Malaysia backs Tokyo Statement 2025 at Asia-Pacific telecoms meet

PETALING JAYA : Communications minister Fahmi Fadzil has reaffirmed Malaysia's full support for the Tokyo Statement 2025, pledging the country's commitment to building resilient, inclusive, and sustainable digital infrastructure across the Asia-Pacific region.
Fahmi, who is leading the Malaysian delegation for the Asia-Pacific Telecommunity (APT) Ministerial Meeting, said the gathering is a vital platform for formulating joint policies and strategies towards an inclusive, sustainable, and secure digital development in the Asia-Pacific region.
'At the same time, it acts as a stage for multilateral cooperation in the region, which is the fastest-growing in terms of technology, while also supporting developing countries in technical, capacity-building, and ICT regulatory aspects,' he said in a Facebook post today.
He stressed that Malaysia remains committed to ensuring universal access, technological equity, and environmental sustainability in the digital space.
During a ministerial session themed 'Sustainable Digital Infrastructure and Accessibility', Fahmi outlined the government's efforts to expand digital reach nationwide through initiatives like Jendela, which has connected over 9.03 million premises to high-speed internet and extended 5G coverage to over 82% of populated areas.
He also pointed out that as of the end of 2024, Malaysia recorded an average mobile broadband speed of 105.36 Mbps and internet coverage of 98.66%.
'With a mobile penetration rate of 61% and 5G rollout, Malaysia is opening up more opportunities in education and across various industries,' he said.
Fahmi added that Malaysia is ready to collaborate with other APT member states to share innovations and work towards a more inclusive and sustainable digital future.
The APT is an intergovernmental organisation established in 1979 under the joint initiative of the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific and the International Telecommunication Union.
Themed Harnessing Emerging Technologies for Sustainable, Inclusive and Equitable Digital Transformation in the Asia-Pacific, this year's meeting is attended by 31 member countries and 19 associate members, comprising government entities, regulators and private sector agencies.

Meanwhile, Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof said the story of the sacrifice of Prophet Ibrahim (AS) is not just history, but rather a guideline for life that teaches that every sincere struggle will surely receive great rewards from Allah SWT. He said Aidiladha should be an occasion to express solidarity and love among fellow human beings, especially for those in need, including the poor, apart from reflecting the spirit of togetherness and mercy demanded by Islam. 'May all our worship, hajj, sacrifice and other practices be accepted and blessed by Allah SWT. Indeed, no sacrifice is small in His sight if done with sincere intentions. Ispace aborts Moon mission

Tokyo-based ispace had hoped to make history as only the third private firm – and the first outside the United States – to achieve a controlled arrival on the lunar surface. But 'based on the currently available data ... it is currently assumed that the lander likely performed a hard landing', the startup said yesterday. 'It is unlikely that communication with the lander will be restored' so 'it has been decided to conclude the mission', ispace said in a statement. The failure comes two years after a prior mission ended in a crash. The company's unmanned Resilience spacecraft began its daunting final descent and 'successfully fired its main engine as planned to begin deceleration', ispace said. Mission control confirmed that the lander's positioning was 'nearly vertical' – but contact was then lost, with the mood on a livestream from mission control turning sombre. Technical problems meant 'the lander was unable to decelerate sufficiently to reach the required speed for the planned lunar landing', ispace said. To date, only five nations have achieved soft lunar landings: the Soviet Union, the United States, China, India and most recently Japan. Now, private companies are joining the race, promising cheaper and more frequent access to space. On board the Resilience lander were several high-profile payloads. They included Tenacious, a Luxembourg-built micro rover; a water electrolyser to split molecules into hydrogen and oxygen; a food production experiment; and a deep-space radiation probe. The rover also carried 'Moonhouse' – a small model home designed by Swedish artist Mikael Genberg. 'I take the fact that the second attempt failed to land seriously,' chief executive officer Takeshi Hakamada told reporters. 'But the most important thing is to use this result' for future missions, he said, describing a 'strong will to move on, although we have to carefully analyse what happened'. Last year, Houston-based Intuitive Machines became the first private enterprise to reach the Moon. Though its uncrewed lander touched down at an awkward angle, it still managed to complete tests and transmit photos. Then in March this year, Firefly Aerospace's Blue Ghost – launched on the same SpaceX rocket as ispace's Resilience – aced its lunar landing attempt. The mood ahead of yesterday's attempt had been celebratory, with a watch party also held by ispace's US branch in Washington. After contact was lost, announcers on an ispace livestream signed off with the message: 'Never quit the lunar quest.' The mission had also aimed to collect two lunar soil samples and sell them to Nasa for US$5,000 (RM21,150). Though the samples would remain on the Moon, the symbolic transaction is meant to strengthen the US stance that commercial activity – though not sovereign claims – should be allowed on celestial bodies. — AFP

MCCC Sabah President Datuk Dexter Lau said both parties recently met and agreed to translate their previous strategic engagement into concrete, collaborative frameworks. Advertisement 'We will specifically focus on bilateral halal trade, education, leadership in publications and the joint organisation of high-profile and documentation initiatives,' he said, in a statement, Friday. Lau said the chamber had appointed four committee members – First Vice President Jacky Chin, Treasurer Shawn Tan, committee member Lanice Ng and Dr Gloria Chang – as the working committee for the WHC Sabah Chapter. He expressed confidence that their appointments, along with MCCC Sabah's involvement, would greatly benefit chamber members by offering exposure and expanding visibility on the international stage through WHC's global events, publications and digital platforms. The strategic collaboration will also serve as a bridge for bilateral halal trade and investment opportunities, particularly for halalpreneurs and women entrepreneurs from China and Malaysia, especially in Sabah. Lau is confident in Sabah's strong potential to become the international halal hub for Southeast Asia, given its strategic location and access to fast-growing markets with large Muslim populations in the region. 'With continued support and encouragement from the Government in promoting international trade and investment, we believe it won't be long before our objectives materialise, and Sabah's halal trade and investment can be elevated to a new level,' he added. According to the Global Islamic Economy Index, the global halal economy is projected to reach a market value of USD7.7 trillion by 2025 – up from USD3.2 trillion in 2015 – driven by increasing demand for Shariah-compliant investments and products. Malaysia remains a global leader in the halal industry, which contributes nearly 10 per cent to the nation's GDP. The sector is expected to grow further, with halal exports valued at billions of ringgit, as the country continues to lead in halal innovation, exploring areas such as AI-driven supply chain platforms and plant-based pharmaceuticals. The largest component of Malaysia's halal economy is the food services sector, which generated approximately USD31 billion (RM128.8 billion) in revenue in 2021.
