Cinderella's Dream comes through for Falmouth Stakes victory

RTÉ News11-07-2025
Cinderella's Dream returned to winning ways to secure Group One honours in the Tattersalls Falmouth Stakes at Newmarket.
Trained by Charlie Appleby and ridden by William Buick, Cinderella's Dream needed to reverse Royal Ascot form with her Duke of Cambridge Stakes conqueror Crimson Advocate, while Aidan O'Brien's three-year-old January provided a fresh test for the Godolphin runner.
Cinderella's Dream looked the have the measure of Crimson Advocate only for well-backed favourite January to deliver her challenge, with Buick's mount battling all the way to the line to prevail by half a length as a 5-2 chance, with a length and three-quarters back to Crimson Advocate in third.

"I did think when she hit the rising ground it would take a tough one to get past her," said Appleby, who was winning the Falmouth for the first time.
"I'll be honest, I don't know if she was firing on all cylinders at Ascot. We always look for excuses when we're beaten so we used the bend and the 3lb penalty, but she's been round Del Mar and you ain't going to get many tighter turns than that, so I don't think we can say going round Ascot was going to be too much of a challenge for her.
"Will was just happy over a mile on a straight track as maybe a mile round a bend is sharp enough.
"She won her maiden at Lingfield and then we went up to Thirsk to win her novice. She's knee high to a grasshopper but she's as tough as teak and I'm delighted for her as she's been so consistent and for her to win a Group One here in Europe is richly deserved.
"We're very much going to work back from the Breeders' Cup Filly And Mare Turf. It annoyed me when that got away for us last year, so we'll go back for a crack at that, how we get there we'll work that out."
The other Group race on the card saw Venetian Sun hold off the late charge of Royal Fixation to win the Duchess of Cambridge Stakes as she extended her unbeaten record.
Sent off the 2-5 favourite after a convincing Albany Stakes success at Royal Ascot, Venetian Sun travelled supremely well throughout the six-furlong Group Two and when Clifford Lee asked her to quicken, it looked a matter of how far.
Royal Fixation and William Buick had other ideas though, launching their challenge away from the market leader in the final furlong, with Venetian Sun's margin only a neck in the end, although there was still a slightly cosy feel to it.

Winning trainer Karl Burke said: "This race wasn't part of the plan originally, we just made a decision last week to enter and have a look at the race and if we were happy with the filly and happy with the race then we might take our chance.
"There's been no issues with the filly, but we haven't trained her for this race – we've been fairly easy on her since Ascot, as you would expect, with the thought that we'd go for the Lowther at York or maybe the Prix Morny.
"Now she's won a Group Two that brings the Morny into it more than the Lowther. We won't say we're definitely going to the Morny, but if the ground is a bit easier and it's a race we think we can be very competitive in we could go there and still have time to get her ready for the Moyglare.
"If we're not happy with her for the Morny, we'll go straight to the Moyglare."
Burke completed the Albany/Duchess Of Cambridge Stakes double with Dandalla five years ago, while Laurens and Fallen Angel were both Classic-winning fillies for the Spigot Lodge handler, who has made no secret of the regard in which he holds his latest potential star.
"I would say she's another league above Dandalla, who was a very good racehorse but this filly is a little bit special," he added.
"She'd be quicker than Laurens and Fallen Angel. They were high-class, Group One-winning fillies and this filly hasn't done that yet, but she'd be a lot quicker and she's a very straightforward filly with a fantastic mind."

Murphy to take over from Doyle

Hollie Doyle will no longer act as the retained rider to owner Imad Al Sagar, with Oisin Murphy instead due to take up the position. Doyle was in the saddle each time Al Sagar's star mare Nashwa took to the track, guiding her to three Group One victories at the peak of her career. The formal retainer may have now come to an end, but Al Sagar and his racing manager Teddy Grimthorpe hope to maintain their link with the rider. The latter said: "We're keen to stress that we have had a fantastic relationship with Hollie throughout, and we hope that will continue for many years to come in different forms. "There are, however, moments when it is time for a change and Imad felt this was the right time to move on. "We will now use Oisin, when available, in the absence of Hollie." Doyle told "Unfortunately, I was informed on Friday I'd lost my long-standing retainer with leading owner Imad Al Sagar. It came as a bit of a shock, particularly at this stage of the season. "I've been a part of Imad's operation for five years, riding 38 winners including at the highest of levels. We've enjoyed numerous stakes winners, a Royal Ascot winner and a Classic winner with the wonderful Nashwa in the Prix de Diane in 2022, followed by two further Group One successes. "I have nothing but the utmost respect for Imad and would like to thank him for giving me such an amazing opportunity at a formative stage of my career. I wish him and the team the very best of luck in the future."

More Thunder impresses again at Newbury

More Thunder continued his brilliant summer when powering home for an impressive victory in the Visit Malta Hungerford Stakes at Newbury. Only an agonising Royal Ascot defeat in the Wokingham counts as a slight blot on the copybook of William Haggas' four-year-old this season. He was scoring for the fourth time in a campaign which has seen him now successfully climb the ladder into Group company. Sent off the 6-4 favourite after landing the spoils in the Bunbury Cup last month, Tom Marquand had More Thunder in his customary position away from the pace as Hackwood Stakes winner Rage Of Bamby and Lennox Stakes victor Witness Stand disputed the it and led the runners into the closing stages. However, the complexion of the race changed once Marquand eased his mount into top gear, weaving his way to the front with half a furlong to run before darting clear in tremendous fashion late on. More Thunder finished two and a quarter lengths clear of Witness Stand who kept on gamely for second and Marvelman a head further back in third. Haggas said: "He's progressing well and I was very pleased with him today, he won well. "I still don't really know what his best trip is, but he seems to be getting better anyway and he was strong at the finish today, he wasn't stopping. "I think he's quite effective if not at his best on slower ground and he's been fun. He's done very well and beat a horse who won a good race last time, so hopefully the form is strong and he's won comfortably so I'm delighted." More Thunder holds a host of high-ranking entries at distances ranging from six furlongs to a mile later in the season and with Group Two honours secured, the Somerville Lodge handler raised the possibility of stepping up to the highest level before the year is out. "I would say all options are open for him," continued Haggas. "We're in everything from six furlongs to a mile and he's won a Group Two now so we've got to go for another Group Two or a Group One and it will just depend on how many more races we're going to give him this season. "He won at both the Craven and the Guineas meeting so he has been on the go for a while so we will have to see. "We need to make plans, will he retire or race again as a five-year-old? So we've got lots to think about - but it's nice thinking."

Jessica Harrington's Marazion can make belated mark at Tramore

There are two meetings today, both of the Flat variety, and the nap comes in Tramore, where Marazion can belatedly make her mark by taking the opening race, the Assembly Tech Irish EBF Fillies' Maiden. Jessica Harrington's filly has been disappointing thus far but there has been promise along the way. Last time out, she was off the pace much of the way but stayed on quite nicely in the closing stages to finish fourth behind the progressive Happy Pharaoh. Given the way she performed in that race and the nature of this race and track, it will be surprising if the selection is not sent forward this time. That being the case, she can keep her rivals at bay. Ledecky is entitled to improve from her debut effort in Cork, and Matrice has some claims, but this is an unmistakable opportunity for Marazion and she really ought to make the most of it. With a rating of 79, Kingstonian has obvious claims in the Griffin Auctioneers Maiden but there was much to be taken from the debut effort of So Golden, and the once-raced four-year-old filly can improve enough to land the spoils. In the Curragh, Los Angeles is favourite for the Group 3 Newbridge Silverware Royal Whip Stakes and while he has a distinct class edge over his rivals, preference is for Zahrann. The latter, trained by Johnny Murtagh, is on an upward curve and, despite still showing signs of greenness, she ran really well in a Group 2 at Royal Ascot. Taking on Los Angeles is quite a task, but that rival was certainly disappointing last time and has a question to answer now. That sways the verdict in favour of the potential improver. The Group 3 Comer Group International Irish St Leger Trial has attracted just five runners and Absurde can upset likely favourite Puppet Master. Willie Mullins' seven-year-old was no match for Al Qareem on his most recent outing but prior to that he ran a superb race to finish a close third behind stablemate Illinois and the aforementioned Al Qareem in the Ormonde Stakes at Chester. Running to that form should be good enough to cope with today's rivals. Puppet Master was well beaten in the Irish Derby and must bounce back to form to play a leading role. Believe In Glory has leading claims in the Irish Stallion Farms EBF Nursery. Ken Condon's two-year-old filly has been a consistent sort this season and while she had to settle for third place on a recent trip to Beverley, she ran on nicely and that run suggested a step up to six furlongs would suit. She tries that trip this afternoon and it can have the desired effect of getting her off the mark for her career. On Sunday, the National Hunt returns to Tramore for the final day of the August meeting and the nap goes to Cabra Queen, who can get off the mark over fences by taking the Victoria House Tramore Mares' Beginners' Chase for local trainer Henry de Bromhead. Well beaten on her chasing debut, in mid-May, she performed much better on her second start, at Tipperary, where she was just touched off by Belle The Lioness. Likely to improve further for that experience, and with the return to this longer trip also a positive, she can take this at the expense of Littlebiggie. That latter made her chasing debut late last month and ran well to finish second behind Ma Belle Etoile. While the winner was well beaten here on Thursday night, the form received an earlier boost when Bynx won a handicap chase on her next start. Littlebiggie should have little trouble winning races in this sphere and is feared most.
