Scientists create mind-blowing phenomenon inside first-of-its-kind energy device: 'We were all very excited'

Nuclear fusion has high potential as an abundant and clean energy source, but the industry still faces challenges in fully stabilizing the process and making it profitable.
Tokamaks — an apparatus or fusion reactor used to produce and contain the nuclear fusion process — provide a promising setup. However, they still experience edge instabilities (also known as edge localized modes or ELM) akin to solar flares that lead to significant energy losses and damage on the reactor wall.
Scientists at the University of Seville, Spain, have been studying how ELMs interact with energetic particles to help minimize ELM damage. For the first time, their Small Aspect Ratio Tokamak (SMART) fusion reactor, created with researchers at the Princeton Plasma Physics Laboratory, successfully created plasma (the soup-like medium required for fusion in the tokamak). The reactor used an innovative method called "negative triangularity," which has been shown to minimize ELM damage on the tokamak, as reported by Interesting Engineering.
Most tokamaks are configured with "positive triangularity," where the cross-section of the plasma medium is shaped like the letter D — the straight side of the "D" facing the center, and the curved edge on the outside, the Interesting Engineering report explained. The steep pressure on the outside plasma edges is what has been contributing to ELM instability and potential reactor wall damage.
With negative triangularity, the "D" shape is inverted to face the center, minimizing plasma edge instability while maintaining the high performance of the nuclear fusion process.
So far, only the SMART reactor has achieved plasma production with negative triangularity, which is a massive breakthrough for the nuclear fusion industry.
"We were all very excited to see the first magnetically confined plasma and are looking forward to exploiting the capabilities of the SMART device together with the international scientific community," said Eleonora Viezzer, physicist and professor at the University of Seville, per Interesting Engineering.
The world is one step closer to a cleaner and highly abundant energy source. Compared to its counterpart, nuclear fission, nuclear fusion does not produce dangerous radioactive waste that requires special management. According to the International Atomic Energy Agency, fusion produces helium as a byproduct, which is not harmful to the environment.
In addition, nuclear fusion sources its fuel, deuterium and tritium, from hydrogen — one of the most plentiful elements on Earth, per the Department of Energy.

The primary goal, however, was driving down the energy costs of water heating. Published in the journal Energy Sources, the study reported an approximately 25-year lifespan for the design and an energy cost of about $0.0233 per kilowatt-hour, making the FSG a successful jumping-off point. "The FSG system offers a sustainable, environmentally friendly, and cost-effective solution for water heating by storing thermal energy in fine sand, overcoming the intermittency of solar radiation," researcher Dinesh Kumar Saini explained. Conventional water heaters run on fuel, typically natural gas, the combustion of which releases carbon pollution that contributes to the overheating of the planet. Even electric water heaters aren't necessarily the most eco-friendly, though they can be, depending on whether the electricity is generated by fuel-based power plants or a cleaner power alternative. Fortunately, finding other ways to heat water may be just what is needed to put a dent in the carbon pollution problem. The researchers managed to build a battery using a paper material that dissolves in water and probiotic bacteria. That's right: The same organisms that boost your gut health after drinking a smoothie were engineered to produce electricity using a special electrode. The result was a power source that can basically self-destruct after a set amount of time without harming its surroundings, Interesting Engineering explained. A big problem with batteries is that many contain toxic chemicals. After they are used, this pollution often enters soil and water through landfills and can end up posing dangers to human health. Yet with the researchers' solution, clean power can flow where it needs to flow, and afterward, no one gets hurt. Their model can currently run between four and 100 minutes before it cleanly and safely destroys itself. All that remains are helpful microbes, Interesting Engineering reported. This kind of battery is part of a field called transient electronics, which is all about fuel cells that are not made to last. Instead, they are designed to disintegrate, much like a device from a "Mission: Impossible" movie, Interesting Engineering noted. That might sound impractical, but there are actually all kinds of useful homes for these batteries that save time and money. Boomerangs are some of humanity's oldest tools. In the northernmost region of Australia, 50,000-year-old cave art appears to depict Indigenous hunters throwing the weapons at prey, including kangaroos. While most associated with Australia, boomerangs are also documented around the world. One famous example was discovered in an ancient cave in southern Poland in 1985. Instead of using wood, these Early Upper Paleolithic ancestors crafted their tool from a mammoth tusk. And according to recent radiocarbon reevaluations and Bayseian probability modeling, researchers now believe the ivory weapon is even older than previously estimated. Their findings are detailed in a study published in the journal PLOS One. The conclusion comes after an international research team reviewed artifacts recovered from Obłazowa Cave, one of Poland's most important Paleolithic sites. Originally identified in 1985, Obłazowa Cave contains evidence of both Neanderthal and human activity spanning at least ten eras. Some of the most important finds relate to Homo sapiens who occupied the cave roughly 30,000 years ago. These included animal bone pendants, a potential whistle made from a snail shell, and human remains. Archaeologists at the time also unearthed a mammoth tusk boomerang estimated to date back to the same era. For nearly three decades, that specimen offered the tool's oldest known example in Europe. But after careful reexamination using more accurate radiocarbon dating methods, the boomerang's origin is likely closer to 40,000 years ago. As Interesting Engineering explains, the revised age can help researchers better contextualize an important time during the Upper Paleolithic known as the Early Aurignacian, when humans began migrating across Europe in large numbers. Even that long ago, archaeological evidence clearly shows Homo sapiens already engaging in creative, complex, and symbolic projects. These included the manufacturing of refined tools, decorative adornments and jewelry, as well as participating in elaborate ritualistic burials. At about 2.36 feet wide, the ivory boomerang wasn't designed to arc through the air and return to its user. Instead, hunters almost certainly intended the hefty weapon to accurately smack into their prey and kill it—or at least stun a creature long enough for them to close in on the target. 'From an economic perspective, creating and transporting a sizable object like the boomerang represents a unique commitment,' they wrote. 'The intentional thinning of the mammoth tusk to achieve symmetry reflects a notable investment in a context where mobility was essential. Since no ivory fragments were found at the site, the boomerang must have been crafted elsewhere and carried to Obłazowa Cave, underscoring its special status.' According to archaeologists, their latest research not only furthers their understanding of early human adaptive strategies, but highlights 'the nuanced interplay of technology, symbolism, and environmental interaction during the earliest phases of human dispersals in Central Europe.'While experts have previously confirmed the use of boomerangs at various locations including Australia, Central Europe, North Africa, and ancient Egypt, the tools were by no means ubiquitous across all cultures. This means that evidence of the weapons—let alone those carved from mammoth tusks—can serve as vital sources of information on human societal evolution.
