KUPEKMAS Urges Expansion Of MADANI Workers' Card To Pensioners
Its president, Datuk Omar Osman, said many retirees still support their families and require continued government assistance to manage expenses.
'Pensioners also deserve access to discounts, as many still have financial dependents. We appeal to the government, especially the Prime Minister, to extend the MADANI Workers' Card to all pensioners,' he told Bernama after the National Pensioners Day 2025 celebration at Dewan Yayasan Bena Nusa today.
The membership card is issued to union members nationwide, offering various discounts and special benefits provided by over 100 participating companies.
Meanwhile, KUPEKMAS deputy president Mohd Shaman Jaes urged the Ministry of Health to expedite the appointment of pensioners to the Hospital Visitors Board nationwide, so their concerns can be heard directly from the ground.
Mohd Shaman stressed that having pensioners represented on the board is crucial to ensure that real issues faced by retirees regarding access to healthcare are conveyed directly to the Health Ministry.
'Healthcare is one of the main concerns for pensioners, alongside financial challenges. We want actual retirees to represent us on the board, not other groups,' he said.
He added that a discussion on the matter was held with Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr Dzulkefly Ahmad in April, but appointment letters for pensioner representatives have yet to be issued.

Haze: Melaka Gov't Activates District Disaster Management Committees With Immediate Effect
MELAKA, July 21 (Bernama) -- The Melaka government, through the State Disaster Management Committee, has instructed that all District Disaster Management Committees be activated with immediate effect after several states in the country were affected by haze recently. The Melaka Chief Minister's Department's corporate communications division also said that the committees were required to take proactive measures according to guidelines set by the National Haze Action Plan. 'The Melaka government takes note of the haze that has hit several areas in the state, which is believed to be cross-border haze carried by south-westerly winds. 'Continuous monitoring of the Air Pollution Index (API) is being conducted by the Melaka Diaster Operations Control Centre with the help of the Melaka Environment Department (DOE) and the National Disaster Control Centre under the National Disaster Management Agency (NADMA),' the department said in a statement today. The highest API readings recorded in Melaka as of 2 am were Alor Gajah (Particulate Matter (PM) 2.5 with a reading of 157), Bukit Rambai (PM2.5 with a reading of 94) and Bandaraya Melaka (PM2.5 with a reading of 86), indicating that Alor Gajah API was at unhealthy level, while Bukit Rambai and Bandaraya Melaka were at medium levels. The state government also advised the public to take precautionary measures in ensuring their general health. 'High risk groups like children, the elderly and individuals suffering from respiratory problems are advised to reduce outdoor activities for the time being. The public is also advised not to carry out any open burning,' it said in a statement today. In PEKAN, the Pahang government said it is prepared to implement school closures in the state if the API readings exceed the very unhealthy threshold. State Local Government, Housing, Environment and Green Technology Committee chairman Datuk Mohammad Fakhruddin Mohd Ariff said this in response to reports of haze affecting two areas —Temerloh and Balok Baru in Kuantan — which recorded unhealthy API readings today.

About 20,000 In Singapore Affected By Subsidy Error Due To System Glitch
By Nur Ashikin Abdul Aziz SINGAPORE, July 21 (Bernama) -- About 20,000 individuals in Singapore were affected by a processing error in the Health Ministry's means-testing system, resulting in incorrect subsidy or grant amounts, the Ministry of Health (MOH) said on Monday. In a statement, MOH said that in the majority of cases, individuals received higher-than-intended subsidies or grants while a minority received lower-than-intended amounts. bootstrap slideshow The ministry said that in January, the Household Means Eligibility System (HOMES) was unable to appropriately account for the business income of selected individuals following changes in data processing timelines. This led to inaccurate means-testing for individuals with business income and their household members between Jan 1 and 27. 'These affected individuals represent less than three per cent of all individuals means-tested during this period. Corrections to subsidy and grant levels are in progress,' the ministry said. About 19,000 individuals were affected under MOH schemes, while around 1,000 were impacted for schemes under the Early Childhood Development Agency, Social and Family Development Ministry, Education Ministry, and Infocomm Media Development Authority. MOH said those who received an over-subsidy will not be required to return the overpaid amounts, while reimbursement payments to those who received lower-than-intended subsidies or grants will be completed by November 2025. 'Agencies will reach out to inform affected individuals progressively,' MOH said.

Penang JPV tests pig samples for African swine fever detection
GEORGE TOWN: The Penang Veterinary Services Department (JPVPP) is intensifying efforts to detect African swine fever (ASF) by conducting investigations and further sampling at pig farms across the state. State Local Government, Town and Country Planning Committee chairman H'ng Mooi Lye confirmed that three farms in Kampung Selamat, Tasek Gelugor, remain ASF-positive, while others are still under investigation. 'A total of 13 pig samples from slaughterhouses in North Seberang Perai (SPU), four from South Seberang Perai (SPS), and one from Southwest tested positive for ASF. However, farm-level confirmation is pending for most cases,' H'ng told Bernama. So far, 822 pigs have been culled from two of the three confirmed ASF-positive farms. JPVPP continues to monitor the situation and collaborate with agencies to prevent further spread. Chief Minister Chow Kon Yeow stated that the state is identifying alternative disposal sites for infected carcasses as a precaution. 'The SPU District Office and JPVPP are working together to ensure safe disposal in compliance with environmental guidelines,' he said. ASF is not zoonotic and poses no risk to human health or food safety. However, high mortality rates at two infected farms have raised concerns about wider transmission. – Bernama
