Russia Slams Report it Backed 'Zero Enrichment' Iran Nuclear Deal

Russia's foreign affairs ministry on Sunday described reports claiming that President Vladimir Putin had encouraged his Iranian ally to accept a "zero enrichment" agreement on its nuclear programme as "defamation".
US news outlet Axios reported on Saturday, citing three anonymous sources familiar with the matter, that Putin had "encouraged" Iran to accept a deal with the United States that would prevent the Islamic republic from enriching uranium.
The article "appears to be a new political defamation campaign aimed at exacerbating tensions around Iran's nuclear program", the Russian ministry of foreign affairs said on Sunday.
"Invariably and repeatedly, we have emphasised the necessity of resolving the crisis concerning Iran's nuclear program exclusively through political and diplomatic means, and expressed our willingness to help find mutually acceptable solutions," the statement read.
Publicly, Moscow has defended Tehran's right to use nuclear technology for civilian purposes but in recent months, Putin has also drawn closer to US President Donald Trump.
On June 13, Israel launched an unprecedented attack on Iran, triggering a 12-day war.
The conflict halted negotiations initiated in April between Tehran and Washington to frame Iran's nuclear program in exchange for lifting economic sanctions against Iran.
On June 22, the United States bombed the underground uranium enrichment site at Fordo, south of Tehran, and nuclear facilities in Isfahan and Natanz.
The exact extent of the damage is not known.

Bitcoin Soars To New All-time High As Us Lawmakers Focus On Pro-crypto Legislation

Bitcoin continued its rapid climb and hit another all-time high Monday as US lawmakers begin a week focused on passing pro-crypto legislation. Data from CoinMarketCap showed bitcoin climbed above 123000 early Monday, up from about 108000 only a week ago. The world's oldest and most popular cryptocurrency is currently the fifth most valuable asset class in the world at 2.4 trillion, giving it a higher market cap than Amazon. The enthusiasm for bitcoin comes as the US House is set to take up several pieces of cryptocurrency-related legislation in what's been dubbed crypto week in Congress. Lawmakers have been under pressure from President Donald Trump and the big-spending crypto lobby to pass legislation quickly. That includes a bill passed last month by the Senate that would regulate a type of cryptocurrency known as stablecoins. The House is also set to take up cryptocurrency market structure legislation that is far more sweeping. Trump, once a skeptic of the industry, has vowed in his second term to make the US the global capital of crypto. Meanwhile, he and his family have moved aggressively into nearly every corner of the industry: mining operations, billion-dollar bitcoin purchases, a newly minted stablecoin, and a Trump-branded meme coin. The crypto industry has rapidly become a major player in Washington after feeling unfairly targeted by the Biden administration. The industry spent huge amounts on last year's elections and has been spending heavily on lobbying and other influence efforts this year. Bitcoin has seen a significant rebound since April, when it briefly dipped below 75000. Spot bitcoin ETFs are becoming increasingly popular since launching last year, and several publicly traded companies have made using debt and stock sales to buy bitcoin their primary business strategy. Created in response to the 2008 financial crisis, bitcoin has taken a highly volatile path to mainstream acceptance. Its backers say the asset is like a digital gold that can act as a hedge against central bank and government malfeasance. Only 21 million bitcoins will ever be created. Bitcoin's price is finally catching up to what's been building under the surface, said Adam Back, CEO of the crypto company Blockstream. 'This is institutional demand aligning with bitcoin's fundamentals and a fixed supply doing what it was designed to do,' he said.

US Sends Beirut ‘Warning' and ‘Incentive' Over Hezbollah Arms

US special envoy Tom Barrack delivered a dual message of 'incentive' and 'warning' to the Lebanese capital this week, urging swift action on the issue of Hezbollah's weapons. 'You have Israel on one side, you have Iran on the other, and now you have Syria manifesting itself so quickly that if Lebanon doesn't move, it's going to be Bilad Al Sham again,' he said, using the historical name for the Syria region. The remarks sparked alarm within Lebanon's political establishment, with some interpreting the comments as a blunt warning of 'existential danger.' Government sources told Asharq al-Awsat that Barrack, who also serves as Washington's ambassador to Türkiye and was previously tasked with Syria policy, appears to be approaching the Lebanon and Syria files through a unified lens. 'Barrack believes that Lebanon should follow the same diplomatic path as Syria,' one official said, referring to Damascus' recent re-engagement with regional and international actors. 'But he also understands Lebanon's complex political terrain.' Barrack's comments about Lebanon potentially 'returning to Bilad Al Sham' provoked criticism across the political spectrum, prompting him to clarify his position in a post on X, formerly Twitter. 'My comments yesterday praised Syria's impressive strides, not a threat to Lebanon,' wrote Barrack. 'I observed the reality that Syria is moving at light speed to seize the historic opportunity presented by President Donald Trump lifting of sanctions: investment from Türkiye and the Gulf, diplomatic outreach to neighboring countries, and a clear vision for the future,' he added. He said Syria's leadership is 'seeking coexistence and shared prosperity with Lebanon based on sovereign equality,' and stressed that the United States supports a bilateral relationship that promotes 'peace, prosperity, and mutual respect' between the two nations. 'I can assure that Syria's leaders only want co-existence and mutual prosperity with Lebanon, and the United States is committed to supporting that relationship between two equal and sovereign neighbors enjoying peace and prosperity,' said Barrack. Barrack, in the context of disarming Hezbollah, had stated that a successful approach requires a combination of "carrots and sticks". This means using both positive incentives (carrots) and negative consequences (sticks) to achieve the desired outcome. Barrack's recent warning to Lebanon reflects the 'stick' Washington is wielding, while his unprecedented acknowledgment of Hezbollah's dual structure signals the 'carrot' being offered. 'This is the first time a US official publicly distinguishes between Hezbollah's political and military wings,' one source told Asharq al-Awsat. 'It's a message of inducement aimed directly at Hezbollah, despite the fact that Washington has long treated both branches as inseparable and placed them under the same sanctions regime,' they explained. In remarks to the press, Barrack reiterated the US designation of Hezbollah as a terrorist organization, but added nuance rarely heard from senior American officials.
