns to Iraq with new oil development agreement

Shafaq News – Baghdad Iraq has signed a framework agreement with US energy major Chevron, marking the company's renewed presence in the country with plans to explore and develop new oil fields. The deal, signed in Baghdad between the Oil Ministry and Chevron, covers four exploration blocks in the southern Nasiriyah project as well as the development of the Balad oil field and additional prospects. Prime Minister Mohammed Shia al-Sudani attended the ceremony, considering the agreement reflects Iraq's new approach to attracting international companies. Al-Sudani stressed that his government is committed to improving the investment climate and highlighted Chevron's role in transferring technology, applying environmental standards, and supporting local communities. Chevron Vice President Frank Mount, who led the company's delegation, said Iraq offers major opportunities in both resources and workforce capacity, affirming Chevron's plan to establish a long-term partnership, citing the country's improved security conditions and the company's ability to bring advanced technologies. In 2021, Iraq's National Oil Company was authorized to negotiate with Chevron over projects in Nasiriyah, in the southern province of Dhi Qar. At the time, officials said the development plan aimed to reach an initial production capacity of 600,000 barrels of crude oil per day within seven years. The latest signing is among the most visible US oil investments in Iraq in recent years, as Baghdad seeks to diversify partners and accelerate development of untapped reserves. It follows other recent agreements with American energy firms. In July, Iraq signed a contract with SLB (formerly Schlumberger) to expand gas production at the Akkas field, targeting 100 million standard cubic feet per day. Earlier this year, Al-Sudani also held talks with Baker Hughes CEO Lorenzo Simonelli on expanding energy technology projects. Iraq has also secured multi-billion-dollar deals with other oil majors in the past two years, reversing a period of retreat. New terms have lured companies such as France's TotalEnergies and the UK's BP, whose combined investments exceed $50 billion.
