Hidden Gems: Misunderstood Movies On Hulu
Here are 16 movies currently on Hulu that, despite getting panned by critics and/or audiences, are worth the watch:
Robots (2005)
This movie is filled with all kinds of unhinged robot puns and in-your-face comedy. The great Mel Brooks voices Bigweld. With a 54% audience score on Rotten Tomatoes, it's proof that some of you can't let kids have a laugh and some fun.Watch it on Hulu.
The League of Extraordinary Gentlemen (2003)
This movie is a mess, dorky, and I love it. It's a fun thrill ride of a movie, and despite its 16% critics' score on RT, younger me still enjoyed the action and cheesy dialogue. I highly recommend it for comic book fans.Watch it on Hulu.
The Day After Tomorrow (2004)
Come for the effects, not the story. No matter the school year, I feel like I watched this in every science class whenever my science teacher was out sick. With scores 50% and below from both audiences and critics on RT, I'd argue this is the most memorable disaster movie of the 2000s.Watch it on Hulu.
Father of the Bride: Part II (1995)
Who says sequels have to suck? Silly plot and all, the sequel to Steve Martin's Father of the Bride is a lot of fun and laughs. A 54% on RT seems HARSH for any movie starring Martin Short as Franck. Watch it on Hulu.
Flight of the Phoenix (2004)
I'm sure the original starring the great Jimmy Stewart is lightyears better, but you gotta respect them for trying to take that and make it more of an action flick. For some reason, a twist in this movie still sticks out to me, and it's one of my favorites from a "bad" movie...and that alone is worth watching. (Of course...that same twist is from the original, but I thought it was handled well in the remake.)Watch it on Hulu.
Alien 3 (1992)
Hear me out...yes, the first two are way better. But there are plenty of great moments in the third installment. When it doesn't rely on CGI xenomorphs, the story is pretty interesting and veers away from the norm Alien franchise fans are used to. The sub-50% scores on RT are credited to the disappointment of the film (and the opening twist), but I'd crank it up by 10...ish percent.Watch it on Hulu.
Lost in Space (1998)
The nostalgia hits with this one. That design for Robot, the cast, my childhood crush...this movie had everything. Great? Not quite. But it is a fun ride. Sub-30% by both critics and audiences is WILD. What happened to everyone's sense of (silly and campy) adventure?Watch it on Hulu.
Prometheus (2012)
My cat's favorite movie (it's something with the colors). Again, I think people allow disappointment to drag their ratings down, because 68% RT audience score, although not the worst, is still extremely low for a film of this magnitude.Watch it on Hulu.
A Haunting in Venice (2023)
This is a case of overexposure. The Hercule Poirot films are often overlooked, but this one in particular really flew under the radar. It has a 6.5 on IMDb, but is certified fresh on RT. Mixed signals, much? It's a cool mystery thriller movie with plenty of horror elements.Watch it on Hulu.
Tammy (2014)
Comedy is quite subjective, and if you like Melissa McCarthy, you should probably ignore the ratings. It is a cast made up of mostly women, which spells bad news for any comedy looking for honest critiques, and the reviews def reflect that if you read the downvotes. Watch it on Hulu.
The Monkey (2025)
So this is new-new, but I was shocked to discover audiences did not love it (56% audience score on RT). It's a dark comedy with plenty of gore and scares. I thought it was hilarious, and although not the most fantastic horror movie I've seen this year, "rotten" feels a bit harsh. Stop disrespecting horror, or we are gonna have to throw hands, people.Watch it on Hulu.
The Proposal (2009)
A 45% critics' score on RT. 45%! You all are wild. Any movie starring Betty White deserves at least an 80% rating. I don't make the rules! Also: Sandra Bullock and Ryan Reynolds. You will at least get a few laughs even if your heart is stone.Watch it on Hulu.
Presence (2024)
Horror fans, beware. This isn't a hardcore ghost flick, but it is an incredibly original idea and shot beautifully. I feel like the poor ratings from audiences are due to expectations (52% audience score on RT), but I think it's a unique experience in "movie-going" even at home.Watch it on Hulu.
The Hitchhikers Guide to the Galaxy (2005)
People are afraid to let their "goof flag" fly. Although not a "rotten" score, people really bashed this when it came out because they weren't able to embrace silly sci-fi. Ironic, now so many superhero movies have become full-blown comedies. Wrong place, wrong time...I guess. Watch it on Hulu.
I, Robot (2004)
Sleep. Sleep. Sleep. Everyone sleeps on this film as far as sci-fi joints are concerned. It's got plenty of memorable dialogue, fun action, and I'd argue it's one of Will Smith's more fun leading man roles (Alan Tudyk is great as always, too). Fans enjoyed it, but the critics' score is a 57% which is a rotten opinion if you ask me.Watch it on Hulu.
Evil Dead (2013)
Scary as hell, tough to watch, and a pretty memorable installment to the Evil Dead franchise. Not as popular as Evil Dead Rise, the film still packs a punch that it's RT score of 63% does not do justice.Watch it on Hulu.

The 10 Best TV Shows On Netflix According To Rotten Tomatoes Critic Score
Well, if you've arrived here, I know you're looking for something to watch on Netflix right now, and the options are seemingly endless. But the best shows on Netflix? You might want to consult the critics, as they've watched them all. We're sticking with Netflix originals here, as we know those are evergreen series that are not going to be taken off the service by the time you read this. Licensing deals come and go, but if something was made by Netflix, it's staying here. The bad news, however, is that despite these high reviews, some of these series were cancelled before their time, as Netflix cares more about viewership than scores. But as of August 2025, here are the ten best Netflix TV shows according to Rotten Tomatoes critics: 1) Arcane (100% - 2 seasons) Widely considered one of the best animated series of all time, Arcane brings the world of the video game League of Legends to life, spotlighting a number of characters from the hit MOBA, and rendering them in a gorgeous, never-before-seen animation style. But it's more than stylish, the drama, the action are just as worthwhile, and it's only one of two shows here that retained a 100% score across both its seasons. There are future series set in the world of League of Legends coming in the future, given what a hit this was. 2) The Baby-Sitter's Club (100% - 2 seasons) This is the second series with double 100%s across seasons, but this one is a bit more of a tragedy. Despite being one of the two highest-scored Netflix original series, it was cancelled after season 2 and not renewed for season 3. It's a throwback to the classic novels with a young, charming cast who bring that world to life in a pleasant series perfect for the younger crowd and their parents. 3) Giri/Haji (100% - 1 season) How many tragedies must we endure? The only crime series in the top 10, the Japanese Giri/Haji was a stellar split time between Japan and London, and dives deep into the world of Yakuza. But once again, despite high scores and a lot of praise, it was cancelled after season 1, which is another great tragedy on the list here. However, it's still very much worth watching. 4) Cyberpunk Edgerunners (100% - miniseries, 1 season) The second animated video game adaptation on the list, you could make the argument it's even better than Arcane. It was announced well before the release of Cyberpunk 2077 and mostly forgotten about in the wake of the disastrous launch of that game. But as 2077 fixed things and improved, Edgerunners finally made it to air and blew everyone away with its story that takes place in the world of the game, without directly connecting to it. Now, it's been confirmed another, separate Cyberpunk series is heading to Netflix. 5) Maya and the Three (100% - miniseries, 1 season) Now we move to an animated kids series, one starring the box office goddess Zoe Saldana, star of Avatar, and a prominent member of the MCU. It's a series that follows a young princess who teams up with legendary warriors to save the world from evil gods. It's just nine episodes long and perfect for perhaps not little kids, but a smidge older than that. 6) Cassandra (100% - miniseries, 1 season) I really love this show. It's German, so flip those subtitles on, but it's an incredibly unique horror production that blends a Jetsons aesthetic with a truly terrifying, but ultimately tragic villain in the form of the robotic Cassandra, attempting to steal a family for her own. It's the only horror series on this list, and I would agree that it's one of the best on Netflix, which has some solid entries on that front. 7) The Playlist (100% - miniseries, 1 season) This is one I haven't seen, but it's a recreation of the birth of Spotify, which was started by a Swedish tech entrepreneur. We have seen a number of these tech origin story productions, the most famous of which being The Social Network, but this is reportedly one of the best. You won't know the Swedish cast, but it's going to be worth watching all the same. 8) Baby Reindeer (99%, miniseries) The truly bizarre, gripping story of a man stalked by a woman, based on a true story, with the central figure in question played by the actual, real-life person. That's something you don't see every day. This spawned a number of Emmy wins and blowback from the alleged real-life stalker who disputes her characterization, and said she was too easily identified. 9) Mo (98% - 2 seasons) A 98% across two seasons is no small feat, and Mo, a full-on comedy, has pleased critics for years now. The series is newly relevant as it focuses on a Palestinian refugee trying to get US citizenship through asylum. This is a comedy? Yes, yes it is, but it's able to tackle serious issues through that medium. 10) Unbelievable (98% - Miniseries, 1 season) Want to see a future Emmy winner? That would be Kaitlyn Dever, the star of a tremendous amount of great series from Dopesick to Apple Cider Vinegar to now The Last of Us. But in this story, she plays a teen who was raped and attempts to prove that in a system that doesn't want to believe her. It's based on a true story, and it's a hard watch, but worth it. Bonus: Mindhunter (97% - 2 seasons) You could make the case that it is the single best series in Netflix history, the origin of a nation's hunt for serial killers. The show is frustrating in the sense that it deserved more than two seasons. It was allegedly cancelled by Netflix for costing too much, but now that the service is spending billions on content, it would seem wise to bring it back, and there are tiny, tiny rumblings that could happen. But it still seems like a long shot. Those are the critic picks, and I'll plan to do audiences next. Follow me on Twitter, YouTube, and Instagram. Pick up my sci-fi novels the Herokiller series and The Earthborn Trilogy.

Who Is Kirsh in Alien: Earth? Timothy Olyphant's Character Explained
After a long wait, fans finally got to see Alien: Earth. It had a two-episode premiere on Hulu and FX last night. The show is set in the year 2120, two years before Ridley Scott's original Alien is set. It takes place on Earth, where a Weyland-Yutani ship, carrying samples of Xenomorphs, crash-lands in a city. A group of hybrids called the 'Lost Boys' is sent to investigate the incident. As a prequel, it introduces new and interesting characters, like Kirsh, played by Timothy Olyphant. So, what is his character all about? Here are the details. Who and what is Timothy Olyphant's Kirsh in Alien: Earth? In Alien: Earth, Kirsh, played by the Emmy Award-nominated Timothy Olyphant, is an android, or more commonly known as a synthetic or synth. He works at the Prodigy Corporation and is the scientist who mentors Wendy. Olyphant is most popularly known for his roles in Justified, Deadwood: The Movie, and The Mandalorian, all of which got him his Emmy nominations. Kirsh's primary responsibility is to guide and protect Wendy (Sydney Chandler), a hybrid, the first successful human consciousness transplant into a synthetic body. The character is seen pretty early in the episode, where he is talking to a sick girl, Marcy. It was her conscious that Boy Kavlier transferred to Wendy's body. Synths have been an integral part of the Alien franchise. They are designed to look and behave like humans, but with android functionality. Fans of the franchise will remember Ash, portrayed by Ian Holm, a humanoid whose true nature wasn't revealed until later in the movie. Since then, we've seen many chilling representations of synthetics in sequel and prequel movies. Starting August 19, 2025, viewers will be getting one episode per week. You can currently stream the first two episodes on Hulu. Solve the daily Crossword
