Lions offer 'conservative' timeline on LB Malcolm Rodriguez's return from torn ACL "Rodrigo" tore his ACL on Thanksgiving, and he might not return to action before that same game in 2025
It's apparently going to be some time before linebacker Malcolm Rodriguez returns to action. Lions head coach Dan Campbell offered a "conservative" timeline for Rodriguez's return to action from a torn ACL suffered late last season.
Rodriguez, a key reserve LB and special teams fixture, tore the ACL in his knee on November 28th in the Thanksgiving win over the Chicago Bears. He has been away from the team during the recent OTAs rehabbing from the surgery.
Ahead of Thursday's final OTA session, Campbell was asked about "Rodrigo" and his potential timeline to return.
'Yeah. He's not going to be starting the season out (in action)," Campbell stated. "If I - conservatively, November. Or maybe that's - yeah, that's probably the best way to say it. Probably November. Somewhere in there.'
That more conservative timeline meshes with what our Dr. Jimmy Liao laid out earlier this offseason.

Ben Johnson's latest comments show the value Cole Kmet, DJ Moore bring to Bears

Chicago Bears training camp is already two weeks old, and a number of storylines are swirling as the team prepares for the upcoming season. Position battles are happening on the offensive line, rookies are getting acclimated to the NFL, injuries are being monitored, and everyone is tracking Caleb Williams' progress while working under head coach Ben Johnson. There are so many different things happening as each practice comes and goes, but one storyline that has popped up from time to time involves Cole Kmet and DJ Moore, two veterans who some believe are being phased out of the offense. Kmet, the longest-tenured player on offense, has been the starting tight end for the last five years but now has new competition with rookie Colston Loveland, the Bears' 2025 first-round pick. Moore, meanwhile, was a lightning rod for criticism last season after signing a contract extension due to poor body language and also is competing for touches with other receivers, including rookie second-round pick Luther Burden. There are fans and analysts who believe both of these veterans are being phased out of the offense sooner rather than later and could even be dealt this year. Johnson's latest comments seem to dispute that, however. After Sunday's Family Fest, Johnson met with the media and was asked about the offensive skill players he most trusts at this juncture of camp to do their job. He didn't hesitate to drop names. "I think Cole Kmet, I think DJ Moore, and I think Rome Odunze; those are the three that stand out to me first and foremost," the head coach said. Johnson also included receiver Olamide Zaccheaus in that group and admitted that the rookies are still getting their feet under them, but he was decisive when naming Kmet and Moore. The new Bears coach wants players he knows will be in the right spots and when. That pre-snap operation is critical to get correct, and it seems Kmet and Moore are two of the best at understanding the playbook up to this point. Why would a head coach want to move off players like that? It's tough to predict the long-term futures of both Kmet and Moore, both of whom are coming off slightly down years after setting career highs in 2023. Kmet won't have any guaranteed money left on his deal after the 2025 season, while Moore will be another year older and competing for touches with what should be a stacked receiver room. However, it's absurd to believe that either player will be benched this season. A new head coach installing a brand new system needs playmakers he can depend on who know what to do when they're on the field. That's half the battle of executing the proper play. Both players will have significant roles to play this season and won't be anywhere near the trading block. That storyline can be put to bed as training camp rolls along.

Pair of Packers rookies highlighted in ESPN's training camp tour report

Rookies Matthew Golden and Barryn Sorrell were both highlighted during ESPN's training camp stop in Green Bay last week. Jeremy Fowler of ESPN stopped by Packers practice last Friday, gathering information and notes on Matt LaFleur's team as part of a two-week trip around the league. Two of his biggest takeaways from Green Bay? Golden looks the part, and Sorrell flashed playmaking ability. Golden was complimented on his hands — the first-round pick has no drops so far at camp — and his 'determination to be great,' per Fowler. Consistently through nine practices, Golden has run with the starters and made plays during 11-on-11 periods. He is lining up to be a top target for Jordan Love and possibly a highly productive rookie pass-catcher. On Sorrell, Fowler said he was able to win matchups in one-on-ones and stop the run during team periods. From Fowler: '…he looks quite at home playing NFL football in pads.' The fourth-round pick figures to be a key rotational player at edge rusher as a rookie. Experienced at setting an edge over three seasons as a starter for Texas, Sorrell is physically ready to play right away at this level. Other notes from Fowler include Edgerrin Cooper describing himself as a 'heat-seeking missile,' and Christian Watson looking impressive in his recovery from ACL surgery. He also said Josh Jacobs 'looked like the best player on the field' during Friday's practice. The Packers are back on the practice field on Tuesday at 10:30 a.m.
