PGA Tour caddie has 'greatest season of unemployment' after brutal text from golf star

After professional golfer Ryan Moore advised him to find a full-time job, caddie Austin Gaugert has ironically experienced the "greatest season of unemployment" following a recent $72,000 windfall for assisting Garrick Higgo.
Higgo,
a PGA Tour star
, recently claimed the Corales Puntacana Championship 2025, earning $720,000 after hiring Gaugert on a three-week trial. This isn't the only instance of a golfer achieving success with a new caddie,
as Justin Thomas won the RBC Heritage
with a last-minute replacement
who previously worked with Max Homa.
Gaugert has essentially worked as a freelance caddie this season but may become Higgo's permanent caddie moving forward. It's been a remarkable year for Gaugert, who was considering a career change before an unexpected opportunity arose.

Moore didn't let Gaugert go due to poor performance but was honest about his limited competition schedule this season. "I changed up caddies for these fall events, and I think we hit it off right away and had good mojo and just played well together," Moore said, praising Gaugert. "I think he was a big part of it. Just a good, positive guy that was encouraging me and keeping my stress level pretty low."
However, Moore's suggestion that Gaugert look for a new job has ultimately led to a more lucrative outcome for the caddie. In a chat with SiriusXM PGA TOUR Radio, Gaugert reminisced about his recent victory alongside Higgo and discussed the unique nature of this year.
"It's actually been one of the weirdest caddie years of my career," he remarked. "I've been out caddying for about ten years now, I started in 2016, and I caddied for Ryan Moore for about the last year and a half. So the whole 2024 season and like the fall of the 2023 season.
"And he texted me at the beginning of the year like, 'Hey dude! I don't know how much I am going to play. If I were you and you really wanted to find a full-time job, I would probably go look for a few jobs.
"So I was like okay. I started the year with an asterisk of unemployment, and then I went and caddied for Dylan Wu on the Korn Ferry and then at Torrey Pines. Then I got asked at Torrey Pines to do a one-week trial with Sami Valimaki. I was flying home from the one week in Arizona, Patrick Rodgers called me.

"I filled in for him three other times. He called me. His caddie was having hernia surgery. He's like, 'Hey, do you wanna work the next three weeks?' We played so well at Genesis, Mexico, and Palm Beach that we actually got in Bay Hill.
"We finished third in Genesis, 25th in Mexico, 18th at Palm Beach. So then, I went and caddied Bay Hill for him too. Finished 22nd there. I was like okay, I made some money. So now, I don't know. I am still unemployed because his caddie came back."
Gaugert was all set for a family getaway when Higgo rang him up with an offer. Cutting his vacation short, Gaugert took the chance, which resulted in yet another hefty payday.
"He's like, 'Hey, do you want to come down to Savannah?' And I'm like, I mean, not really. I just made some money," Gaugert confessed. "I was ready to sit at home. I was having a great time. I've been telling people I've had like, maybe like the greatest, one of the greatest seasons of unemployment ever."

Justin Thomas can rest easy as PGA Tour star beats Rory McIlroy to $1.3M prize

Justin Thomas breathed a sigh of relief as Andrew Novak finally broke through to secure his first-ever PGA Tour title. Earlier this month, Thomas managed to beat Novak in a tense playoff at the RBC Heritage, securing his first win since the 2022 USPGA Championship. But in doing so, Thomas couldn't help but worry that his victory might come back to haunt him in the same way Jordan Spieth's had years ago. The story goes back to 2015, when Spieth edged out then 46-year-old Tom Gillis at the John Deere Classic, thwarting the veteran's chance to become the oldest first-time PGA Tour winner in 20 years. Thomas reminisced about the incident during an appearance on the Pardon My Take podcast. He said: "For the whole year [PGA star] Jason Duffner was grilling Jordan like, 'man, you just ruined Tom Gillis' career, he would've had a two-year exemption, he would've been in Maui, he could've taken his family there, he could've been swimming with the dolphins with the tournament champions, but you had to beat him in a play-off and ruin his life'." However, Thomas remained optimistic about Novak's prospects. He added: "Gilly was a little closer to the end of his career, and Andrew's playing well, but I hadn't thought of that after telling the story, and so I definitely hope it pans out now [for Novak]." Novak came up just short against Thomas in the RBC Heritage (Image: Jared C. Tilton/Getty Images) That confidence was justified as Novak, in tandem with Ben Griffin, won the Zurich Classic in New Orleans on Sunday, banking $1.3 million between them. The US pair edged out the Danish duo Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard by one shot while defending champions Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry had to settle for a tie for 12th after a closing 72. Novak said retaining a positive attitude was key to finally landing PGA Tour silverware. He said: "I've done a pretty good job not getting overly frustrated with the close shaves. "I've been trying to take as many positives from each as I can. There was a lot of confidence coming into this week for sure." Ben Griffin (left) and Novak after winning the Zurich Classic in New Orleans (Image:) Novak, 30, grew up in South Carolina while Griffin, 28, is from North Carolina. They became close in their early years as pros after playing in the same tournaments as teenagers. Griffin said: "We've done just about everything in our career together. It's just a full-circle moment. I feel like we've had similar tracks to where we are today."

Donald Trump refuses to stand near Eagles owner for ludicrous reason at White House

Donald Trump had a ludicrous reason for not wanting to stand next to Philadelphia Eagles owner Jeffrey Lurie at the White House. The Eagles were in Washington D.C. to celebrate their Super Bowl LIX victory over the Kansas City Chiefs , with star running back Saquon Barkley spending time with the president before the team's formal visit. Star quarterback Jalen Hurts and a number of other stars were not present, however, citing "scheduling conflicts. " As Trump made his way to the podium in front of the Eagles players, he noticed how large some of the football players are. Standing on a raised platform, the 78-year-old told the crowd what he thought of the size of the Eagles stars who were situated behind him. This guy - you know, when we walked up I said, 'You know, you just stay here a little bit, I'll walk up in front of you because I didn't want to get anywhere near the size of you,' and the greatness as a player too." This is not the first time Trump has made himself look taller as he stood among athletes. When Ohio State visited the White House after the Buckeyes defeated Notre Dame in the College Football Playoff National Championship, Trump again stood on a raised platform while the players were behind him . "Do you notice the way they're sitting in, like, a little trench?" he said at the time to reporters and the players behind him. "I didn't want them at the same level. Actually, it was really — but I feel very good about that, [ Vice President J.D. Vance ], right? Let's keep them down a little bit." "Complementing Saquon's historic season was an incredible year from star quarterback Jalen Hurts, and he really - he had a great season and a great game (in the Super Bowl)," the president said. "He finished with 32 touchdowns in the year, turning in one stellar performance after another. A terrific guy, and a terrific player." Along with Hurts, AJ Brown, DeVonta Smith, Nolan Smith Jr, Jordan Davis, Jalen Carter, Darius Slay, CJ Gardner Johnson, Zack Baun, Nakobe Dean, Isaiah Rodgers, Jalyx Hunt, Josh Sweat, Tyler Steen and Quinyon Mitchell were not present . When images of him spending time with Trump hit social media, many fans were shocked to see the Eagles star spending time with the 78-year-old, with some denouncing his actions. In response, Barkley hit back on X : "lol some people are really upset cause I played golf and flew to the White House with the PRESIDENT. Maybe I just respect the office, not a hard concept to understand. Just golfed with Obama not too long ago…and look forward to finishing my round with Trump! Now ya get out my mentions with all this politics and have amazing day."

Amanda Balionis toasts after eventful Zurich Classic and intimate Rory McIlroy chat

Amanda Balionis ended a frantic and stressful weekend in New Orleans by raising a glass with friends after another marathon golf event filled with weather shambles, power outages, and a sit-down with Rory McIlroy that stole the show. Balionis took to Instagram to post a celebratory story late Sunday night, clinking wine glasses with three friends at what appeared to be a local spot near TPC Louisiana in Avondale. The vibes were set to "Cheers to Life" by SondoMaster, especially the part of the record that says, "Let's celebrate this moment we're living. Raise our glasses with happy smiles." The 2025 Zurich Classic of New Orleans featured a 93-minute weather delay during the final round , thunderstorms that threatened from just seven miles out, and a network power outage so bad that CBS Sports once again had to think on the fly and play replays of last year's event. The tournament also saw a 92-minute delay in round three, also due to inclement weather, with McIlory having to wait over an hour just to putt . It was a genuine interview with McIlroy and partner Shane Lowry, two old friends who once again put their well-known relationship on full display to the golf community. "Trevor Immelman said this is the most relaxed and happiest he's maybe ever seen you in your career," Balionis posed to McIlroy after their final round. McIlroy smiled while Lowry chimed in and said, "If he's not happy now, he never will be." The moment caught fire online, as fans quickly noted the easy chemistry between McIlroy and Balionis that has grown over the years through interviews. "These two are so fun together," wrote one fan, while another joked, "The way their eyes shine when they speak tells it all." McIlroy remains happily married to his wife Erica Stoll, who was present for his historic Masters win earlier this year. The pair celebrated their victory with a return trip to Ireland, including a stop in London , despite speculation that his wife and daughter did not join him on the return flight home. Even without a duo trophy in hand this season, McIlroy and Lowry made a run at defending their Zurich Classic title , tying for No. 12 place after shooting a rough 72 in the final round to finish. The duo of Benjamin Griffin and Andrew Novak outlasted Danish twins Nicolai and Rasmus Hojgaard by a single stroke, pocketing $2.65 million apiece for their first PGA Tour wins. Balionis has used her time after the tournament to show her fitness progress online. She has continued her ongoing work in the dog adoption space, hosting an adoption event for Tito's Golf Club and even involving golfer Davis Riley to help with adoption efforts for her Puppies and Golf nonprofit, which she founded as its President.
