I oppose nepotism, but Nurul Izzah deserves to be PKR No 2, says Hassan
Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim said Nurul Izzah Anwar has proven her mettle, having been part of PKR's struggle since the age of 18.
PETALING JAYA : Pasir Gudang MP Hassan Karim has again stated support for Nurul Izzah Anwar for the PKR deputy presidency, saying her qualifications to helm the post had nothing to do with her father being the PKR president.
Hassan said he was against nepotism in political parties or the government, but Nurul Izzah had proven her mettle, having been part of PKR's struggle since the age of 18.
'Who are we to deny Nurul Izzah's right to contest for the post just because she's Anwar Ibrahim's daughter?' he said, according to Utusan Malaysia.
'I myself have been outspoken in opposing nepotism, whether in political parties or the government, but Nurul Izzah has (earned the right to contest for the PKR deputy presidency) in her own capacity.
'This is an important position and she deserves to helm the post,' said the two-term PKR MP.
Hassan welcomed contests for the post in the central leadership elections, saying it would allow delegates to decide who they wanted to serve as Anwar's second-in-command in PKR.
In 2023, Hassan had urged Anwar, the prime minister, to review Nurul Izzah's appointment as his senior economic and financial adviser amid claims of nepotism.
After several weeks, she left the post and was instead made co-head of a secretariat for the advisory committee to the finance ministry.
Numerous top and divisional leaders have stated their support for Nurul Izzah to contest the deputy president's post, which is currently being held by Rafizi Ramli.
This followed Rafizi's leave of absence after the PKR divisional polls, which saw the defeat of several bigwigs aligned with him.
Rafizi has confirmed that he will defend his PKR deputy presidency, while Nurul Izzah said she would make 'the best decision possible' following calls for her to challenge for the post.
Nominations for PKR's central leadership elections opened today and close at 11.59pm tomorrow.

Phoong's aide dares Warisan rep to raise steel project delay in state assembly
Sabah industrial development minister Phoong Jin Zhe previously said the delay in the RM31 billion steel project was due to setbacks in obtaining the necessary approvals and securing a supply of natural gas. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : An aide to Sabah industrial development minister Phoong Jin Zhe has challenged Elopura assemblyman Calvin Chong to raise his concerns on the delayed RM31 billion Esteel Enterprise steel project in the state assembly. Chan Loong Wei said the upcoming state assembly is the right platform for the Warisan rep to voice out any issues he has with the project as an elected representative. 'If he is genuinely curious or wishes to seek accountability, I challenge him to raise this matter in the upcoming state assembly sitting,' he said in a statement. Chan, who is Phoong's political secretary, said Esteel Enterprise is a company that is owned by a credible Singaporean businessman, who also owned a Top 100 Private Company in China in 2023. 'They (Esteel) have real credentials and real capital. In fact, their acquisition of Southern Steel Bhd in Penang in October 2024 was widely reported in Sin Chew Daily and other business media,' he added. He said that Phoong remains committed to driving inclusive economic growth, creating decent-paying jobs for Sabah youths and turning the state into a competitive, investor-friendly region. Earlier today, Chong slammed Phoong's explanation of the delays in the Esteel Enterprise steel project, calling it 'misleading and irresponsible'. He also asked how such a major project could be announced in November 2022 without confirmed approvals, especially given the federal moratorium on manufacturing licences for the steel industry at the time. Chong called for the state government to disclose all agreements and terms involving Esteel Enterprise, saying the public deserved full transparency on a project of such scale. He also questioned the delay in implementation, noting that the manufacturing licence was only approved in January 2025, more than two years after the project was announced. On Monday, Phoong said the delay in the RM31 billion steel project was due to setbacks in obtaining the necessary approvals and securing a supply of natural gas. He said the initial projection for Esteel Enterprise's factory to begin operations in the fourth quarter of this year was based on the assumption that approvals would be obtained without delay. However, he said Putrajaya's two-year moratorium on manufacturing licences for steel-related industries created complications, with special approval only granted on Jan 24, 2025.

Puspal didn't reject K-pop concert, says ministry
South Korean girl group (G)I-DLE and GOT7's BamBam were slated to perform in Kuala Lumpur on June 14. (Facebook pic) PETALING JAYA : The communications ministry has denied claims that a K-pop concert scheduled for June 14 was cancelled due to a lack of approval from the authorities. The ministry said its central committee for applications for filming and performances by foreign artistes (Puspal) had granted pre-approval for 'K-Pop Big 2 Super Concert: (G)I-DLE & BamBam Live in Malaysia' on April 28. 'The decision to cancel the concert was made by the organisers, taking into account various justifications and the interests of all parties involved,' it said in a statement today. 'Organisers are required to make thorough preparations, including securing early approvals from relevant stakeholders, before organising a concert involving high-profile international artistes, as stipulated in the Puspal guidelines.' The concert, scheduled to take place at Axiata Arena in Bukit Jalil, would have featured the popular South Korean girl group (G)I-DLE and GOT7 member BamBam. However, Live Universe Sdn Bhd had announced in a Facebook post on Monday that the concert was cancelled due to regulatory issues. The organisers maintained that all requirements had been fulfilled but that, despite their efforts, their concert permit application was not approved.
