School children join litter-picking campaign
Pupils at a Kent primary school have played their part in a litter-picking campaign to help clean up local villages.
There are twelve pop-up events planned in East Kent villages, including in Sandwich, Eastry and Tower Hamlets in Dover.
On one pick, seventeen bags of rubbish were gathered in two hours by teachers and the 100 children from Eythorne and Elvington Primary School in their village.
Items included a bicycle tyre, paint brush and roofing felt, as well as pizza boxes and other fast food debris.
The scheme is part of the Great British Spring Clean, which is organised by Keep Britain Tidy and now in its tenth year. Dover District Council has led the campaign locally.
Rebecca Dyer, community development manager at the council, said the authority spent £1.5m each year on street cleaning.
"So we are trying to educate and engage people from a young age," she told BBC Radio Kent.
Kelly Taylor is the teaching assistant who encouraged the whole of Eythorne and Elvington Primary School to take part.
"I have been surprised how much rubbish there is when you start to look and pick," she said.
"There are lots of little pieces, but then whole chairs."
The campaign will end with a final pick at King George V Recreation Ground in St Margaret's at Cliffe on 6 April.
Since 2016, Keep Britain Tidy says the the Great British Spring Clean has become the nation's biggest mass-action environmental campaign.
Waste management company Veolia is also clearing roadsides over the next two weeks in Kent.
The company cleared 23 tonnes (23,000kg) of litter from the road between the Duke of York and Whitfield roundabouts on the A2 in 2024 as part of a council initiative.

Celebrations as two beaches in same town awarded Blue Flag status for the first time
Hastings has been awarded the Blue Flag and Seaside Award status for both Marina and Pelham beaches for the first time. The awards, presented by environmental charity Keep Britain Tidy, recognise the best beaches in England. This marks a significant achievement for the town in its efforts to improve and maintain the quality of its coastline. Julia Hilton, deputy leader and councillor responsible for tourism at Hastings Borough Council, said: "We are delighted that Pelham has joined Marina beach in receiving both the Blue Flag and Seaside Award for the first time. "Hastings Borough Council is proud of the quality of the beaches we have in our town. "We work hard alongside fantastic volunteers to keep our beaches clean and maintain the water quality, so it is great to see this work being recognised." The Blue Flag and Seaside Award status is not easily achieved, with strict criteria to be met. This includes excellent bathing water quality, with regular sampling and testing for microbiological and physical-chemical parameters. Councillor Hilton acknowledged the challenges faced with Southern Water, but praised the maintenance of the award status as a "great achievement." She added: "One of the key Blue Flag requirements is excellent bathing water quality. "This includes having sampling points in the areas on our bathing beaches most used, as well as near potential pollution sources on these beaches, such as streams, rivers, or stormwater outlets, to ensure these do not affect water quality. "Samples must be taken regularly at these bathing beaches and tested for both microbiological and physical-chemical parameters." Councillor Hilton also encouraged residents and visitors to help keep the seafront tidy by disposing of rubbish responsibly and reporting full bins on My Hastings. She said: "You can all do your bit to help keep our seafront tidy by putting your rubbish into bins or taking it home with you. "If the bins are full, please report these on My Hastings so our waste teams can empty them." She also reminded beachgoers to check the RNLI website for safety advice and to follow the guidance of on-duty lifeguards.

Cause of flats blaze unknown, fire service says
Firefighters are still at the scene of a major fire that led to the evacuation of 42 flats. The blaze broke out at Conqueror House in Crabble Hill, Dover, at about 01:10 BST on Sunday, according to Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS). The service said on Monday morning that the fire was now extinguished but two fire engines remained at the scene "to check for any remaining hotspots and to maintain a watching brief". An investigation will take place, but the cause of the fire has "not yet been determined", it continued. The fire service said it sent 12 fire engines and two height vehicles at the peak of the blaze. Two people were checked over by paramedics for smoke inhalation. Dover District Council set up an emergency centre at its offices in the early hours of Sunday where the Salvation Army and Red Cross provided food and water. The property's landlord, Town and Country Housing, said it was arranging week-long hotel stays for all those who needed immediate help. More than 40 flats evacuated during overnight fire
More than 40 flats have been evacuated due to a fire overnight in Dover, Kent Fire and Rescue Service (KFRS) said. The fire brigade said it needed 12 fire engines and two height vehicles at the peak of the blaze in Crabble Hill, which was still burning on Sunday. Upon arrival, crews began evacuating the 42 flats and Dover District Council was working to offer support and provide emergency accommodation to those affected, said the fire service. KFRS said its volunteer response team also attended to provide welfare support for the crew and assistance to displaced residents.
