Cong questions timing, intent of EC voter list revision in Bihar

Jodhpur: Alleging that there is an attempt underway to influence the impending elections in Bihar, Congress Rajya Sabha MP Abhishek Singhvi Saturday targeted the Election Commission's ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) of voter lists and claimed people whose names were removed would not have enough time to appeal.
Questioning the timing of the electoral roll revision, Singhvi said EC could have undertaken the cleanup of voter lists in Dec, as has been done in earlier years. In the past, the EC carried out this process two years before the elections, so if someone's name was removed, they had the chance to appeal, Singhvi said. "But in Bihar, the way crores of people's names were removed from the voter list is what we are questioning," he added.
Raising questions over EC's intent, Singhvi also said the commission's demand for a signed affidavit from the Leader of Opposition in Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, for the anomalies he exposed in voter lists in Karnataka, was an "absurd joke and a mockery of the system." "When Rahul Gandhi raised this issue with the Election Commission, they instead asked him for an affidavit. This is like a situation where a person tells the police that a thief is running away, and the police, instead of acting, asks the complainant to provide an affidavit," Singhvi said, taking a dig at the commission's demand.
He said Congress would raise this issue across the country and highlight how the EC, under BJP's leadership, is violating norms. He said the EC's decision to disregard Aadhar as a valid document for voter verification was surprising since this document was not only issued by the govt but also being accepted as valid for govt verification purposes, except by the EC.

Tejashwi Alleges NDA MP Veena Devi Holds Two Voter IDs, Slams EC For Inaction

Tejashwi alleged that Veena Devi submitted two separate enumeration forms, bearing two different signatures during SIR process, both allegedly verified and signed off by EC. Amid the ongoing Special Intensive Revision (SIR) row, Former Deputy Chief Minister Tejashwi Yadav has responded to the Election Commission's claim that no political party had made any complaints and alleged that 'our BLAs and officials complain to the Election Commission every day, but they neither accept the complaints nor provide any acknowledgement." He further alleged serious irregularities in the voter list, and claimed that Veena Devi, an NDA Member of Parliament from Vaishali, of holding two separate EPIC (Electors Photo Identity Cards)—ID numbers UTO1134543 and GSB1037894—registered in two different Lok Sabha constituencies across two separate districts. He further claimed that the MP has votes in two different Assembly constituencies and that her EPIC cards show two different ages. Yadav further alleged that Veena Devi submitted two separate enumeration forms, bearing two different signatures during SIR process, both allegedly verified and signed off by the Election Commission. 'How did she end up with two different votes, two EPIC cards, two Lok Sabha constituencies, two Assembly constituencies, and two different ages in the new draft list published by the Election Commission?" Yadav questioned in his post. Labelling it a clear case of fraud, manipulation, and collusion, Yadav accused the Election Commission of favouring the BJP-NDA. He sarcastically referred to the Commission as the 'Troll Commission" and demanded accountability, asking whether the EC would now send 'two different notices from two different places" to the MP. Tejashwi Yadav also responded to EC's claim that no official complaint has been filed in the matter and said,"Our BLAs and officials complain to the Election Commission every day, but they neither accept the complaints nor provide any acknowledgement. Yet, they issue press releases daily claiming that political parties have not made any complaints." 'In lying, the Election Commission has even surpassed Prime Minister Modi. This is truly a wonder of the Election Commission. We have never seen anything like this anywhere," he further added. Earlier, the EC on Friday told RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav that it was a crime to forge and use a bogus government document and set a deadline for him to submit his 'apparently fake" Electoral Photo Identity Card (EPIC) by August 16. The Official had earlier written to the former Deputy CM, urging him to 'hand over for investigation' the voter card which he claimed to possess despite it having been 'not issued officially'. In the latest letter, the ERO said that a perusal of the voters list for the past several years has led to the conclusion that the EC had never issued the voter card with the EPIC number quoted by Yadav. view comments Disclaimer: Comments reflect users' views, not News18's. Amid 'vote chori' row, BJP claims Sonia Gandhi listed as voter before becoming citizen

NEW DELHI: The BJP on Wednesday launched a counterattack on the Congress, questioning its alleged attempt at 'vote-chori' by reportedly seeking inclusion of Sonia Gandhi's name in the electoral roll years before she was granted Indian citizenship. In response to the Congress's criticism of the Special Intensive Revision (SIR) system and its allegations of electoral malpractice, BJP IT Cell chief Amit Malviya took to 'X' (formerly Twitter), saying, 'Sonia Gandhi's tryst with India's voters' list is riddled with glaring violations of electoral law.' He wrote, 'This perhaps explains Rahul Gandhi's fondness for regularising ineligible and illegal voters, and his opposition to the SIR. Her name first appeared on the rolls in 1980 — three years before she became an Indian citizen and while she still held Italian citizenship. At the time, the Gandhi family lived at 1, Safdarjung Road, the official residence of Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Until then, the voters registered at that address were Indira Gandhi, Rajiv Gandhi, Sanjay Gandhi, and Maneka Gandhi.' Tagging a copy of the requisition slip for adding Sonia Gandhi's name, Malviya claimed, 'In 1980, the electoral rolls of the New Delhi parliamentary constituency were revised with January 1, 1980, as the qualifying date. During this revision, Sonia Gandhi's name was added, appearing at serial number 388 in polling station 145'. He alleged in the post, 'This entry was a clear violation of the law, which requires a person to be an Indian citizen to be registered as a voter. Following an outcry in 1982, her name was deleted from the list — only to reappear in 1983. But even her reinstatement raised serious questions. In the fresh revision of the electoral rolls that year, Sonia Gandhi was listed at serial number 236 in polling. Thakur's vote theft charge Ex-Union Minister Anurag Thakur alleged voter registration irregularities in Rae Bareli, Wayanad, Diamond Harbour, and Kannauj. He accused Rahul Gandhi, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, and Akhilesh Yadav of winning through 'vote theft.'
